It's a great song and a great message, but it wasn't that groundbreaking to deal with themes like this in the 90s. Especially in this time there were so many songs that dealt with AIDS/HIV. Including songs like "Being Boring" (1990) and "Dreaming of the Queen" (1993) by Pet Shop Boys, "In This Life" (1992) by Madonna, "The Last Song" (1992) by Elton John, "Gone Too Soon" (1993) by Michael Jackson, "Streets of Philadelphia" (1993) by Bruce Springsteen, "Philadelphia" (1993) by Neil Young, "The HIV Song" (1994) by Ween, "She Thinks His Name was John" (1994) by Reba McEntire, "Hush Hush Hush" (1996) by Paula Cole & Peter Gabriel, "You Have Been Loved" (1996) by George Michael, "America" (1996) by Wu-Tang Clan, "Together Again" (1997) by Janet Jackson, and many others. Even in the Eurodance - which was very popular in Europa in the early and mid 90s - there were some songs that dealt with this theme (like "Russian Roullette" by Ice MC in 1994, "Willy Use a Billy Boy" by E-Rotic in 1995, or "Love Message" by Love Message in 1996). Even in the 80s there were some songs that dealt with AIDS/HIV, like "Boy Blue" (1986) by Cindy Lauper, "Sign o' the Times" (1987) by Prince, "Read My Lips" (1989) by Jimmy Somerville, or "Halloween Parade" (1989) by Lou Reed.

"Three letters took him to the final resting place" was meant for H. I.V. The lady was messing around with a lot of guys as what the pictures shown. And it passed to him with no protections. Back then in the early to mid 90s, there wasn't a cure until later on that late 90s. Thank u for reacting to that video bc that was honest & epic. Even at my high school, we did break it down & understand what was really meant & it did change our lives, well some of us. Bless to stay alive bc chasing waterfalls aint no joke. ❤✌🏾 React to "creep" or "red light special" or "unpretty".

There is currently no cure for HIV. There are meds that help control it. They can help people live "normal" life spans but people with HIV have it for the rest of their lives. Not everyone taking meds can tolerate them also.

That's one of the reasons why I really like TLC is because the majority if their songs are about real issues and have some kind of meaning behind them. Others songs to listen to are Baby Baby Baby, DEFINITELY CREEP, Red Light Special and Unpretty.

When my sons were old enough to understand, I had them listen to this song with the lyrics. I told them , these lyrics are VERY IMPORTANT!! To this day ( their in their 30s) , all I have to say is, Don’t go chasing waterfalls , and the’ll sing it. Then I get a hug from them. I also told them, “ When mom and dad are gone ,, you’ll only have each other. Never let a woman , money, etc. get in between the love you have for one another. I LOVE seeing how close they are 💖💖💖

You are a good Mum.😇🌸That made me tear up a bit. You are educating them and they are learning to know and treasure their own self worth and empathise with women too👍👏 It's a shame not all Mum's make sure their boys are educated about real life issues before they rain down upon them and it's too late. 😟
@rae7864 Жыл бұрын
That's sweet, you're a good mama. 💕 I'm just wondering why the message of the song is basically don't try anything new outside of your comfort Zone, right?? Like don't chase things bigger than you, stick to what you're used to? If I'm wrong can you please tell me what the message IS then
@patsloyan9755 Жыл бұрын
@@rae7864 To me , waterfalls, fall down. And the stories on the song all end badly. So if you’re faced with trying something that will more then likely end bad ( waterfalls) don’t do it. Rivers and lakes are steady running. So , if you want to try something or say something, think before you do. Go “with “ your heart , your gut feeling.Think things through, straight ( rivers , lakes) , then and only then , make your decisions, and think about the possible ( good) that can come of it.

TLC’s “Waterfalls” is based on people pursuing self-destructive ambitions. And these dangerous desires are termed as “waterfalls”. In other words, when TLC says “don’t go chasing waterfalls” this can be interpreted as “do not engage in the pursuit of self-destructive ambitions”. Moreover the “waterfall” symbolism as well as that of the line that follows which talks about sticking “to the rivers and the lakes that you’re used to” Read more at: www.songmeaningsandfacts.com/waterfalls-by-tlc/

This song made me cry again after all these years I cried again!! I'll tell you, I remember a small group of us were at a pizza place and a music video channel was on and we were watching this video for the first time and all of us at the same time gasped at the same scene you stopped the video at 2:41 We didn't expect that. TLC shed the light on some important issues happening back at that time. Most of us had the uncertainty when it came to HIV/AIDS there wasn't a whole lot of information on it but we were learning more as the years were going by and then of course kids trying to live the fast life as you say. It is an eye opening song and video. We appreciated the message these young women were conveying to us all. Glad you liked the song too! Until next time! Peace! ✌🏼☮

I am still saying you should do Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg. That was their first hit. That first album is one of the best albums. TLC started off more hip hop, they wore very colorful clothes, and they always wore condoms. Left Eye always had a condom covering her left eye. They had huge condoms hanging on their clothes. I used to be the guy that had all the music in high school, and everyone always wanted to jam this CD. My house was the house party. My mom left every weekend, and everyone was at my house partying. People always wanted to hear the TLC album. And, the other popular album was Tool Undertow. Those two CDs got requested more than anything.

The second verse deals with unprotected sex and promiscuity. As you can see, the woman convinces the man not to use a condom and they have sex. It is implied that he's hooked up w/ her many times not using protection. That's why it shows on the picture frame next to the girl the multiple men she's slept with in the past. Hence, the guy getting infected with HIV. If he hadn't let himself into temptation, he would've persisted on using a condom, but unfortunately he "got caught up in the heat of the moment". That's why T-Boz sings, "his health is fading and he doesn't know why, 3 letters (HIV) took him to his final resting place..."

When I first heard this song on MTV, I was so impressed with them for addressing in song an issue that affects mothers living in crime- ridden neighborhoods. She, the mother, pleaded with him to stop. A father would've grabbed him by the scruff & hauled his ass back inside, so there's the other side of that coin. TLC were just so real with this one; they also had something else lacking in todays' music scene: talent and Class. Appreciative review for this truly special message song. Peace, all...
