A couple of weeks ago I made a video about my “Ultimate PC/ Mac Setup” and you guys seemed to really like it, but one of the questions that I kept getting was: “How did you get the Mac and PC to show up on one screen?”
Well in this video I will be going over step by step exactly how I accomplished this, and hopefully after watching this video you will be able to implement some of these things into your setup!

I started using Synergy at work in 2011. We had a Windows desktop for all the business apps, and a Linux workstation for the development, testing, running virtual machines, etc. It works great for us. Around 2016 we got MacBooks for testing on those as well, but we didn't get an additional monitor, we use the MacBook display directly. Adding the Mac as a third device was easy. Its great not needing to use that crappy Mac keyboard. Also, Synergy converted its code from opensource to proprietary sometime between 2012 and 2016. Synergy started charging money for the software. However, the original opensource code was branched to form Barrier. Barrier remains opensource. Barrier does not have quite as many features, but all the keyboard/mouse functionality is there. It just lacks the "nice-to-haves" like being able to drag and drop files between the machines, or transfer files.

I basically have two separate laptops connected to their own monitors (so two laptops and two monitors in total). I use Synergy to share single keyboard/mouse with 2 PC and 1 Mac (and sometimes Raspberry Pi as well). I DON'T recommend audio splitter! Instead, use the headphone out of mac to line in of PC, and then enable monitoring in windows audio. The better solution would be to use a simple audio mixer like Behringer, which costs around $80+, but well worth the price.
@javaman2883
@javaman2883 2 жыл бұрын
The audio mixer is very useful here. Not just to make fast adjustments to the volume of each, but also in sound clarity. Due to the capacitance/inductance of having the output stage of two sources being connected together, it does weird things with the frequency response. Imagine a multi-band equalizer where someone decides to just crank one way up, and another one way low, but the rest are all in the middle. It generally sounds muffled but may have prominent high pitch sounds that are not desirable.

1:57 You can't merge two outputs like this. This is like shorting. One driver could be trying to raise the voltage (that's how speaker outputs work, by dialing voltage up and down at audible frequencies) and the other could be actively trying to pull it low. This causes a tug of war between the two and they may even burn each other off. You have to use a mux chip to do this properly. There could be some product that uses a mux chip, use that instead.

But in this case server needs to be always on or at least on when you want to use second PC. I recently dealt with this problem myself but I had an added computer of my significant other who could also connect to the dock. I solved it using a KVM (usb only). Set up 2 Monitors 1 Dell Docking station ( For any laptop to come and use desk) 1 Desktop PC 1 KVM switch Desk top and Docking station connected to both monitors in independent inputs. They both connect the USB to the KVM and all my USB peripherals are connected to the KVM ( Keyboard, Mouse, Headphone USB dongle). I opted not to go for a more fancy KVM with HDMI multiplexing since the monitors had plenty of inputs and getting the best performance for the video output requires more high end KVMs. Whenever I adopt some speakers on the desk I will incorporate the 3.3mm Jack splitter or find alternative solution. Maybe with more high end KVM if I don’t need to use at same time.

I have a Windows desktop hooked up to 3 4k monitors, and an M1 mini hooked up to QHD and WSXGA displays and use Synergy to connect them. It isn't perfect as some keys don't get passed through (Windows Print Screen key doesn't pass through for example), and I have to hit the key on the Windows keyboard but there are only a few like that. What I would really love is macOS Spaces where you can flip between Windows and macOS on the same monitor.

Agree, if your outputs are not protected, using a splitter you are sending electricity to your output of your other computer and vica versa. Sending el to an output is a dangerous thing. You might smoke your output amps in your audio ouput devices. There are multiple active solutions that will resolve this issue available. Barrier is the opensource package that was forked from the original Synergy just before they turned the license proprietary. It supports Windows (XP and later), Mac, Linux, RaspberryPI, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, up to 16 devices concurrently. It supports the all the keyboard and mouse functions, plus clipboard sharing. They say they focus on just the core functionality, make sure it works well, rather than adding nice to haves like drag and drop or file sharing which have other solutions already.

There is a risk using an audio splitter cable to merge signals. There is a risk for the output on one device to blow the output on the other device. The splitter is meant to split output for two inputs, not to connect two outputs. I would recommend an active mixer, to avoid the risk of breaking the line output amplifiers. A line output typically has low impedance, designed to be connected to an input with higher impedance. If you connect to another low impedance device, you will increase the stress on the output amplifier increasing risk of blowing it. There are commonly added designs to make them more fool proof, in case of wrong connection, but don't trust on that to save you forever or every time.
@gabiold

Exactly that's what I wanted say. It is a bad idea to use that splitter cable as a mixer. That's why the volume drops, because the ouputs loading each other.

Alternatively you can buy a DP KVM Switch for around $50. Ugreen do a really good one. (Also HDMI) You plug your keyboard/mouse dongle into the USB ports in the front. HDMI/DP in the back. And then just press a button to switch between computers. This way you don't need to have a server running at all times. I have my MacBook connected to a dock. Then from the dock into the DP Switch. My PC into the DP switch. And then the Switch into my monitor (LG 38 ultrawide) I also have a USB drive in the switch as well. So I can quickly transfer files between computers if I need to. The UGreen is particular good because it does 8k at 60mhz, or 4k at 240hz. Which is great as my monitor does 166 at 4k 1600p. Also HDR as well... Using the switch is the ONLY way to use my K100 AIR from Corsair on BOTH my computers. I simply plug the Corsair into the switch, and then install the software on both Mac and the PC. This way I have full functionality of the software, macros and lighting. As far as each PC is concerned. It's as though you are connecting/disconnecting the USB. My Mac complains about ejecting the USB drive, but hey. You can silence that if you need to. You don't have to use UGreen, but if you want to use something like a Corsair/Logitech RGB keyboard you will need a POWERED version.

Great Video! Couple questions... Instead of a monitor will this work with one smart TV? And, will this work with 2 Windows PC's on one smart TV? Thanks!

Thanks for the instructions! What about limitations? Screen Resolutions and / or Framerates? As Synergy is using WIFI I guess there is also a measureable latency? So i would expect it´s not working in gaming scenarios, right? Thank you!

I use barrier which is a free version and it works great, latency is not a problem for me. Also if it is a issue just have your gaming pc as the main host and not the client.

I’m a lifelong Mac user but I have my first custom PC workstation on the way. My question: If I want to limp my M1 Mac along while I see about fully migrating to the PC, do I use the Mac as the server and use the apple keyboard as my input for both devices while making my keyboardless, mouseless PC the client or should I get a PC keyboard and make the PC the server? I’m told by synergy that though a keyboard and mouse are detected across both platforms that a Wacom tablet will not have the same cross platform functionality. Luckily I have two tablets but I may only plug it into the PC since that will become my serious new workstation. Thanks for any advice you can lend. Great video BTW.

Do you have a solution for splitting multiple usb devices between a Mac and a pc? I do have a basic 4 port hub split between 2 computers. In order to expand the 4 port hub I was going to daisy chain additional hubs behind it so that when switching the automagic transfer of 10+ usb devices, this would include my digital mixer, I use the usb interface for the sound and would prefer that it switches between both Mac and PC rather than using a separate audio cable.

I came across your video today!! Excellent idea. I’ve been searching for a way to keep my Mac Studio and build a gaming pc that can be used on one monitor such as the 49 inch monitor in the video. Your video shows both the Mac and PC on each half of the monitor. What I want to know is can you switch between each one (I.e Mac Studio and PC) independently so that you can use the full 49 inch monitor for either computer??

My question is: in case you want to use the mouse on the mac monitor to migrate to the monitor connected to windows, is it necessary that the application that recognizes such monitors can always be connected to the internet? In case you don't have internet access, can you still migrate from one monitor to the other?

Instead of a Female to 2-Male Y-Splitter, can I use a Male to 2-Female splitter? My laptop and desktop computer are far apart. The included 6 feet cable is not long enough. My only other option is to use two 3.5mm extension cables, which drives up the price significantly.

Hey Jesse. Great content! Do you need a monitor that supports PIP/PBP inorder to use Synergy with 1 monitor?
@chunkyg6715
@chunkyg6715 Жыл бұрын
PBP doesn’t affect how synergy works in that it will work exactly the same with separate monitors each connected to a separate computer. It will also work with 3 or more computers, multi monitor setups and different operating systems.

Hi... I have a question. You have two systems on the screen at the same time. One left one right. You would never be "in front" like directly in front of your main work. It would always be either left or right to you. Is that a problem for you? It probably depends on what work you are doing. Would you "shift" your chair to look directly into one of the sides and have the other side as a secondary monitor? If your focus main task is on the left you would probably have to look slight angled into that side and have the other side as a secondary. How do you manage that with a screen that large and displaying tow sources at once?
@myutubes0
@myutubes0 2 жыл бұрын
Not having the stuff you work on right in front is a show stopper, depending on what you work on, for example programming, reading, and writing intensely. When I had 2 24inch monitor setup, I kept one right in front for the main tasks and the 2nd monitor on the side. Using a 34 inch single monitor now.

Some of these apps through the monitors I’ve seen allow for different size split screen even like one being the full screen and the secondary being top right corner or something and with quick commands being able to switch it. Or have only one show or go back to the split screen

I'd been doing that with multiple 24" monitors for years. Windows on one side, Linux on the other side. I sometimes turn my chair slightly, mostly when using web conferencing or watching videos, or when I can just focus on one machine for a while on a task. Often though, I just sit straight forward, and turn my head slightly because frequent communication (Teams/Outlook) requires me to keep checking on the WIndows machine. When remote work started, I got four monitors. I originally had Windows on the two on the left (bottom and top) with Linux on the right, as that is what I was used to with dual monitors for the previous six years. But then I was finding I was heavily relying on the two bottom monitors. So I switched the inputs and put Windows on the top two monitors and Linux on the bottom two. That's been much better for me because I get to use the Linux workstation more effectively with the two bottom screens. For me it's much more effective to just move my attention to left or right monitor rather than switching between full-screen apps. My upper monitors work well for keeping MS Teams always on top since team communication is expected to be quick responses.

This is an awesome setup. I have a 2020 27" iMac, Windows HP Laptop and a 2015 MacBook Pro laptop that I am trying to use together. I recently purchased the Dell D3100 docking station as well as 2 monitors. I am trying to get all 3 to work seamlessly together using separate monitors but I am having problems trying to figure out what else I need for this setup. Any advice?

Apple is coming out with Universal control this SPRING (2022) It was in Beta and programmers are loving it. You will be able to control multiple devices including iPad that are on the same Network. But check which Operating systems it applies to. I'm extremely excited about the new features.
