There was once a band called "The Beat" otherwise known in America as "The English Beat" they still remain one of my favorite all-time bands. I would consider them a ska band. When they broke up their members went on to form both General Public and Fine Young Cannibals, both groups also produced some really great music. This concludes today's history of great '80s bands.

It's funny, this song reminded me of a song I used to love during the 90's, but I could not for the life of me remember the name of the band or the song, all I had was a vague notion that it was called "London" something, then I saw your comment and read "The Beat" and it suddenly hit me, "Londonbeat", with the song "I've been thinking about you". Man have not heard that song since the 90's, so thx for helping out, however unintentional it was :) Edit: lmao, and now I see just a few comments below yours was Iris E's comment that explicitly says: "Next: Londonbeat - I’ve been thinking about you."

"Johnny Come Home" is a great song - one of our big drinking songs in college. Also off their first album, their cover of Elvis Presley's "Suspicious Minds" was a hit. Also from this, their second and last album, "Good Thing" is another banger with a killer piano solo by Jools Holland. FYC was formed after the band 'The Beat' (The English Beat to those of us in the US) broke up and guitarist Andy Cox and bassist David Steele recruited Roland Gift to sing. Would love for you to do some English Beat sometime too. You'll love them - they were one of the bigger second wave ska bands, along with The Specials (the band that Terry Hall who wrote "Our Lips Are Sealed" for The Go Go's" is from). Thanks! Peace from SF

Fine Young Cannibals (FYC) were a British pop rock band formed in 1984 in Birmingham, England - by bassist David Steele, and guitarist Andy Cox (both formerly of The Beat), as well as singer Roland Gift (formerly of the Akrylykz). Their self-titled 1985 debut album contained "Johnny Come Home" and a cover of the Mark James 1968 song "Suspicious Minds" - which was later covered by Elvis Presley in 1969. Those two songs were top 40 hits in the UK, Canada, Australia and many European countries. Their 1989 album, “The Raw & the Cooked”, topped both the UK and US album charts, and contained their two US Billboard Hot 100 chart number one singles: "She Drives Me Crazy" and "Good Thing". In 1990, the band won two Brit Awards: Best British Group, and Best British Album (the latter of which was for their 1989 album “The Raw & the Cooked”). Their name came from the 1960 film All the Fine Young Cannibals - starring Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood.

Roland Gift, he's also an occasional actor. He portrayed immortal villain Xavier S. Cloud in the 90s television series Highlander, and as a matter of fact he had the most appearances on the show than any other villain guest star, possibly any other guest star period. This song was also used in an episode although Roland was not involved in that one, the episode with the song was about an old friend of Duncan MacLeod's played by Nigel Terry (Excalibur) who ran a fashion show

Co-produced by Prince associate David Z, the track was recorded in Studio B of Prince's Paisley Park complex outside of Minneapolis. The unique snare drum "pop" sound was created by recording the snare drum portion separately. A speaker was then placed on top of the snare drum, and a microphone below. The original recording of the snare drum part was played back through the speaker and re-recorded.[4]

Lead singer Roland Gift used to play tenor sax in his previous band Akrylykz before switching to vocals. Other band members were from another band The Beat aka The English Beat. Both bands were part of a popular ska/reggae/punk movement in 70's to 80's UK and often toured together.

Gotta say, the 80s was THE era for crazy, kooky, off the wall videos, lol. I'm a child of the 60s and have many happy memories of the music from the 60s and 70s ... but the 80s was when I was all 'grown up' and could really appreciate music. TFYC was a fantastic group in its day, and Roland Gift, WOOF, what a hottie.

Hadn't seen this video for a while, but as soon as I saw it, it called to mind another video because of the choreographing similarities. You should watch "True Faith" by New Order, because both of these videos have the same director and choreographer, Philippe Decouflé.

I can't stop the way I feel Things you do don't seem real Tell me what you've got in mind 'Cause we're running out of time Won't you ever set me free? This waiting 'round's killing me She drives me crazy Like no one else She drives me crazy And I can't help myself I can't get any rest People say I'm obsessed Everything you say is lies But to me there's no surprise What I had for you was true Things go wrong, they always do She drives me crazy Like no one else She drives me crazy And I can't help myself I won't make it on my own No one likes to be alone
