In this video, I discuss the problems Samudragupta had to face after his accession, particularly the rebellion of his brother Kacha. It has been argued by some scholars that the accession of Samudragupta was not peaceful. There was a rebellion against Samudragupta and the person who led this rebellion was Kacha, one of Samudragupta's brothers. In this video, I analyse this theory in detail.

I can't wait for the episodes regarding the civil conflict after Kumaragupta's death between Skandagupta, his uncle Ghatotkachagupta and other claimaints to the throne. the vids for the Alchon Hun invasion and it being repelled by Yashodharma's coalition is going to be my favourite 😍 For people in the comments I recommend reading these two academic papers I just finished reading:- 1. Monuments of Hope, Gloom, and Glory in the Age of the Hunnic Wars. 50 years that changed India by Hans Bakker 2. Later Gupta History: Inscriptions, Coins and Historical Ideology by Michael Willis

What's your opinion on claims of 'rajputs being descendents of white huns' by James tod?
@anirudh177
@anirudh177 2 жыл бұрын
@@gujjewman96 I disagree with the claim, and as far as I know it is also not considered the most plausible theory by the current academia. My view is that the Rajputs emerged as a social group between the 9th and 12th century CE, through a process of various communities, Jatis, landholders, pastoralists and more changing their position on the societal hierarchy of Northwest India during an era of political chaos and disintegration. During the era, the constant invasion and conflict brought by outsiders, and the disintegration of the Pratiharas, led to an era of chaos in the northwest, destabilizing and shaking the previously solid positions of the communities and Jatis in their specific classes of the social hierarchy of the region, and in this period of political disintegration and chaos, various communities took the opportunity to increase their power and fill the vacancies left due to the instability, those that became economically and militarily powerful enough to change their position on the hierarchy, forged dubious ancestries and declared claimed ancestries to legendary figures and dynasties and with the help of Brahmins legitimised their new position in the hierarchy and changed their varna to Kshatriyas and assimilated into it.

The oldest mention of a catapult comes from the story of ajatshatru (magadha king, around the life of buddha). He is also credited with bringing the scythed chariot into indian warfare. other than that I've only heard that the cholas after becoming prominent imported seige such as flamethrowers from the Han Chinese empire

In all honesty, it's a good thing seige wasn't put much investment into. Unlike strategy video games where seige is overpowered, historically only the cannon is seen as a "practical" seige weapon, the others were extremely situational for they cost of maintaining them(not to say completely useless). Unfortunately the cannon/gunpowder is what we didn't invest into, instead we kept using outdated war elephants and continued getting wrecked by turkic powers lol.

Is it right that Samudragupta got titles like ASHWAMEDHKARTA,PARAMBHAGWAT,KAVIRAJ.and is it true that guptas were feudatories of kushanas but later declared their territory independent and established gupta empire?

I am not aware of the title - Ashwamedhkarta. Although he performed the Ashwamedha sacrifice but not sure if there's a title like that. About Kaviraja, yes this was his title and it appears in Allahabad Prashasti. About the title of Parambhagvata, the inscription in which the title appears, some scholars argue that it is spurious inscription.

What were the reasons for the decline of the guptas?? Is it white huns Or something else
@anirudh177
@anirudh177 2 жыл бұрын
Multiple reasons:- 1. Although Skandagupta had won against the Huns, his campaigns had been costly and he himself had fought a massive civil war with his uncle Ghatotkachagupta before becoming emperor, the empire was in decline and he was holding it through his sheer brilliance. 2. Indo-Roman trade was declining as Romans were slowly weakening, and the Guptas relied a lot on trade for their economy, this hit hard. 3. Incompetent and weak successors further weakened the Guptas and many feudatories declared independence and rebelled 4. We know that civil conflicts and civil wars had happened after Skandagupta's reign and there was lot of political chaos within the royals 5. the Invasion of the Alchon Huns between 490s CE - 530s CE Basically a combination of bad economic situation, constant war with invaders, and incompetent successors.
@randomturd1415
@randomturd1415 2 жыл бұрын
Gupta's and the empires they traded with(persia/Rome) all were thrashed by Huns. That century is noted with a decline in global economy. Other reasons might've been important too, but the hunnic horse archers have the biggest contribution to turning patna from an important city to continued decline till Sher Shah Suri revives the city.

Why did Buddhism and Jainism decline in India?? If these 2 religions were so influential in India why did Hinduism became dominant in the indian subcontinent is it because of the bhakti movement which started in South India for the decline of these religions?? Or is it the Islamic invasions for the decline of these religions??
@anirudh177

There are 4 major reasons for the decline of Buddhism in India:- 1. Hunnic Invasions 2. Decline in patronage of Buddhism and increasing promotion of Hinduism by kingdoms and empires by 400s and onwards 3. The spread of Bhakti movement and its popularity 4. Islamic Invasions its a combination of these four that led to the decline of Buddhism.
