I purchased this broken down Briggs and Stratton Storm Responder Generator as a parts machine to fix another I have with a bad stator. Before moving the parts to the other generator, I want to make sure this one has a good stator.

I like the reference to "nuts and shrapnel" - I'm wondering if that could be the next fad in breakfast cereal! Anyway, that engine definitely wants to live. Probably one of the most stable and responsive governors I've heard in a long time. It'll be a nice generator for someone, and not to put too fine a point on it, I find that sometimes, the "scruffy old dog" turns out to be the best and faithful friend.

I bought one of those generators in Dec. of 2008 to satisfy my wife we are never out of power because we live on a main line. Well in Jan of 2009 we had an Ice storm and that thing ran for 14 days straight and never missed a beat. I still have it and it still works great and I care for that thing like it was a baby.

It is a great generator. The only thing you have to watch out for is running low on oil. A lot of them do not have low oil sensors. You keep it filled with oil it should run for many more years.

I overheated my riding lawnmower about a month ago, I thought I seized the motor up because it was pretty low on oil, so when I tore it all apart, I found that the cooling fins for the head unit was completely packed full of insulation. Mice seem to love the live inside of motors. So after some TLC, got a happy running motor again.

I wanted to thank you very much for providing this video - it is the ONLY one that shows how to take apart the 030206 / 550W Briggs & Stratton generator to get the pull start housing off. I started to take the ON/OFF power switch housing off (plastic with 2 X 8mm machine screws and 2 X 12 mm nuts) and then realized that in order to get the pull start / recoil housing off I would have to remove the air filter and carburetor. I didn't trust myself, thinking that no company would be stupid enough to make someone remove the air filter and the carburetor just to get the pull start assembly housing off, but, apparently B & S does exactly that! So, after 90 minutes of searching through useless videos, I finally found your video and voila, you showed me that it is the only way to remove the pull start / recoil housing. Thank you for saving me hours of work! P.S. Can you start one of these generators with an electric drill?

Why such a huge disparity between starting wattage and running wattage on this machine. 8250 down to 5500 is quite a drop! With all the acorns in the engine I wonder what is in the generator and what damage it is doing while you are running it, even for a moment or two? I believe I would pull the bearing cap off and blow it out thoroughly as well as behind the flywheel. I hope you didn't pay the guy a running motor price just because he said it was. I would have demanded he start it or otherwise it would only be worth parts and pretty worn ones at that. Always interesting what you find. Take care.
@jcondon1
@jcondon1 3 жыл бұрын
This one did not cost much. I bought it for the parts, but as it turns out this one ran pretty good. The surge watts are overstated on most. It is a 10HP engine and can only do 5500 watts. The breaker will trip if you go over for more then a few seconds. Would think it could get close to 8250 watts for a second before you stall the engine out or trip the breaker.

@jcondon1
@jcondon1 3 жыл бұрын
If no brushes, then it must be a brushless generator. Those have a large capacitor and diodes on the rotor. Is that what you have? If so, check out the video I did on the Valsi generator. Also have a good one coming out in the next couple months that will cover brushless in a lot more detail. Regardless of the generator type, if you have power on one leg then the rotor has powered up and the stator cannot half power up. Either a leg is bad or you have a wiring issue, bad circuit breaker of maybe a bad outlet.

@melkiorwiseman5234
@melkiorwiseman5234 Жыл бұрын
This is a necro post, but the info may still be of use to someone. What you're describing indicates that the needle being operated by the float is not properly sealing, so fuel is continually running into the bowl instead of only flowing when it's needed. You can see the needle at 14:58 in this video as James removes the float. You can try cleaning the needle and seat GENTLY using alcohol and cotton buds If it's still leaking after that, the easiest solution would be to buy a new carb. While it's possible to replace the needle and seat, it's not something for the inexperienced to tackle without help.

We have a lot of liars out here in the world. People make up a lot of stories, when selling a product. Why can't people just be honest? Am I the only one who has ever noticed that (crooked people, people always trying to do wrong to get ahead, people lie to your face to sell your product) these type of people are always broke and never have anything? They try so hard to get ahead in the wrong way, but they are always broke and never have anything. They usually live in a dump and instead of doing things the right way, they just live like trash and never have anything. It should be a wake up call, that what they are doing is not working. Maybe if they'd start living with a little dignity, things would go better in their life. I just don't understand some people out here.
