Jazz Snare Drum Tune Up Kit

In this video, I review a snare drum tune up kit by Evans. I've seen this thing out there for a while and always thought it was a great concept. I had the recent opportunity to check one out for myself and here, I share my impression and if I would recommend it for you.

I was messing around with my old metallic snare, a Mapex Mars series that I bought used, and thinking about changing the heads I remembered that you made this great video. I'll give this kit a try. I'm sure it will give a new life to my old snare! Thank you Von for your effort in making this videos! It helps me a lot!

How would you say the durability of these compare to the Ambassador Fiberskyn by Remo? My Fiberskyn snare heads always rippled up in the middle of the head after a while and made the head unusable because you couldn't tension them out

Thanks for watching and for the comment! I feel your pain. Happened many times to me too. I think the Calftones are on par with Fiberskyn durability if not a little bit better. It all depends how much we bang on them. I've used both over the years and the current iteration by Evans is definitely better sounding, easier to tune and more durable. If you get some Calftones, let us know how it goes! Keep swinging my friend 🤙

So are you migrating away from the Remo Fiberskyn/Skyntone heads?

Steve, I just might be. Lately the prices and availability of Fiberskyns are a hassle. Skyntones don't have enough "meat" for my taste. Calftones are so much easier to tune up than both Fiberskyns and Skyntones and brushes sound better too. A few years ago, Calftones didn't seem as durable as Fiberskyns but I think Evans has worked out the kinks. Seems they are on par with Fiberskyns now. I will tell you too, playing without the snares and letting all the snare and toms sing with my Calftones is really is fun. Incredibly melodic. Always great to connect my friend 🤙

Hello! Im thinking of getting an acoustic kit and i was wondering if changing the resonant heads on the snare and the toms actually make a difference? I will change the top heads but should i change the resonant heads too?

Thanks for watching and for the question! Actually, for me, the stock resonant heads work fine. Just definitely change the batter side heads. Keep swinging my friend 🤙
