Its assembly time for our 1971 Euro Look Beetle. We begin on our chassis and more specifically the pedal assembly. We’ve cleaned up, degreased and painted the original pedal assembly, along with the original hardware and we show how to assembly the pedals and install them in the chassis. Then we’ll run new cables and we use the clutch cable access hole we cut in to make things much easier. Follow along and enjoy!

Whenever possible we reuse the original parts and hardware. All original hardware was cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner with degreaser then scrubbed and rinsed. All metal hardware was then soaked in vinegar and scrubbed with a wire brush to eliminate any rust, rinsed and then soaked in oil to protect the metal. Large parts were cleaned with degreaser, soaked in vinegar and then when appropriate, painted to protect the finish. This is why we say save your hardware, there is no sense in replacing hardware, especially original hardware if it can be restored and reused!

I like these videos that show the "whole assembly" while the chassis is in 1000 parts. I would love to see a video of how to do all of this while the bug is fully assembled.

Nice teaching. It’s too bad you had to show buyers how to grind off the Empi parts to fit, but it’s nice that you did. The accelerator pedal-sled not fitting properly was a hoot, though. Just chuck it? I like that. And I hope you have contacted Empi and told them of the figment problems. If enough vendors complain, maybe they’ll make parts that fit. After all, making them properly shouldn’t cost them an arm and a leg, and I would gladly pay a bit more for a part that fits, even if producing a good fit costs a little more. Regardless, the teaching was well done. The only thing I might have added was to tell owners how to adjust the brake pedal/master cylinder pushrod so the compensating ports aren’t blocked. Thanks for the video. Good job.

Great video! I just rebuilt my pedal assembly and wasn’t positive about the spring location. I have a 72 SB and have body offed it and completely taken everything apart, done a ton of metal work etc and never came across your 71 SB rebuild series until 2 days ago, would have been a real help! I have watched many vids since and will use your awesome knowledge to help me finish!!!! Thanks Amigo!!!!!!!😎

Looked like typical EMPI engineering quality on that throttle pedal. Maybe I’ll just keep a lookout for an old “Barefoot” pedal instead.

My pedals were installed however they are leaning a little forwarded towards the seat. Question is there a metal shim on the floor with a screw that I could adjust the degree on the pedal. Thank you. I'm not a mechanic just I'm just trying to correct the problem .

Yes, there is a small metal "stop plate" www.jbugs.com/product/113721231E.html that is bolted to the floor pan behind the pedals. Moving it towards the firewall (front of the car) will allow the pedals to sit closer to the seat. Moving it towards the seat will move the pedals closer to the firewall. Do not remove the plate without bracing the clutch pedal otherwise the pedal will most likely fall to the floor (towards the seat) and you'll have to remove the pedal assembly to reattach the clutch cable.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2LZY6GXpq58eaM - in this video we install an earlier pedal assembly without a clutch cable access hole. Between the two videos, you should have a pretty good idea of what is involved.

Isn't there some sort of rubber buffer that goes on the back of the clutch pedal arm? Keeps the pedal from marring up the front bulkhead if it goes too far forward.

No, not originally. Some sort of bumper wouldn't be a bad addition though if you can come up with something.

I wonder if the pedal is meant to work with a roller pedal setup and EMPI forgot to tell everyone.
