I switched from a 4790k that I was overclocking to the 8700k a while ago and the difference is massive in 1080p games. Especially games like CSGO where clock speeds dramatically improve not only the FPS but help with framedips and drops due to smokes and whatnot. If you have a microcenter by you where they are doing the bundle deals, it's definitely worth the upgrade as well as getting better and faster ram to work with in the new setups. That being said, you might want to wait until Intel drops their new line (Whenever that is) that has motherboards with PCIE4 so you have the newest and best technology with the new style of GPUS coming out.

It really is. As usual Nvidia over hyped the 3080. The end result is that in-game benchmarks OVERALL show the 3080 is 20% faster at 1440p and 30% faster at 4K. For someone who bought a used 2080 Ti for $475, it's hard to justify spending $800 (after taxes) for a 3080, which in my case is almost 70% more money for 20% gain at 1440p. 🤔

With only 20% added power draw you get about 25-35% better performance than the 2080ti with the same amount of cores able to do more operations at higher frequency without getting hotter

Hardware Unboxed ran their benchmarks with the 3950X and got very similar numbers. They also ran theirs in a case and only saw temps go about 3 degrees warmer than Jay did using a test bench. The cooler on these FE cards looks to be a real beast.

Though skimming, tomshardware seems to confirm my suspicion that at 1080 its basically gonna be a frame lock at an acceptable fps for more demanding titles where less demanding titles are a non issue. What I would like to see specifically is a comparison just like in this video with results from several different titles on more processors then the tomshardware article. yeah... except i'm pretty sure he's wrong: i've got dual CPU system, (coolers: 2x hyper 212) and second CPU is running circa 10°C hotter then first, and yeah - air from 1st cooler goes out "just slightly warmer" but difference is pretty big. (i'm talking in "air flow order" as they are actually labeled in reverse CPU0 and CPU1) That said - if you have AIO or some overkill cooler that doesn't have problems with cooling your CPU - that won't matter that much. Problems will arise if your cooler is on edge of cooling capacity already - but in that case you'd probably be better of with diffrent cooler. side note: this might be caused by the fact that i'm running fans pretty slowly: if you'd strap delta fans to cpu cooler, you'd probably don't see that big uptick in temps but my system can be pinned 100% for 5 days or so (CPU-Blender rendering) and i need to sleep with it in same room... so there is that.

They're playing the old AMD game of trying to deliver performance leaps over previous generations at the cost of power. 320+ watts is a lot of heat to deal with. My 5700XT dumps 250+ watts currently and heats my office up faster than I'd like. My house stays cool from AC, but my office starts getting uncomfortably warm when I play games for more than a few hours. I'm looking forward to seeing what AMD comes up with. If their ray tracing is competent and the price is right, I may buy a Big Navi card, but I'm also very interested in Nvidia's 3070. I hope both use less or the same wattage as my 5700XT. My previous card, a 1060 6GB, only used 120w. It's like AMD and Nvidia is racing to turn our PCs into ovens for the race to playable 4K. I'll just settle on 2K and a cooler card.

@@frozensno101 it's not done. www.tomshardware.com/features/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3080-ampere-cpu-scaling-benchmarks check this. If you use a 3070 you'll be even more fine. Future games with ray tracing and everything will also use the gpu more. I think the 4790k should be fine until ddr5

I must say loved your review. Been following you for a long time. It was nice to hear you say about upgrading other components to not bottleneck this GPU. I currently am running, i7 - 4770K on a Asus Maximus Extreme with 2 GTX1080Ti's in SLI From all my testing I knew I was bottle necking my system when I run games in 1080p but not so much when I run 4k. Hearing you basically confirm my reasoning to Upgrade now has me planning that, but we'll see on what to upgrade to based on budget that wont bottleneck this card or the next depending on availability once the demand cools down.

are you really asking if the 3090 can get 120 @4k, did you watch the video? the 3080 has trouble getting 60/70fps at 4k. and the 3090 will NOT be double the performance of a 3080.

3090 can supposedly do 8k 60. 8k is 4x 4k... in theory it should be able to do 240 but realistically I would expect it to do around 150 depending on the title.

At Ultra, no. But when using optimized settings @4K, High (Custom settings) you'll avg 90fps.

It hits 80-90fps in 4k on custom settings which are 95% the same as Ultra. There are certain settings in the game with extreme diminishing returns but high performance demands.
