Man, I find this so hard! I've been playing rock guitar for a long, long time, and straight 8ths is ingrained into my brain.

I'm pretty new, but still... I've never heard such an interesting and inspiring talk about rhythm. Thank you!

YES! It's, in fact, just eighth-notes in the end. It's a matter of attitude towards them

Thanks for your comment. YES it's sad for you guys. I think more awareness of that GREAT culture is needed for the youth in your country. It's almost like "jazz" in the USA ... the young people are (mostly) not aware of the great traditions... anyways, thanks for watching!

Hello Marc, Great discourse on swing and swing feel. Can you please elaborate more on the dotted quarter note rhythmic motif you speak, and demonstrate, at 5:00 spot in the video? If you have a transcription of that, it would be very helpful. The dotted quarter has always given me trouble in conceptualizing it. Thank you for always presenting great music insights.

I play swing bossa Nova's ect.. usually that on guitar. I was looking for somebody to show me examples and I stumbled on your site. Liked and subscribed, will be checking into your material.I have about a five year old piano youtube channel with many informal lessons. I took classical piano and have had jazz piano lessons but I have a natural swing which varies from song to song and would be complicated to write. What I am looking to do is know how to play a very structured long short swing sound, put it on paper, and get the structured sound down.. Which is just an aproximation Then I could put my own accents ect on it. A computer could do this with an algorithm, but I like the human touch. My goal is to know the right way.. which there a number of different methods, and then play it with feel. Irecently started using musescore and it is fantastic. I'm sure you've tried it.. It's similar to finale. I have about a hundred videos. I have good timing but to take apart what I am doing on say a 12 bar blues piece, very difficult. I put notes where I feel they should go as I play.. I could write it out but the accent is hard to get and that varies. I know your busy but peruse some of my work and give me feedback and do you play piano,?

Could you give a few lessons how to perfect that double swing time like Pat Martino or Wes Montgomery play. Are there some picking and plucking techniques as well as hammer ons and pull offs etc. That would be very helpful please. Types of picks and strings etc etc.

I've got agree about jazz is similar latin music, especially cuz bossa nova comes from the jazz. But I notice that most american play in format 4/4 and we brazilians make 2/4 sounds more swing than jazz.. but jazz there's yo own swing. I think jazz is straightnswing as well;; and if you mix up jazz with samba , it's a big explosion...like Sergio mendes -Voce ainda não ouviu nada !.. for those that dont heard it's one of my favorite songs...

Oh well ... on the "equipment" level, I don't think it matters much. To really play in double-time like Wes and Martino, just play a slow tune and start playing lines as if the tempo is double. Changes go by "twice as slow" as you'd expect. Maybe I'll make a video about that.

Ok. Start by watching one of my vidz called "Charlestons Exercises" or something like that... Go into the "videos" section of the website and you'll find a pdf with exercises. This is really the best way to get into "odd groupings of even notes". In fact, if you can just play consecutive dotted-quarters without losing your place, you're all set! (-:

Hey do a lesson on son Clave....?????? I've seen some lessons on it and the guys are to much over the subject. It's got to be easier than I've seen it presented.

A good, classic example of a drummer doing not-triplet-ish swing time, is Roy Haynes's brushwork on Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments". kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXmshKJmp5KImas
