Has anyone ever experiences the opposite of this? I've had it happen where someone gives me a glowing review of one of their favorite five star reads and every detail they give convinces me more that it isn't the book/series for me. I always feel a bit bad about it, even when it's an online review by a stranger who will never know.

This is such a fun concept I love it! And yes those 1-star reviews definitely bumped The Long Way To A Small Angry Planet up my tbr. I LOVE happy fluffy stories. I honestly believe we need more of it. My friend wrote a short story a while ago with no conflict whatsoever and it made me realize just HOW RARE that is. I think the idea that conflict is essential to a story is such a lie. The story was super engaging and compelling and SO comforting and it still felt purposeful and complete without any conflict and it is one of my favourite pieces of fiction I've ever read. And now I am obsessed with finding more stories that have little to no conflict. This is also one of the reasons I love studio Ghibli for example: a lot of their films have no real antagonist and are just stories about Nice People Being Nice to Each Other, which is how I would characterize a lot of my favourite stories.

I’m swayed to read things by 1 or 2 star reviews a lot! When I see words like “weird” and “confusing” I immediately add the book to my TBR! On the other hand, seeing glowing reviews that mention “detailed world building” and “complex magic system” I can usually assume that a book won’t be to my taste. There are usually modifiers that can negate those things and still make me pick something up but they make me cautious. Also, those reviews totally made me want to reread Tipping the Velvet again!

I finally found a one star review that makes me want to read a book and I have to share it here. It's "Green Rider" by Kristen Britain: "If magic horses and riders aren't enough for the tired old the-throne-is-threatened-oh-no-must-save-it! trope, add bad elves, ancient magics, rich men who mysteriously fall for the heroine, shadowy bad guys, Disney-esque old ladies in isolated magical mansions and too-helpful ghosts to the mix." I honestly think this sound like so much fun xD

This exact same thing happened to me with "An Enchantment of Ravens" by Margaret Rogerson. I can't find the exact Goodreads review but I remember vividly that the commentator complained about the relationship "almost feeling like INSTALOVE!?!" and that "noone told them this would be a TRAVELLING(!) book". I was sold. I love travelling and falling head over heels in my fantasy books and "An Enchantment of Ravens" did not disappoint, it was a five star read for me. Hearing all these one star reviews for Becky Chambers' "The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet" has actually motivated me to finally pick up the book. It's been sitting on my shelf for ages but I was afraid it might be full of angst and "morally gray" characters that get praised so often. Happy people hugging in space? Yes please. Some reviewers make me really wonder who hurt them.

I once read a one star review of The Queen of theTearling that was a clearly aimed at entertaining. I remember wondering why the reviewer thought it was totally implausible that a bunch of guards would get drunk while they were supposed to be guarding “the queen” and cause a whole bunch of problems. I ended reading the entire trilogy, although that was more because I wondered at the difference between that review and when RinceyReads reviewed it. If I had not seen that review I don’t think I would have read it. The last book has its issues, but thank you one star review!

i loved this! I was laughing so hard at the reviews for Small Angry Planet. (I read it, I loved it. Whenever I tried to convince other people to read it too I'd say something like "nothing really happens in the book but it doesn't matter, that's not the point of the book".) I can't think of any specific bad reviews that sold me on a book, but it's definitely happened. And recently I've been all about paying attention to three star ratings because often I find myself shocked that a book I discovered, read, and loved without checking the reviews beforehand, end up having three stars (overall, not specific reviews). Here's my theory on them - it means that there was something odd, quirky, different, or daring in the book that half the people loved and half did not. (Of course it could also mean that the characters or plot weren't fully developed or the writing wasn't great.) Speaking of humorous reviews, have you seen these? instagram.com/subparparks/?hl=en

@@JeansThoughts I started with the Liveship Traders not realising the Farseer books “came first”, and then read those immediately after. I love ALL of the series so much, buuut I think maybe you might prefer Liveship Traders as a starting point? It’s multiple perspective like Dragon Keeper, there are so many interesting and complex female characters, the character development is SO good (and there are also a few romance subplots in there) (TW for sexual assault in the 3rd book, I think RH handles it well, but just a heads up) This was a ramble but I hope it helps, I think RH is at her best when she can really take her time with a story, so I think something shorter like Piebald Prince doesn’t do her storytelling justice. I’ve been rereading the entire series the last few months and really can’t recommend them enough ☺️🧡

I do get people not liking certain genres, I struggle with fantasy mostly, but it seems a bit churlish to complain about that in a review. I mean books nowadays are clearly signposted as being in specific genres through online bookshops and websites like Goodreads. I really liked Tipping the Velvet, and I have fond memories of borrowing the audiobook on cassette from the library (only about 8 years ago) and listening to it quite a few times. Although there's a section in Tipping the Velvet that I find so unspeakably sad that I struggle to get through that point. I think my top two favourite Sarah Waters books are Affinity and Fingersmith.

This is such a good idea! I once read a review about a Deadman comic that said: the comic is "Crimson Peak (as in the gothic Guillermo del Toro film) with gender politics." Sounds good to me! Crimson Peak is one of my favourite films and I'm down for gender politics. Funnily enough Crimson Peak has what can be called "gender politics" it's a female centric film, with a main character who openly shows frustration towards restricting gender roles of her time. In the review, I think the gender politics was about the queer representation in the comic, the main character is bisexual and one of the characters is non-binary. People who are (willfuly) ignorant about feminism and the LGBTQIA community often conflate and mix-up the two.

I noticed reviews like that for Long Way to a Small and Angry Planet. Some people are so threatened by the existence of happy, optimistic sci-fi especially if it has representation of groups, sexualities etc they don't belong to. It's sad, isn't reading science fiction supposed to be about (among other things) being open minded to new ideas? Also the book, and especially the sequel does absolutely get into the darker sides of AIs and sentience. A story doesn't have to be grimdark to have depth and explore issues.

A two-star review on amazon brought me to "Unnatural Magic" by C.M. Waggonner. It's not a perfect book, but it's somewhere between good and okay and I had fun reading it. I'll probably read it again once its been a year or so. Here's the original comment: "This was not your typical fantasy, I grant it that much, but the author's reach far exceeded their grasp in this mislabeled gender studies unit taking a stroll in high fantasy duds. I'm down with any gender POV or alien POV or whatever you've got, but it has to be anchored in a coherent plot and a consistent world and this book had neither. There was a mashup of two separate stories that never quite cohered, a "detective story" that was wholly unsatisfying and characters whose motivations were entirely alien, as absolutely no words were spent explaining the mores of this weird and gender-fluid world. Something has to connect the reader to the story, some exposition or illumination of the world in a setup or reveal that explains why these characters act the way they do, otherwise you have no compass to follow in deciphering their actions. Was two of the protagonists being romantically involved considered transgressive? It seemed like it should be, but since the reader had no sense of what the norms of this society were, there's no way to tell what was transgressive and what was not, and thus almost no suspense or impact for me. The role of the Trolls as being both revered and reviled was also nonsensical, and varied so greatly from locale to locale without explanation that I was thinking this was some pre-holocaust fantasy writing with Trolls cast as prewar Polish Jews (and homosexuals, and The Other), but again if that was the main point, the exposition came up far too short for me to get a handle on it. I left the book about 80% finished after the several-th time the characters and populace did something completely baffling to me in light of what I thought I'd learned about this world in the previous couple dozen chapters. Please, change my mind if you can." The worldbuilding isn't perfect and yeah there are a lot of questions, but I liked the fact that the book stepped away from at least some of the writing conventions you usually see and I wasn't quite sure how the story would go. Its a good book for some mindless reading a wholesome bi-trans(?) relationship and a coming of age and empowerment of a girl whose society thinks girls shouldn't do magic. The coolest thing about this book is its magic system. It sits somewhere between programming, mathematics and using complicated softwares, and the stuff you can do with it are wonderful and feel surprisingly grounded. The person who did the 2-star review isn't wrong though, if anything in there is a complete turn off for you, then don't read this book. I picked it up because I was curious and because I knew I probably wouldn't really mind once I was reading.

I love it when homophobic reviews backfire. :D I was reading reviews the other day for a book I didn't even realize had LGBT+ rep in it until I came across someone calling it "perverse" for having a gay character. Alright then, that's moving up the TBR... (or it would be if I could currently remember which book it was 😬🤦‍♀️)
