Thanks for showing how the hood latch release is held in place at the glove box.

I bought a nearly clapped-out ‘71 Super Beetle from my sister for $50, back in ‘82. Drove it for about a year until I needed a more reliable ride for a new job. I have owned many cars since then, but that Beetle is the one I’d choose, if I could have any of them back!

How did you attach the hood release cable? I cannot remove it from the old lever since it is nothing that can be screwed off. If I break it loose, how would I reattach it? I can’t use the old cable which has rivets and I don’t have tools for that. And how did you line up the attachment for the last screw holding the lever from inside the glove box? It looks so much easier than it is.
@Sam_Mebane
@Sam_Mebane 2 ай бұрын
The hood release cable is attached to the lever with a small dowel pin the presses in or out. A small screwdriver or even a nail can be used to push the dowel pin out. I use a pair of pliers to press it back in place. Small nuts and bolts can be used instead of rivets, to hold the lever assembly to the glove box. Lining up the handle bracket is very easy with the windshield and hood out of the way, yes but with an assistant, the job isn't bad if they are in place. Someone inside the car can poke the screw through the bottom of the dash and a person looking in the trunk can line up the bracket with the screw.

@@Sam_Mebane the glove box is in, the cable connected, but how is the cable held so that the length is not too long to move the catch? I’ll send a photo by email.

@@Sam_Mebane I was able to separate the two arms to slide the cable onto the already installed new lever which I probably did not need after all. Then I closed the two arms. The other issue was solved by attaching the plastic bracket to the glove box which had been installed with rivets to the old glove box. I see that there are two means for stabilizing the cable which was different from this plastic bracket.

I have been waiting for this part in the series for a long time! I have a 71 Super Vert, and I have an issue where my hood release cable won't pull my latch enough to release the hood pin consistently, can you go over the proper process of setting up/testing the hood release cable?
@Sam_Mebane
@Sam_Mebane 3 жыл бұрын
We cover it in part 2. Most likely your issue is movement in the housing for the cable.

Looking at the store, there is a roll pin that must be reused to make the connection. How can I remove it without damage and how is it installed?

Just wondering Where to get All the relays to replace on a 74. On Jbugs didn't see em.
@Sam_Mebane
@Sam_Mebane Жыл бұрын
There are only 2 relays that are essential, the headlight relay - www.jbugs.com/product/111941583.html and the flasher relay - www.jbugs.com/product/111953227D.html. The door buzzer and any other relays you might have aren't essential.

It appears as though the fuel vent hose you use is just a soft flexible rubber hose ? What type of hose and what inner diameter? I didn’t notice it in the parts listing as all hoses looked to be braided/less flexible than what was being used. This is the last hose I need to finish off all my new fuel lines/tank. Thanks as always for these videos. Super helpful!

It's there - www.jbugs.com/product/N203531.html just braided vacuum hose.

@@Sam_Mebane thanks so much! I was originally looking on my phone so the smaller screen I didn't see the details, but after watching it on my computer could see it was a braided hose. lol Sorry about that. Thanks so much! Got it ordered!

@@Sam_Mebane did you use 3 feet in length for that vent line ?
@Sam_Mebane
@Sam_Mebane 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnmartin5153 I used more than 3 feet for sure, but it all depends on how you route the line. I just ran it to atmosphere, under the car. Later, I actually changed the vent hose routing later to the top vent as the lower vent would occasionally siphon since it wasn't run to a charcoal canister or other emissions components.

Sam one other question on the fuel vent line that is run out the bottom of the car. Does it just hang out the bottom a bit and that’s it? Or does it run somewhere/is mounted somewhere underneath? Thanks so much!
@Sam_Mebane
@Sam_Mebane 2 жыл бұрын
It is just a vent for the fuel tank, fuel can't get out of the tank if air can't get in. Originally VW ran the vent hoses through various canisters and hoses in the trunk and back to the engine compartment as part of smog equipment.
@jamiecamp1376
@jamiecamp1376 2 жыл бұрын
@@Sam_Mebane I assumed it just hung out the bottom, but just wanted to make sure you guys weren't running it anywhere specific. Thanks again! Really appreciate you and the JBUG team.

I can’t seem to fit the Top Left Vent Hose on either the tank or the Filler Neck fitting? The link sent me to 12mm hose but it seems to small and I cannot get it to fit. Would the correct size be the 17mm vent hose for a 71 super beetle?
@Sam_Mebane
@Sam_Mebane 8 ай бұрын
Grab a micrometer (or a measuring tape if that's all that is handy) and double check. We used to offer a 15mm vent hose but it has been discontinued for some reason. It seemed to be the most common size too, but we use the 17mm nowadays if needed and clamp it down.

Hey Sam, ong shot, but I have a situation. 74 super, the trunk won't open but it isn't the cable. I went through the escape hatch (the hole) on the underside of the body, no dice. I think that somehow the sliding piece that secures in the groove isn't moving. How in the hell do I get this thing to open? I also was able to remove the screw but I can't get the handle off. I'm trying to avoid cutting the handle. Any suggestions? Also, the spring came out.
@Sam_Mebane

I've only ever been successful by cutting the handle. I've never been able to get a locked/stuck hood open otherwise.

@@Sam_Mebane thanks for responding. How would I go about cutting the cable? I want to let you know that I called Jbugs and the guy who took my call spoke VERY highly of you,
@Sam_Mebane
@Sam_Mebane 2 жыл бұрын
@@facesbybriana4708 the cable can be cut by calling your cable provider and telling them you're tired of payin...oh I got confused, sorry. I didn't mention cutting the cable, I said I to cut the handle. Literally, cut of the hood handle, a saw-zall works best. You have to be cautious if your paint is in good shape. The handle needs to be cut off the hood, there is a bolt at the top of the handle, and one at the bottom, along with the push button at the bottom. Once the handle is removed, there is nothing to hold the hood to the latch, and the hood can be opened.
