The issue is LAX and Finnair doesn't want to spend extra money to make it decent. Vast majority of LAX departing long haul flights have lousy food - in fact, probably the worst in the world. I have traveled extensively and LAX is my long-haul home base and I have never seen or eaten any airline food that's worse than LAX's catering.
@Originalman1442 жыл бұрын
@@_w_w_ Yep. LA has high food cost, high labor cost, high transport cost, high tax -- there's really no way around those things for the airlines -- so all of this cost-cutting is felt in the low quality of the meals.
@schumi2462 жыл бұрын
Food on outbound flights tend to be better, than on flights back to an airlines base. For example, I flew KLM from Amsterdam, down to Kilimanjaro, and back about 10 days later. The food on the way down was better. I’ve also flown United from DEN-LHR and back as well, and it was true then, too.
@afcgeo8822 жыл бұрын
@@schumi246 This is true of all airlines. The simple reason is that every airline designs its own menu, so at its home base, the catering company makes A LOT of those dishes, for all of those flights out of the base. That makes it cheaper, more consistent, and with the exact brand ingredients it was designed to have. At away airports all around the world the local caterers have to use local ingredients and only make the food for one or two flights a day (of that airline). They lack the experience, the economies of scale drive the prices up, and the local brands/ingredients don’t work as well together.
@_w_w_2 жыл бұрын
@@schumi246 It's not outbound or inbound. It's where the food is catered. US-catered food in general is pretty bad. The ONLY airport I think otherwise is Seattle. LAX is THE worst. United's catering out of SFO, IAH and EWR are super lousy, but on the return leg catered by the out-station's caterers, the food is 100% better. This is the most obvious when the flights leave Japan, Taiwan or France. The difference in meal quality and presentation is shockingly noticeable, even in economy. The sad thing is that flighst departing China, catered in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen are even better than the US. They actually hire foreign chefs in China from top schools and restaurants... If you can disconnect the culture aspect of a cuisine and just look at ingredient, taste and execution, even the Chinese caters are better than the Americans.

Did this same flight in 1A and loved every minute of it. The only disappointment was the solid undercast preventing me from seeing Jan Mayen - which the friendly crew told me when we'd be passing, so I could plan my sleep accordingly. I've watched this flight on FlightRadar24 and seen it turn right out of LAX then not turn again until 10-mile final into Helsinki. 5,000-mile right base :) I love Finnair (which is just as well, given that I live in the north of Finland). I've always found the service on board to be attentive but with that wonderful Finnish quality of not bothering you when it isn't necessary. Whether it's turning round from staring out the window on arrival and finding my coat retrieved from the locker and folded neatly on the seat beside me, or collapsing into my seat after a sweltering run the entire length of HEL and having an FA bring a glass of water before I could even fasten my belt, they somehow manage to hit that sweet spot between invisible and fawning, every time.

I've always liked Finnair. My best memory was when I was on one of my first trips to Europe and returning to Helsinki from Münich. We had a connecting flight leaving from Charles de Gaulle and our flight was not only late but we had to through a very rude and slow security check there. We were running really late, actually running to the gate, panting and sweating. Then the Finnair flight attendant welcomed us young, lost and exhausted lads with the warmest of smiles and said "you don't have to hurry anymore, we'll take you home". Those were just the right words and just awesome customer service.

Jeb, I'm sorry I'm just seeing this video now. I can not agree with you more. I flew Finnair for the first time last summer in business, HEL-LAX on the A350. Absolute best flying experience I ever had. Myself and several other pax arrived very delayed into HEL from FRA and the gate agents could not have been more pleasant, accommodating, and calming after many of us ran 20 minutes through the airport. They were waiting for us and weren't going to leave without us. The onboard experience was just as fantastic. I agree their drinking glasses are amazing, but I'm disappointed it doesn't seem you had their signature blueberry juice. It was delicious. That's all I drank the whole flight and I wanted to buy some to take home. Finnair is most definitely my new favorite and preferred airline for travel to Europe. Unfortunately, their schedule didn't work with mine this summer. I really hope their financial situation improves so I can fly with them again in the future.

Great video Jeb! I usually combine trips from Europe to the west coast with mileage/status runs, so I include a stop on the east coast on the way back. I've only had one short trip on Finnair, from LHR to HEL, but it was operated by their long-haul aircraft - an A350 out (coincidentally the same aircraft you flew on - but I was in 8A!) and an A330 back. The food was okay for a short flight, but the service was great and the seat comfortable. I'll definitely consider them for a transatlantic leg in future.

In the coming summer season Finnair has increased widebody service on SH routes. LHR gets A350 twice daily, all AMS flights are operated by A350. They opened a new long haul base in Stockholm but seems still extra capacity left, their important markets in Japan and China being mostly closed now.

Hi Jeb, welcome to the AY Club. I've flown them probably half-a-dozen times and, as an avid one-world supporter, they are one of my favourite LH airlines. There are a couple of reasons for this: 1. Their Business Class fares are usually quite reasonable - from Australia they tend to have decent RTW J prices towards Oct-Nov of each year 2. Their connections at HEL are great - usually can be as short as 55mins - and even if longer their Platinum-status Lounge in the non-Schengen transit zone is excellent. Also, their food offerings - while not quite as "exotic" as the days when they would serve reindeer - remain quite nordic. Given the general Finnish love of seafood - and the representation of that onboard - you may have to look for a new favourite long-haul for your shellfish issue!! Just joking, but I think you struck a little unlucky in that you were flying to Helsinki. AY seem to offer greater food choices ex HEL and they currently only appear to offer the ability to pre-book a J meal ex-HEL although you always have the special diet options available. Lastly, I was surprised at your description of the crew. I found them to be a little cool to start off with but are great at being able to size their customers and generally will thaw as the flight progresses. Again, welcome to one of the best-kept secrets: AY Long Haul Business Class!

I am Swedish-American, and in my experience, in any of the five Scandinavian countries the largest (and longest) meal of the day is most often Breakfast. And it is usually set out as a Smorgasbord, even in my families home. Lunch is the second largest meal, then "Feeka" (afternoon coffee, similar to English 'High Tea'), making dinner or supper the smallest meal (unless one is going out). The first time my cousin served us a couple of thin pancakes for supper I was a little shocked, as well as starving until morning. But not as shocked as my cousin was when she visited us in the US and we took her out to her first dinner here. She couldn't eat much of it, and after that she ate very little lunch so she could more easily stomach a bigger dinner so as not to embarrass herself (very important to Swedes).

They are dual nationals so there were many of these trips to see family. I chose non-stop flights back in those days because I figured breaking up the flight into two shorter stretches would make the overall trip longer with young ones. I flew a lot of different airlines over the years. I loved my FinnAir flight (awesome airline!) but my best experience was one KLM flight when the attendants offered to play with my then two-year-old from time to time. Still waiting to get on a A350. Was hoping to book one for my upcoming summer trip. No luck.. Flying the A340-600 instead (Lufthansa) Glad you had a nice experience on that 350 👍🏼

No luck? You are extremely lucky with getting the very rare Airbus A340-600!

Hi Jeb, you’re the first host I’ve heard also with a fish allergy. Sometimes dining is really disappointing because I can’t eat most of it. I Iived in W-S 25 years so cheers from Buenos Aires. And it’s 10 hours from the USA, so I understand how kong your flight was!

Man Jeb, you’ve got the coolest job in the world, I need to know how you did it. My dream is to do exactly what you do. So awesome.

I live in LA so Lax to Europe is my usual experience. I always looked forward traveling on the A380, it was the most comfortable way to fly to Europe for me.

That Batman though…I’ve also caught a glimpse of a Grand Seiko in another of your videos. Great taste!

Longer flights, definitely! I fly with Etihad a lot, and when they flew to LAX, it would be a 16-hour flight. When we got business class, not only can you enjoy it, but you can also see two sunsets! Also, can you review their business class? I haven't flown them since the pandemic started, and I would love it if you can review them!

I love the longer flights to Europe. I love flying so the more time I can spend on the plane the better ☺️.

My favorite part of Jeb's videos is the little wristwatch shot Easter egg in each video. This trip it was the Batman. I noticed you got a VC Overseas Everest in your last Amtrak video. Banger watches and aviation content? Love your videos, man!

Nice report, Jeb. I'm shocked this was your first time flying out of TBT because you're such a well-travelled man.

Glass name is Ultima Thule. It was created by Finnish designer, Tapio Wirkkala in 1968. I use these every day - one next to me atm.. Finnair started to use Ultima Thule in 1969.
