Elite has a pretty insane learning curve and a weird system for it's content. There is a lot to do, but the game will not tell you about it, or how to do it. There's always fun to be had though. I hope you continue, I'd love to see how you react to some of the cooler stuff you'll stumble upon

The Mass Effect galaxy map music absolutely never fails to make my heart beat shoot up for a hot second. This tune evokes all the fond memories I have of the Shepard trilogy. The entire series flashes before my inner eye and within a split second I've gone through my entire emotional range, being joyfully surprised at first and left with the bittersweet melancholy of knowing I'll never get to experience the trilogy for the first time again. Man, no game series has ever come close to scratching that particular itch. I miss ME.

That's the reason it got uninstalled...I have over 4000 hours in game and when they didn't implement VR in the update, forcing players to use a flat screen crap FPS experience instead of the VR one they lost my support. I tried the update/DLC and performance issues aside of which were game breaking as said they lost my support

Elite is a million little things that one has to learn, which just piles up to a massive mountain that results in forming the learning curve of the game. You have to take baby steps and pay attention to the details, such as using lasers vs shields like you have learned in the tutorial, or at the end here to wait for a scan to know if you actually should open fire on someone or not (unscanned targets always get you fined, even if they turn out to be wanted).

In ground battles, use laser weapons to take down shields, then switch to projectile weapons for the kill. It's annoying but you'll be able to actually kill something.

I find the most fun (and effective) way to do ground combat is with a friend. Laser weapon guy in front and bullet guy behind. Bullet guy keeping an eye on laser guy and finishing off the baddies whose shields he drops.

Man... I am so sorry you're having a rough go of it, but that's how it goes sometimes as you learn this game. I'm glad that you're having some fun along the way, and flying in VR is one of the most amazing things about Elite, so I'm glad you got to see that. If you're ok with a little backseat gaming advice, here are some tips to help you out: Just like the guy in the tutorial said; lasers for shields, bullets for bodies. The main reason you were getting dominated by NPCs on the ground is because you were using the wrong weapon. That AR will take down a target's health really quickly, but their shield will deflect tons of bullets before it goes down. Pick up a thermal laser weapon (even a pistol) from the Pioneer Supplies shop inside a station concourse, and use that first to knock the shield out before you switch to the AR. It's like how shields/health take different amounts of damage in Halo, but the resistances to specific damage types are more important in Elite. That's true of ships, too. Lasers will take out shields quickly but don't do much damage to a ship hull. Kinetic weapons like multi-cannons will take down hull more quickly but take a lot longer to chew through shields. Having one of each on your Sidewinder will let you deal both damage types. Lastly, if you wanna avoid getting rocked by the local police force like that, just make sure you target the ship you want to fire on before you open fire, and check the bottom left of your Hud. That'll tell you if the ship you're targeting is wanted or a mission target. Never fire at the System Defense Force unless for some reason you wanna get into a fight with the cops. I really like your Elite content! It's awesome to see you trying things out, and I hope that the stumbles along the way didn't put you off. Hoping for more in the future!

Elite Dangerous in VR is the only way I’ve ever played it. It’s… beautiful. Beyond beautiful. Especially with the recent JWST photos it puts the scale of the universe into perspective. Love it. My favourite tip is the seven second rule! When you want to get somewhere in supercruise, head towards it at full speed until the ETA is seven seconds. Then reduce the throttle to just above the blue markers on the throttle and you'll coast in without doing a 'loop of shame!' It looked like you enjoyed it but the game does have a cliff like learning curve. ;-)

As much as the tutorials have improved in elite, I feel like the way to have the most fun in this game as a new player is to have an experienced player play with you. If you ever wanted someone to Multi-crew with I'm sure that I or any other experienced player would love to. It would be a great way to learn things and earn a bunch of money to get nicer ships. Cuts down on the grind and is super fun to run air support while another person goes in on the buggy in harder missions.

I'm assuming the lack of VR in 'on foot mode' us due to the poor performance in Odyssey but if you go into the camera mode while on foot you get a VR view and as far as I can tell it works fine. So I think it's about time they enabled VR for on foot.

Unfortunately you assume incorrectly. The reality is that FDev is not the greatest of devs. VR is no longer supported by ED and the community believes that VR was the work of one dedicated employee that since left the company. Before you dismiss this scenario, think about the game HUD, the only color you can have is orange because of the way it was coded. If you try to change the color of the HUD elements you'll see that it changes the color of everything, including profile pictures. It is spaghetti code that can't be untangled

I would definitely recommend a few courier or delivery missions to start with. Get some cash flow, buy a few upgrades and a new ship(then Always fly with rebuy, which is the insurance cost to cover the ship if it gets, sorry, when it gets destroyed)

Yeaahh ... welcome hahahah I was one that was telling you to play in Virtual Reality ....I'm sooo glad you did. :) Now you are discovering why VR keeps growing on players gradually ehheheh ... GREAT VIDEO!! May I recommend you to buy a ship with enough space for a deluxe passanger cabin and accept a Tourism Mission? Many players missed this in VR and the Tourism Missions pick special locations around the galaxy that look incredible to admire, Also as a side Mission try to search for Pulsars and go to check one, you really need to see that in Virtual Reality ( To find Neutron stars in the galaxy map: You can change the filter to star type, then untick all the letters (f, o, g, k, b, a, m, t etc). Neutron stars and black holes should be coloured grey. ) And a final comment, ...to overcome the FPS Flat2d sad change (we all felt the same hehehe) you should play some VR FPS, so you will understand how good it could be if they add it. Let's pick a random VR FPS : Half-Life: Alyx yep you should totally try it until you reach some good action FPS parts :P

I have to say, THE BEST MOMENT I've ever had in gaming, was the moment when I hyperjumped into a star system in Elite Dangerous while playing in VR. A huge yellow star suddenly appears in front of me. The scale, the gorgeous sphere of extremely hot plasma just floats in infinite deep space in front of me, and there's nothing between me and that huge fire ball except for a thin layer of cockpit glass & some void space. Damn I can barely describe that feeling, but in VR the scale feels fucking real, and it's fucking stunning. I will never ever forget that moment. Literally no other games have ever provided something to that degree. Maybe Star Citizen with VR can do the same, we'll see about that.

At surface settlements, use the low Gs and your jetpack to your advantage to pull an Obi Wan. Get the high ground and strip shields with a laser or plasma weapon. Keep at it, Elite presents a beautiful and dangerous galaxy!

Really funny to watch you figuring everything out! 😄👍 Some hints and suggestions for a potential round 3: - you can order your ship to be brought from another system to your station for a small fee - space combat is a bit more intuitive and profitable than ground combat, at least in the beginning (but system is the same - laser for shields, guns for hull) - for some spectacular stuff, look in your codex for thargoid or guardian structures, it should show you some locations - neutron stars are also a pretty sight - find a system in war, belonging to the empire or the federation and enter some high intensity combat zones. With a bit of luck, there is nice stuff to see! 😉

Yeah, FDev (as is tradition) indicated pretty soon after Odyssey's Beta that it would never be available in VR. Considering that they cut support for that as well as Odyssey updates for Console, it makes me wonder what else they have in store for the game because God knows it hasn't been much up until this point. I can't even tell you when the last time we got a new spaceship was. FRONTIER is one of those companies who keeps shooting themselves in the foot over and over again. Love your stuff Jay, but playing a flight sim with non-inverted controls is some literal blasphemy. lol

It takes a good month to learn everything about this game. The HUD is important to learn how to read, ship temperature and fuel gauges are important. Heat sinks and fuel scoops are your friend.

Elite has a steep learning curve. I've been playing it since the beta and two of my coworkers just started playing and there's just a lot of stuff that the game really doesn't do a very good job of explaining. The main thing that I think Odyssey has done that I really dislike is both of my coworkers work sort of sucked into the fps portion of the game simply because they didn't really seem to realize that the rest of the game existed. You can't take space missions from NPCs so they ended up only taking the fps missions. One of them didn't even realize they had a ship. They ended up taking shuttles everywhere and getting frustrated with the half baked fps. Its a shame because the rest of the game is so much more compelling in my opinion and I imagine a lot of people will simply bounce off of the game because of how the new player experience is structured. My advice to both of them was to ignore the fps missions. Get into their ships and never look back. Both are having a blast now.

Part of the beauty of Elite Dangerous is customizing your flight controls. It can be daunting...but its crazy rewarding. That said, IF you really wanted to get your feet wet in the universe of Elite, I would suggest starting with passenger runs, but you've built yourself a bit of debt so you're gonna have to rely on mineral extraction zones to get your money up. Just fly into a mineral extraction zone (low is best for your level) and fly around until you find security details. Follow them around until they engage an outlaw then tag along. Don't fire until their target is nearer to death than not, then unload...you'll get credit and...well...Credits. Build some wealth and buy a Type 6 or Orca...run some taxi services for clean passengers for easy BORING credits...but it'll get you into the rest of the game.

VR in elite isn't really worth using for ground missions but it's absolutely incredible for ship flight and combat. I highly recommend finding a place with other ships flying around and just flying formation on a random ship. Maybe go fly formation with the police and shoot at whatever they do.

Been playing since the Beta in 2014 VR dose work in Odyssey you have to use the Camera suite select Commander Cam its in your control bindings I would also recommend getting a HOTAS I use the Thrustmaster T 1600 2 sticks and a throttle left stick for thrusters right for pitch roll and yaw I have the camera suite bound to the HOTAS so I can switch between VR and flat Screen On foot I'm in the right over the shoulder view for VR if I need the Hud or have to shoot switch back to the flat screen the views are vary addictive

I have a very love hate relationship with this game. With the managers of the devs it's just a hate relationship. I'm one of the playstation 4 playstation users that pretty much got left behind After spending ridiculous amounts of money through in game purchases and everything else. But it is very entertaining watching you play the game and wish I could just tell you everything you need to know because it's a lot. But that's also kind of part of it.. you're put out in this massive Sandbox and You just go. However you really have to use 3rd party tools to know what stuff is out there and there really is some amazing stuff out there.

When you shuttled from your ship, you could have easily gone to the ship purchasing store on-foot in the concourse and have your ship brought there. The lack of on foot VR is actually confusing to me. My eye tracker has more of a VR feel on foot than the VR flat screen system has. Why not just switch to that “head look” system for on foot and it would at least feel like VR even without it being fully implemented.

Cockpit VR is a strange experience, your totally immersed into the game yet completely helpless, you see the cockpit with the buttons but you cannot touch them… it’s a worst feeling in DCS where you want to flip switches but nope!

Next step : buy a new ship and outfit it. I remember the first time I didn't pay attention to power draw, so I just put the best weapons I could find. When I deployed the weapons it cut the power to everything else... Ah well, just gonna fight without breathing. Who needs oxygen anyway ?

i can recommend you getting a nice Joystick... there is one from thrustmaster specific desined for Space games... than is Elite in another Level with VR...

If you want maximum efficiency in supercruise, wait for the eta to get to 7 seconds and then immediately put the throttle in the middle of the blue and leave it there. The eta should remain at around 7 seconds all the way to your destination, give or take 1 second. As a side note, on-foot gameplay is a real stupid kinda grind at the moment. Notice how the first ship combat mission you took went amazingly? You're FPS skill is not at fault here, without thousands of hours grinding materials and upgrading your gear it's all but impossible to win a straight out gunfight. You can cheese it by fighting in an SRV, but I think you'll find far more satisfaction sticking to ship activities.

Bullcrap. I haven't grinded materials for any odyssey gear and I can do high intensity ground conflict zones with ease. I run them with a grade 1 dominator suit, grade 2 manticore executioner which I happened to find in a shop at a concourse which I use for taking down shields, same concourse thing happened with my grade 3 karma C-44 that I use after enemy shields are down. Grade 1 karma p-15 is a backup pistol which I barely even use. And I wouldn't even need the grade 2 manticore and grade 3 karma. I was doing perfectly fine with a grade 1 TK Aphelion for shields and the karma p-15 pistol for body. And I'm not some FPS nolife either. I suck at FPS games, but odyssey content is easy as long as you use the right weapons for the right purpose, just like in ship combat.

Wanted to play it again a week ago. I also tried to check out Odyssey just to find out Frontier stopped shipping content for console. Made me quite angry. Been playing it since early access. I will probably never play it again, even though I have a PC I could play on.

A lot of times the ROI just don't justify the costs. VR players are still a super tiny minority, and that breaks down even further when you separate VR players into demographics and then even further when you break that down per genre. Maybe if Todd Howard begs Microsoft enough for it, they might let him add it as a post-launch update. We'll see.

@@billywashere6965 yes we heard that it is the egg or the chicken...how do you think the market can grow without new games too? The truth is that VR keeps growing...and it is getting better and more amazing. Elite is a jewel to enjoy.... Imagine wandering in space watching everything on massive scales...we need the same in Starfield...and Bethesda did this already on Skyrim VR and it was a proven HIT :)
