Song came out in 1986. I got pregnant in 1987 at 17 years old. This song was huge for me. Sadly My father did not take it as well. I moved out. Even sadder he died a years later and we never really got past it. Life is short people. Live and love.

This song was so controversial back when it came out. It was definitely about unplanned pregnancy. Her videos were so great - always told a story. This was from her third album, so mid 80s. Keep going with Madonna especially stuff from this time period.

Songs actually about her getting pregnant and her fears of telling her Father, and wondering what his reaction will be, hoping he will support her decision and not stop loving her. Her dad played by the great actor Danny Aiello who is not longer with us 😥

This isn’t about her pregnancy, she hardly contributed to writing this. The main writer Brian Elliot said he based it on a conversation he overheard between some girls talking outside the studio. Madonna didn’t have her first child for many years after this song was written & released.

@@NativeNYerChicHK For you (and others who misunderstood @LordDiamonds comment)... The boy in the video was never her boyfriend. The video footage of them falling in love is not from actual home videos. The father in the video is not her father. (It's the wonderful actor Danny Aiello.) The video footage of the father/daughter is *not* actual video of her actual childhood. I'd bet money that the house with the white picket fence was not a house she ever lived in. I'd also bet money that the pink panther doll was not Madonna's actual doll.

Every time I hear this song, I tear up. My mom had gotten pregnant with me, she was a teenager. I was born in February, this song came out in June of “86”. Yes, her friends did tell her to give me up, while my family supported my mom with me. My mom passed 11 years ago. I have my own family now, I know she would be proud of me. 35 and still gets emotional with this song.

This song was incredibly controversial because it was about possibly having an abortion and was banned from some radio stations when I was a teenager. Also it was the debut of Madonna's new fit look and her peroxided short hair and everybody was like WOWOWOW

@drag0nfly_girl From Newsweek: "Nominally about a teenager who has decided not to have an abortion, it is the kind of unapologetic statement that always causes outrage when evinced by a woman about her own body....Cultural conservatives who otherwise objected to Madonna's overtly sexual public persona praised what appeared to be her anti-abortion stance." Back in the old days (pre 1980s), when a girl was pregnant and unmarried they would say she's "in trouble". There was a lot of stigma about having children out of wedlock. It was considered shameful, especially to Dads. Many a young couple were pressured into marriage because he got her "in trouble".

No, it was def about teen pregnancy and the stigma attached. It was quite a shocking song and video for it’s time, intentionally. Madonna has always liked to push the boundaries and question why we treat people a certain way, or why certain attitudes exist. That’s been her most consistent theme in all of her music- pushing boundaries.

YES! So great to see you enjoying this classic Madonna track. It was a big hit for her in 1986, but was also quite controversial at the time. People felt like she was promoting teen pregnancy, when in fact the song is really advocating the narrator's choice to keep her baby. It's a very catchy & heartfelt song with a powerful political message and the video, like so many of her best, plays like a mini dramatic film. Little trivia - the actor in this video, Alex McArthur, has spoken about how this video had an unexpected major effect on his career. He went on to star in 3 very popular "Desperado" western movies. It seemed like he was all over tv during the late 80s and well into the 90s. But I can't remember the last time I've seen him as an actor. Unfortunately, the only time I'm seen him in the last 25 years was an interview he did after his son was murdered in Oroville, California in December 2019. News reports noted that his son was a well-known cannabis grower and the shooting was related to a large drug trafficking organization. How terrible for him.

Love that you keep complimenting on her singing. People like to criticize her singing, most likely due to her massive success and popularity. You didn’t experience how huge a pop star she. You are listening with fresh ears and objective mind

You should check out her docu- movie called “Truth or Dare.” She opens up more than she ever did- Cameras follow her/ them around ...and one concert, the cops show up and tell he she can’t go onstage, due to her “provocative” performances onstage- you should really check it out- 🌲✌️✨

That was in NYC. She was on the Staten Island Ferry heading to Manhattan. You can see the World Trade Center in the distance. Brings old memorie of my NY in the 80s.

I love your so into the song and her pipes. Critics during those times belittle her "weak singing voice". Just go to show good music will stand the test of time 🤓🎶

This is my favorite Madonna Song. Anytime a young girl gets pregnant out of wedlock and decides to keep the baby is a win. This song has a great message. Love your child even if they make poor decisions in life. Good can always come out of bad decisions.
