@@ChrisOliver4307 Right? Upon reflection, it seems like some of the giants in Pop took turns throughout the 80s. Michael Jackson's Thriller singles and multiples side projects' output slowed to a crawl in 1985-86 while Madonna's stuff marinated and matured (and her superstar status was cemented with the hit movie, Desperately Seeking Susan) during that same time. Then, when MJ came back with the Bad LP, Madonna slowed down for a minute, herself, with nothing new for all of 1988. Then, as MJ's Bad-era singles slowed to a trickle, she busted out with Like a Prayer in the Summer of 1989. Heck, even in 1991 and 1995, Michael Jackson wasn't competing with Madonna's new LPs. Apart from her first two albums coinciding with the rein of Thriller, they kinda stayed off of each other's toes after a while... possibly to avoid direct competition.

After this song became a huge hit, she was dubbed The Material Girl in the media, and then regretted recording it - because she meant the song ironically. She rarely will perform it in concert anymore but it's a bop.
@ronnieluv
@ronnieluv 3 жыл бұрын
It makes me so happy to see you bopping along to this song!! Madonna has said that the video is ironic, in the sense that the "material girl" character that you see on the set (serving full Marilyn Monroe movie star glamour) is a role that the real character is playing, who states in her dressing room at the beginning of the video that her current beau is "trying to impress me by giving me expensive gifts." So the idea is that the "material girl" is really not a material girl. You honestly can't go wrong with Madonna, from her earlier videos such as "Borderline" or "Lucky Star" to some of her biggest hits in the 80's, including "Papa Don't Preach", "Open Your Heart", "Express Yourself" or "Cherish". She made some of her most beautiful, provocative and mind-blowing videos in the 90's, such as "Erotica", "Rain", "Bad Girl", "Bedtime Story", "Human Nature" and "Frozen" (to name just a few). And some of her most recent work is definitely worth checking out as well ("Medellin", "Dark Ballet" and "God Control" come to mind). Thank you for putting a big smile on my face this evening! I always look forward to your reactions, but it's particularly exciting when you pick some of my favorite artists!

@@ilymal835 If you knew about her progression in the music industry, you'd know that she was extremely aggressive in her absolute desire to become 'rich and famous'. She's given numerous interviews regarding how she would have meetings with music industry titans, mostly men, and she would always resort to sexual favours to the individual that could further progress her music career. She made no bones about using/abusing her body in order to 'get' what she was looking for in fame and fortune. This song was about the true nature of women in general and about herself in particular.

Madonna is so genius and iconic that she acomplished the same myth level of Marylin Monroe and for me surpassed it, because she is known as the most successful and influential women of all time in artist industry and Marylin of course was also but more for the fragile side instead Madonna for her strong personality, curious what two different women accomplished each one with their own personality. By the way, Madonna was the only female artist to dare imitate/recreate Marylin visuals or influences (this performance, Material Girl video, her True Blue video and all the videos of True Blue era) without being vulgar and not only she did that with style, but she also surpassed that concept: one strong woman (Madonna) imitating and tooking inspiration of the most legendary woman of artistic industry until that time (Marylin Monroe which was fragile) and then synthesizing that by taking control of the fragile woman concept and creating and constructing herself a NEW WOMAN idea and concept she made something unique concepting a new kind of WOMAN for the masses more confident, strong and with a same level of credibility as a man, on that she surpassed Marylin Monroe, so here you have the uniqueness of Madonna, that's why she is such a Genius! Marylin died and probably when Madonna dies she will be more mythical than Marylin because we all know when an artist dies they stand even more popular and culturally influent, imagine with Madonna she already is a myth, a superstar and a Legend so imagine when she dies! She will be remembered as the Greatest between the greatests! Love

No female artist will ever have a career like Madonna or the impact. She created pop culture . Hope you react to many more Madonna songs gee he has soo many hits. According to billboard in 2018 she has ranked as the 2nd most successful artist behind the Beatles on the hot 100 singles chart. With 12 no.1 hits, 28 top 5 hits, 38 top 10 hits, 44 top 20 hits and 57 top 100 hits it’s not hard to see why

What I love are the bits in between the obvious Marilyn tribute where she's obviously NOT interested in the material stuff - the expensive gifts etc - lovely contrast ^-^ And, of course, the kicker is the little bit in the very beginning - where HE is the owner of the studio that she's shooting the video in! Love the bit where her current rich guy throws his keys to him - thinking that he's a hired help because of the way he's dressed - Love it!!

For variety- Try Madonna: Like A Prayer, This Used to Be My Playground, Deeper and Deeper, Say Goodbye, Ray of Light, Hanky Panky and Music....you will get a sense of how she is one of music’s ultimate chameleons.

Madonna has shown so much growth as an artist and her career from the 1980's to current times. To show off some of that change and growth I suggest these. 1990's: (upbeat): Ray of Light, Beautiful Stranger, 1990's (somber, but exquisitely so): Frozen, You'll See, The Power of Goodbye 2000's (upbeat): Music, Don't Tell Me, Beautiful Scars, and Deeper and Deeper. I know you will get plenty of suggestions from the 1980's, so I have only a handful of suggestions, but they are quite powerful. 1980's (these are quite personal to her and deal with her mothers death, her anger with her father and the second one is trying to keep her mothers spirit alive inside her.) Oh Father and Promise to Try. 1980's (somber, but exquisitely so): Love Don' Live Here Anymore and This Used to Be My Playground. 1980's (early performances): Everybody - Live at Danceteria [1982]) This was one year before the release of her first album. Like A Virgin at the 1984 MTV VMA Awards - This performance really put everyone on notice that she, (to borrow your phrase), didn't come to play. Finally Live Aid (yes, she was there). She performed Into The Groove, Holiday and Love Makes The World Go Round - she was a bit breathless on this one as she was running everywhere and wearing a heavy outfit, but she did get some vocal help from Nile Rodgers (also guitar) and Tom from the Thompson Twins. She returned the favor to Thompson Twins doing backing vocals on their cover of Revolution at the same event. The crazy thing about the song, Love Makes The World Go Round is that it was due to be released on an album that wouldn't be out until a year later.

Madonna really was brilliant when it came to her videos in the 80s and 90s, she always left you wondering what she was going to do next. The genius of this video is its reference. It was a modernized reinterpretation of Marilyn Monroe performing Diamonds are a Girl's Best friend in the 1953 comedy film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Monroe's character is a gold digger but an arguably sensible one. You should react to it for comparisons sake! For the materialistic 80s, it was kind of a perfect anthem 🙃🤭

When we married I didn't have the $5 for the license. Anybody who would marry me when I had no money was a keeper. That was 50 years ago. We're still married and retired. The bonus was her name "Maryjane".
