I'm the owner if any if you guys have any questions. Little back story on this ...the day before, I finished the car about an hour before we had to leave for Gridlife. Issue was I had been chasing a boost leak which ended up in the damn TPS sensor (first time i'd ever seen such a thing), so RVT to the rescue! It was a 6 hr drive and half way through I realized I'd forgotten my Carbotech pads, which sucked hard as I wanted the car to be a perfect performer. The plan was to swap them before the review as they make a lot of noise, dust, and cold they're not so good on the street. Matt of course was briefed on this before taking the car, so there would be no surprises. It was unfortunate it didn't go entirely as planned, but I loved the fact he was still so enamored by it. This is a street car first and a track car second, however it does get used properly and often. It has seen only 1 track day so far (Road America) and about 4 auto x's since I've owned it. I purchased it bone stock about 2 years ago.

Love him or hate him his reviews are really popular and I was really excited he agreed to do this car. My mom actually told me she thought he was cute, so he's got that going for him. Matt has my dream job, so whether you like him or not, more power to him to actually make some good money doing it. Personally i like his "everyman" approach to car reviews, and i think that's why they're so popular. It's pretty surreal watching this now as I've been watching Matt since the beginning and never thought he'd be sitting in anything I'd ever build.

Hey Matt, I know you said you're done with Subarus, but one day when I finish it it'd be pretty cool if you took a look at my 5 speed wagon. Currently building a "Frankenmotor"-high compression N/A 2.5 with 2.2 ported and polished heads (opinions vary but these heads make for a compression ratio between 11:1 and 13:1), Delta cam regrinds, port-matched intake with phenolic spacers, stainless unequal length header (can't give up the rumble in the name of a small amount of power), lightweight pulley and flywheel, and a standalone ECU. Plus will have some suspension stuff but some will be Subaru OEM from other models (currently installing a '91 Legacy turbo steering rack, 15:1 as opposed to 19:1 for the Outback for ex). This engine was the original EJ25D from the car, but it has a stock EJ22 swap because the 2.5 toasted a rod bearing back in June, which I'm rebuilding on a stand in the garage.
@ParalyzedNight7 жыл бұрын
corvettels9 Good effort, anyone can appreciate somebody else's passion. But that sounds boring. Strap a turbo to it and get some real power, otherwise you're throwing money into an engine that doesn't make much N/A, and like Matt says, will be another boring Subaru
@corvettels97 жыл бұрын
Emil Gorecki Emil Gorecki Yeah, a lot of people say that. I wanted to do something a little different, and if I was going to go turbo I would just WRX swap it. The 2.5 needs a crank (~$300), rods and pistons should be fine, dual-port EJ22 heads are $200 for the pair (the 2.2 I have now has single port heads), cam regrinds are $75/cam plus shipping to Delta, manifold spacers are $75 for the pair, I already have a good header, pulley and flywheel are about $150. The ECU will probably be the most expensive at about $700, but excluding that I can build a stout, quick-revving N/A mill for about $1000. Besides, 2.5D's don't like boost because of the open-deck case halves. Figure it'll make about 160 wheel horsepower (180-190 crank hp), and the wagon only weighs about 3000 lbs. I'm not looking for 500 horsepower, just something that will go, turn, and stop decently well on a budget, and surprise a few people every now and then. I took part in a 5 car race across a 3 mile bridge when the EJ25D was stock apart from the header and an Exedy clutch...a WRX, STi, and a BMW pulled away from me but I did keep a car length and a half on a lifted modified Duramax at over 110 mph with myself and one other person in the car.
@phantommedia99647 жыл бұрын
waiting for a flat 6 swap sti, maybe i'll do that when i have the money ;)
@TheTReed787 жыл бұрын
Dylan, my advice to you, as I have a buddy doing this right now, is to scrap that idea. You're going to be in for so much more money playing with that 2.5 than going the all-motor route with a ez30r or 36r and running it on a standalone Hydra ECU. I actually have two Hydras on hand if you're looking to pick one up, as I am planning on going this route on my wagon. The ez30r which is plentiful on ebay and can be had for about a grand with e85 and bolt ons makes about 300whp with no internal mods to the motor. This setup you're talking about now will cost you about 3-4 times the price and only net you about 200whp on a good day. Just my .02 :)
@corvettels97 жыл бұрын
Tyler Reed My name's Matt and I hear you, although it's definitely not going to cost what you think for my Frankenmotor build. I already have a good block to start with, good pistons and rods, can probably salvage the crank if I bring it to a machine shop, and if I feel like going the single port route I already have EJ22E heads (but I want dual ports). But even the Frankenmotor was never the endgame for the car. When I get bored of it, I'll rip it out, put the Frankenmotor in an old Super Beetle, and put an EG33 in the wagon. Eventually, the EG33 may even receive boost if I feel extra insane.

Awesome video Team TST!!!! Makes me want to figure out how to get my hands on one. It looked like with more brakes that car could be a real track star. It was interested to here a Subaru that never mentioned understeer the entire time. That speaks for itself and to the fact that you can sry an AWD car up to handle properly on a paved race track to all of the haters of anything other than RWD. Don't get me wrong RWD lends itself most to going fast in the dry around a racetrack but again that doesn't mean an AWD car can't be tuned to handle as well if not better.
@TheTReed785 жыл бұрын
swapped the trans to a Prodrive unit with torsion front LSD which helped along with ALK and sways...it was pretty decent, but still understeered like a bitch at low speed auto-x's vs my other bug with v.8 trans and dccd...DCCD is the game changer, no comparision.

Damn Matt! Back at it again with the fresh reviews! Just when I thought I'd never see another STI on this channel, another one pops up. On a somewhat unrelated note: I recently started working at a Subaru dealer, in the maintenance department, and my manager and I were discussing potential plans for the 2020 STI. He swears from higher ups that he's heard it'll get a 3.6L Turbo V6 (notice I said V, not flat) and I hope (and pray) that it'll be a 2.0L Turbo H4 like the modern WRXs, but with more power. What's everyone thoughts on this? I'd be pretty upset if Subaru started jamming V6s into STIs myself. That simply isn't the way of the STI, and I feel as if most owners/enthusiasts would agree. I don't even want a H6, I'm hoping for an H4. The STI is bred for rally, and due to rally regulations most of their engines (even Subaru Rally Team USA) are 2.0L EJ20s. Don't do what Nissan did to the GTR, keep it true to its roots, just make it better.

Just US cast pistons above 400hp, and cylinder walls crack above 500hp. JDM motors come with semi-closed deck blocks and forged pistons, so they handle much more power.
@Crypto_Chino7 жыл бұрын
That's pretty impressive how the JDM 2.0T can hold that much power but the US 2.5T can barely hold 300whp. On a side note, I'm huge VW fan and owned a Golf R which are very impressive with tuning/numbers however always had a soft spot for the STI (Hawkeye, Pig face) but never purchased one cause of them blowing up. I'm glad the JDM STI finally shed some light on me cause I was really bummed the only way you can really make good power was to rebuild the motor.
