“Nobody knows, nobody cares”. I’ve been a club date musician for a very long time and I totally agree with what you’re saying. People at weddings or restaurants are not there to see you. They are there to talk,laugh,drink,etc... you are there to add “ambience’ to the event or room. We call it “musical wallpaper” The reality is way more people will recognize and possibly respond to a simple popular song than to the altered chords you used in a song or the intricate solo lines that you play. As an experiment, I once played at a cocktail hour, the the first two bars of “wave” over and over and over again just to see if anyone noticed in any way. Nope!! I amused myself but it was also kinda sad to think that I was just a “prop”in the corner of a room while people ate and drank and partied. Oh well... this is the life we’ve chosen. When you get to play in more of a concert setting you get the recognition and appreciation that your ego longs for. Either way we are artists, musicians, creators and I’ll take that any day over doing spreadsheets in an office 9-5 for forty years. Love your videos. Thanks.

mister88,,,, I hear what you're saying,,, There are some of us who really listen,, as there are some who 'see',, and not just look,,, not many do,, not many see the deeper meanings or symbolism in the world around them,,, I just stumbled into Sangah Noona's you tube collections two weeks ago,, I LISTEN,, and am amazed at how she has complete command of a song, and where she wants to take it,,, and her talent is abundant,, but at the same time,, the people surrounding her are there for reasons other than to listen,,, yes, a bit sad to think,,, sort of like showing pearls to swine,, and the swine aren't even interested! Did you notice that birdcage with the open door and the photo of the hands in some of her videos??? THAT is a cool statement! I took it as being a statement on freedom,,,, If I were close to where she was playing/performing,,, I'd be there early, and often! Love her videos too!

Hi Sangah. I just discovered you throught this video. I started playing at a restaurant in 2018 and I´ve been playing there for 1 year now. It is a real relief to see that someone gets it. The owner of the restaurant loves that I have this atitude of just make ambience. Some people there valorizes and some really don´t care. I see everyone also, and I can play whatever I want because the owner let me. It is really gratificating. Again, it´s very nice to see that I am not the only one that loves doing that, with no audience, but guests. Thank you for sharing your experience!

. A Sangah Christmas Party The night was alive with a room filled with beautifully dressed guests. Sangah's play added a nice flavor of music to the party there. Competing emotional stories and loud reminiscing chatter were rumbling from everywhere. All enjoying tasty minimalistic sipping and tiny bites. Sparkling eyes and loving hugs. Then as a magical sound mixed its way around this beautiful room, all became overwhelmed. Then slowly all the guest were gone ! All there were transformed. I could clearly see... Sangah's room of guest, now became an audience. Every last one loving this gift of hearing what a heart sounds like as music. Sangah, I think you Sangahnize Christmas hearts.

I greatly enjoyed your explanation of the differences in the craft used in the two performance styles. I especially liked your comment about when you see someone is on their phone, you lower the volume of the music. It reminded me of an experience I had in Kyoto Japan. I was leaving a hotel to catch a flight back to the states. My taxi was waiting at the curb. In kyoto the taxi drivers dress in black suits, white shirts, black ties, white gloves and black chauffeur's hat. The taxis are black, impeccably clean, with bright white doilies on the back of the seats, which they change regularly. What impressed me the most and just gave me that tingly "ahh" moment. He opened the cab door with one hand and the other hand he placed over the top of the door frame. The "ah" moment was when I realized he did that so if I misjudged entering the cab, my head would hit his hand. I always enjoy hearing about how other people are thoughtful and take care of those around them so they may have a pleasant and enjoyable experience.

You commented at the end about your video perhaps being “boring.” It certainly was not. In fact, I learned from you a crucial distinction, the difference between a member of an audience and a guest. You also highlighted your approach in engaging with guests, seeing them, connecting with them, and tailoring your selections for them. Enjoyed the serious dissection of the differences. I'm with you - "Variety is the spice of life"'. When I am in a bar where there is live music I usually take my drink and get closer to the musician(s), even talk with them (unless their body language tells me I'm not welcome😌). Way more interesting than the talk in the bar. Haha so you were a little self conscious about being serious? No need, after 15 years you are surely an expert! Sound is excellent by the way. 🙂

I just found this video -you likely don’t check comments anymore. I was a lounge pianist for one summer until the Hotel sold their piano and regrettably every other Hotel and country club in my city has done the same. They did not want to pay the upkeep, unfortunately. I did what you do, Decided what music to play on the spot based on what was happening with the crowd. It’s great to have some affirmation that this makes sense to other people. Thank you for the video.

I played cocktail piano at private events for many years. Although I played jazz standards, I'm not truly a jazz musician. I would come prepared with set lists for the single reason that I don't remember all the songs that I know and I didn't want to be sitting there trying to think of which song to play next! LOL. The list kept me on track. Of course, I'd switch things around here and there depending on the room, but I essentially relied on my set lists 99% of the time.. as you said, the guests weren't really paying attention to me anyway. I enjoy your music! Keep it up.

Hi, a like your comparison and would particularly agree that a lounge musician has much more freedom for expressing its thoughts in a variety of ways. However, to be a good jazz musician, one has to be well specialized for jazz. On the other hand a lounge musician must not ultimately be a fantastic musician, but has to be capable of bringing a nice atmosphere to the moment in which he, or she is. A brilliant jazz musician might not be appropriate to be a good lounge musician. Your advantage is that you, as a charming female lounge pianist can bring an extra dimension to the entire lounge, but at the same time have to know how to act and interact. There is lots of psychology there. I used to be a lounge musician when I was a student of a School of Engineering. Music helped me to be a more balanced person. It is the same today when I “entertain” my students as a University Chair Professor, a serious guy, requesting a proper discipline when lecturing, but also offering to all my respecting students at all levels a privilege to occasionally respond as a pure lounge musician-pianist and by this inspiring them at least not to fall asleep during early morning lectures. Well done, I like your temper, interpretation and energy. I am sure that in some 10-15 years you will reach another level of maturity and would be keen to experience your thoughts about your profession again. Thank you!

My background is from a newspaper reporter/columnist/editor's viewpoint plus that of a performer myself (acting, emceeing, etc) is this -- you're viewpoint is explained very well vis-a-vis differences among concert, club and lounge pianist. I would get feedback as a writer, but not immediately (while writing)! As a stage actor doing a play I had to be constantly aware of and react to my audience without seeming to. The existence of the 'fourth wall' (the open space through which the audience views the show) means the performer must take into account the reactions of the audience but never overtly acknowledge they are there. Prolonged laughter in a comedy or spontaneous applause in a drama has to be waited out by the actors in ways that don't call attention to the fact they are waiting. Every performer, like a lounge pianist, is constantly aware of the audience. As a performer one has to be aware, and react appropriately. Very interesting take on that from your viewpoint as a lounge pianist, in the background but still required to be very aware of what's going on among the listeners. Thanks for the talk!

It's very interesting , being able to get an empathy with the mix of guest at any moment and then being able to think of the piece of music you think fits is a improvised element that a jazz club home of improvisation doesn't dish out to musicians who are as you say their to perform. It's the ultimate form of people watching in a way, you are part of their conversation how aware of it they are is part of a social dynamic. I've just become aware of your channel from your 2,5,1 practice routine, which I am starting on as an evolution from my beginner voicings, jazzy ;-)

Interesting discussion - most hotel guests are in some state that is far from attending a concert. They may be jet lagged, then all these practicalities relating to check in, other people attending the same meeting - people you may not have seen for years, most of these probably *hear* that there is some music in the hotel lounch but they are not there to *listen*. And all of us who admire you (no you are not crazy - you are funny, talented and a bunch of other positive words) - we come here to listen to what you are saying - not just hearing your vocie as some kind of background. Sangah!!! I watched all 10 minutes. I agree with everything you said. So true about lounge pianists having guests as opposed to audiences. I have always loved the fact that I can read the room in between songs. I'll be playing oldies, then I might see kids with their parents and I start playing Disney, etc. I didn't mean to label you as a jazz pianist. I understand your point of view now and I agree. I only meant to say you play jazzy stuff well. I play everything as well. I do 10 decades. So, I constantly jump around from all decades and genres. That's the most fun. Yes, labeled jazz musicians can be really snobby and one dimensional. I jump from Sinatra, to the Beatles, to Rihanna, to Celine and Whitney. Lol High five to Lounge piano!

Hello crazy girl! Been watching your videos for a while but this is the first time I comment. First of all needless to say that your are great, joyful and funny pianist. I love watching you play and learning tricks from you. I am by no means a pro pianist let alone a pianist if I compare myself to you :), but I do play the piano in my free time or for friends and family. This being said, I find your comment soooo true about your "listeners" not caring.. ! I find that discouraging (almost disrespectful in a a way) that people are unable to appreciate your talent and the many hours of work you have put in. Just to say that if I were one of them I`d surely be enjoying my time listening to you until the end of your gig!!! I guess one can only appreciate someone's talent when it is understood how hard it is to get there. Anyways, don't worry you have your "true" public and fans here. Keep on entertaining the one who cares :) .. Thank you.

Not boring at all. Easy to listen all the way through to the end. Regarding the mic, it sounds great.

Yup - you are right on about this info! I played harp at a very fancy hotel for 5 years. Pros: Great experience, learned a ton of songs, was great to improv alot, got my chops totally polished playing so often. Cons: felt invisible to the snooty lounge crowd, even wait staff at the tea, were snooty! some times they would respond with clapping (oh nice - they listened!) some would walk by me like I wasn't there. I also played everything in all genres. But the pay was not very good. Nevertheless, I would do it all again (for more pay of course)...nothing like playing music!. Good video :)

That distinction was helpful to me. I'm an an amature piano player who performs monthly for our "happy hour" at my retirement community and weekly at the Healthcare center at dinnertime. The "guests" are sitting around tables in conversation or eating their dinner so my playing is for background, not a performance. And I do use these times to improvise on the spot - not to display virtuosity (which is not in my skill level) or try to dazzle with a worked out arrangement. Instead I just give my fingers license and enjoy what happens. I do have some set lists I have created in the MobileSheetsPro software but often just go page by page though a Fakebook. At the health center my back is to the "guests" unless I take my digital piano to the venue. I will try to be more sensitive to the guests at Happy Hour. I really enjoy your style - especially you implementation of a walking base.
