Check out this superb piece of driving by Jean Alesi in the awfull F93A Ferrari, at Monza.
In a really crappy car, with a heart as big as the world and moved by the tiffosi, Alesi did the unthinkable, taking the whole track (and even more - see 1:55!) and reaching an unbelievable 3rd place on the grid, only behind the two Williams-Renault.
Enjoy!

Alesi is driving the car so hard that the F93A's dismal active suspension can't produce its calculations fast enough to pitch him off the track.

What is active suspension? And it didn't have the same suspension as the other cars at the time?
@Montreal95
@Montreal95 11 ай бұрын
@@andrewally3570 active suspension is a computer controlled suspension. it was banned at the end of 1993 as part of a move to get rid of all the driver aids. until then anyone who could afford the huge expense developed their own systems(many smaller teams didn't have it because of this reason). And while the Williams system was outstanding and the Mclaren and Benetton systems were quite good, the Ferrari system was just awful in every way and a menace to its drivers safety.

1:57 This illustrates how dangerous it was to ride up the kerbs in an actively-suspended car. If the system happened to take its samples at just the wrong time -when the rate of change of roll, pitch, and/or yaw were at their maximum - the system would make ridiculous adjustments and the driver would likely lose control. Incredible effort by Alesi here to maintain control.

The system was safe on the McLaren and Williams, but the Ferrari system had lots of problems. Mansell in 1992 put virtually the whole car over kerbs, that weren't even meant to be used. Check out his Adelaide qualifying.

An interesting point about Alesi's driving style which many people do not know about. Alesi would carry his neck at a lateral tilt which resulted in him using the sides of the cockpit to support his head ever-so-slightly. This enabled him to get a bit of extra chassis feedback from the flexing of the monocoque. As far as I know, he is the only F1 driver in the modern era who thought to exploit that. Unfortunately, Jean lost this subtle advantage because: a) He damaged vertebrae in his upper spine after a testing accident at Mugello in early 1994 - and the resultant neck stiffness prevented him from carrying his head like that afterwards b) Higher cockpit sides were mandated, anyhow, for 1995 after the terrible Senna and Wendlinger accidents.

The key moment explaining Alesis lack of success in F1 beginns at 2:55. Niki Lauda explaining they had to watch the tv broadcast to learn about the behaviour of the car as alesi couldn't express what's going on. What a pity for this incredible talent.
@Montreal95
@Montreal95 11 ай бұрын
They way his career went it's a chicken and egg case. Yes Alesi was more of a feel driver in the mold of Gilles and never very good at developing a car. But whatever car you gave him you could be sure he'll get 100% out of it, like this godawful 1993 car in which he simply destoyed Berger who simply was too scared of pushing its limits because of the terrible active ride it had. Had he made a better career choice and went to Williams I believe he could be as fast there as Mansell was, who was also a feel driver not good at development. So even without tech acumen a driver with his level of talent could've become World Champion. But since throughout his career he was given only crap cars to drive which needed developing it was never a good fit for a driver of his type and the results predictable.

@@Montreal95that’s true. Berger destroyed Alesi in 94 with a passive F1 car. Berger was a better thinker and helped a lot on the car with his feedback. He was close to Niki and Barnard. On sheer speed Alesi was faster and better in wet conditions. But Berger was a more complete driver. Berger was also in the lat 1/3 of his career while Alesi in the first 1/2 of his. Last but not least Berger had a colossal crash at Imola in 89 and like Piquet back in 1987, he said he never went as fast as before after that. I really like both these drivers. Old school, great fun and so much more natural than what we see these days...

Brings back memories of watching F1 on Eurosport when they had the rights on the old Astra analogue service. The only problem with their F1 coverage was that they would put adverts on the live races, meaning you could miss any crucial moments. I remember one being Damon Hill retiring from his home Silverstone GP in 1993. Before the adverts he was seen challenging for the lead, then when it went back to the live coverage he was seen already retired with the car stopped on the side of the circuit due to a mechanical issue. Apart from that, Eurosport had great coverage & would put on the full three days of a race fixture live starting with Friday practice. Best thing was no subscription was required for this channel.

Jean always gave 110% especialy with a Ferrari under him, even if that car wasn’t up to it, he was! The 93 Ferrari was not their best, and I remember him retiring the car on at least one occasion, due to the poor handling. Ferrari never seemed to get the active ride suspension right, so lost ground to Williams and Benetton. Never stopped Jean having a go though!

It was an awful decent car. Not enough to compete with the Williams. Alesi was unlucky to arrive in Ferrari when Ferrari had got that gap from Williams and Benetton. With a better car, he could win the Championship.
