Always a pleasure to see you venture on new borders of art! In 2021 I was, myself, practicing "Bleach-Painting" on fabric (or as it's called over the Internet [whatever that is...] "Reverse tie'n'dye") and I learned some good advice I'd like to share with everyone who wants to try this at home. From what i've learned, it's better to use thick fabric (like sweaters and big-fat-winter hoodies) so that the liquids won't spread that much. Also, don't wash them before bleaching, so that bleach drops will stay on the surface of the fabric and do their job with precision, because when the fabric is new, it has this kind of "waterproof chemicals" that protects the sweater until it's sold and washed the first time ^^ (Don't worry, it's not dangerous on your skin, not as much as BLEACH!!!) Do not hesitate to dilute your bleach with some water to get some different shadings (or bleach twice for a brighter result, but don't forget to let it dry before adding the second layer. Else it will spread through wet fabric and it will give you a blurry result...) Another advice for beginners is to use a white crayon (those made for school blackboards) or a projector (go for the cheapest one, you won't need a good resolution for that) so you can draw sketches when you still get the chance to change your ideas =P. Oh, and don't spray too much, spraying bleach can make a bit of contrast, but it also makes everything blurry around ,and the bleach particles get in your lungs and that is TOTALLY NOT COOL... =( And finally, protect yourself! (Nooo... I'm talking about gloves and a facemask for spray paints, you silly minds...) Aaaaand if you like bleached hoodies and sweaters, there's a Tattoo Artist in Berlin, Germany, who has mastered the art of bleaching, his name is YoungHearted / Felix Seele (check on Instagram and prepare to be mind-blown. Thanks again, Mr Jazza, to take us on Artistic Adventures! And if any of the advices I've gave doesn't fit your way of doing art, do whatever you want.. THAT'S ART! (Des Goûts Et Des Couleurs) Greetings from Switzerland (not Sweden, Switzerland : Watches, Chocolate and Banks) XOXO Lazlo.

If you use freezer paper to cut out your stencils you can iron it onto the shirt and itll stick to the fabric long enough to work as a very crisp stencil but can peel right off afterwards without leaving any residue!
@waterking742 жыл бұрын

I've used adhesive shelf paper... works really well... Easy to peel off too... Great for wrapping bleach image from the front, around the side and onto the back... I tried little tape loops but the edges of the paper I used kept curling after applying bleach.
@janesmith46172 жыл бұрын
@@waterking74 Freezer paper is widely used to stabilise fabric, and to act as a stencil on fabric. It's great stuff. Put it shiny side down on the fabric, iron it with a reasonably hot iron, and it's stuck fast until you peel it away. I iron silk onto it to hold it flat and still while I draw on the silk with outlining paints called gutta, which works as a resist.

I’ve been doing bleach art on shirts for years. You can cut infinitely complex stencils on freezer paper and iron them shiny side down to the shirts to get a perfect seal. Then spray with a fine spray bottle.
@restlessparadox19532 жыл бұрын
do you have any other tips for bleach art on shirts? it looks fairly interesting to me, not sure ill try it, but i might!
@jacobpalomarez53492 жыл бұрын
@@restlessparadox1953 If you're working with spray bottles work in a very well ventilated area with fans and a respirator if possible. Also work on a surface like a trash towel that will catch any overspray. Have paper towels and newspapers handy for cleanup and masking. Also keep your clothing iron clean so as not to leave traces of bleach or wax residue on your shirt. As for bleach, I usually use a 50%-75% solution in water. They behave a bit differently. I usually don't use 100% except for details with small tools or where vibrancy is more important. Its better to creep up on the desired lightness with multiple patient passes to get more even texture. Different spray bottles and technique can create desired patterns, like a fine mist or large dots. Cheap little spritz bottles often have their springs rust out so go ahead and buy like 4 from the dollar tree or something. I cut my stencils with an exacto knife. Multi-tone stencils can be created by pre cutting a stencil and removing parts of a stencil after each pass of bleach. For example an object with a lit and shaded side, I would place a stencil with the highlights already cut out and every tone of shade below that still attached. I would spray, then reveal the next lightest part of the stencil and spray again. Thats about it. You can get creative with tools and stencil designs.

Here's some tips i learned: - use chalk for a sketch - use baking soda to stop the reaction (this is important on clothes as beech can eat all the way trough it)
@pocarski2 жыл бұрын
Baking soda wouldn't work too well since bleaching is a redox reaction, and baking soda is really only good for fighting acids. Something like ammonia would work better, if you don't mind the fact that it smells awful and the reaction has toxic products (but they're in a very small quantity so you'd be worried about the stank way more)

Please...for the sake of your own health and those around you, be wary of mixing stuff together. Seriously. Unless you know what you're doing it's better to just stick to paper or cardboard to keep bleach from seeping through or going to areas that are supposed to remain as the original color base. (Just like Jazza did in this video. As you can see, it works, and has less potential of greating a deadly gas. That's not to say only bleach and baking soda does so....but I'd rather not test it out.)

I'm doing this currently in my GCSE art sketchbook (year 10) and it's been so cool seeing how to use it and different techniques something I liked trying was seeing how more diluted bleach had a different effect on different dilutions on ink I don't know whether anyone is going to read this or care but a good way to try it is with a piece of watercolour paper so it doesn't make the page rip and any bleach but using "quink" ink is a really good way of doing it as it's made with a dark blue and yellow which makes the bleach bring out the colours and just any paintbrush

I just wish he had put the moon on the other side so the shadows would've made sense 😄 EDIT - Also, they make markers that you can fill with water to use on one of those coloring water mats for kids. I put watered down bleach in them and also soak old markers in bleach and use those to make designs on my son's shirts that he wears to work. He works in a kitchen and was constantly coming home with bleach stains on his work shirts. By adding some bleached designs at home, it looks a little more intentional and not so sloppy 😁👍

Damn I really wanna make a bleach skull shirt but 1. I could never get myself to use the materials safely. 2. I could never actually do the skull properly.

I use to bleach shit into my black shirts in high school. I learned very quickly that 1: you have to put a good barrier between the front and back, and 2: Bleach eats away at the fibers so much that if you leave it on too long, it will basically disintegrate. Good times!

Diluted Hydrogen peroxide soak will stop the bleach when you’re done
@MommyOfZoeAndLiam2 жыл бұрын
If you ever do this again, look up "Thick Water" that tie dyers use to help keep die off of areas, also I believe you need to spray it with hydrogen peroxide to stop the reaction or it will just keep going. The skull turned out pretty cool, I bet you could do it even better with a bit more practice and understanding of the medium.

I wouldn’t joke about drinking bleach. It’s kinda dangerous and such a touchy thing to make light of since many people have done that intentionally as a way to end their life.

I always thought it would look cool to pre bleach areas, painting and designs onto fabric and then go over it (after washing and drying) with gelatin and fabric dye to add other colour painted elements. I haven't had the chance to try it yet, but the ones that didn't come out so well could be good candidates for that. I'm sure you have the supplies around, and fabric markers as a last step could be great for really sharp details.

😍😍😍 Tip for working with bleach on fabric (if this hasn’t been mentioned before) . After you have rinsed all the initial bleach out of the garment, do a soak in a chlorine neutralizer, like the stuff used to de chlorinate fish tanks. It makes a HUGE difference in the long run of the care of your garment 😊 Awesome video I learned so much about painting with bleach on other materials besides fabric 👏🏻😊🖤

You should try doing this on dark felt paper and chalk. It was an art project we did in our our class. So our teacher taught us to draw something like a landscape using chalk. Then paint it over with bleach. It gives a nice, more strong effect ovo

Half of pigments can kill you (slowly or quickly) so it's nothing new. Remember: always check toxicity of your art supplies and generally try not to eat or smoke while using the toxic one

Doesn't the bleach eat holes in the fabric? Every time I've accidentally gotten bleach on sheets or clothes, they came out of the washer looking like they'd been blasted with a shotgun.
@js10credible2 жыл бұрын
Yes it will rot whatever fabric it's used on. It's completely temporary, the shirt will start getting holes.

Use of a double action airbrush would be a good method of application to have more control over the surface contact and satuation levels of bleach into the material giving more control over the layering in smooth values as well as texture . only downfall would be the overall time it would take to allow each layer value to fully set in before applying the next .

You could try out what happens, if you prime a miniature with light colors, put dark ink color on it and bleach the edges. If this may create some cool looking edge highlighting
@zsmall2 жыл бұрын
Cool video! If you do something like this again you can use wax paper for stencils. You can iron it to the shirt so it’ll create better outlines than the paper that folds up and bleach get underneath it.

Oh wow, that's so cool! I had no idea bleach would work with ink and some of those effects combining the two were extremely interesting. I've been planning on a bleach project where I'd draw using a bleach pen or an equivalent homemade version, and then use fabric paint or dye to add back in some color. I was thinking mehndi designs on a nebula background.

This is super cool. I wonder if you could match the hue of the bleached fabric with some brighter fabric paints and then really bring out some of those highlights after the bleaching is done, just to really push that illusion of form.

My high school art teacher in the 80’s taught us this trick with Parker Quink Ink. We’d stretch paper on a board and brush on ink and let dry. Then ‘wash’ the paper with a light bleach solution, then let that dry. After that we’d then use the ‘aged’ paper for maps or anything artwork that needed an olde worlde feel. Way better than the ‘tea bag and coffee’ technique.

I've been reverse tie dyeing t shirts in bleach for years. Only problem is the bleach weakens the fabric so the shirts don't last long. The original instructions suggest soaking in a vinegar solution to counteract the bleach, not sure if this helps. Loved the painting on t shirts.
