@@davidwright1653 i never understood this dumb ass mentality of "hurrr durrrrr she's got a man, you can't talk to her! A hurrrrrr!" I had a random woman I've never seen before pop in at work the other day, and being as how this is a secure building i went over and said hi, asked who she was. She's an older hire to run the vacs on the floors on the off shifts, and I'd never seen her before since she'd been gone since COVID, and i started here after all that. Third shift laser guy comes in to take over my machines the next day and he's telling me one of the press guys is all pissed and wants to fight me cause that's his wife. He was actually goin around askin people all pissed off "who just goes up to a woman and talks to her!? That's another man's wife, you can't just talk to another man's wife!" Like she's not even her own person, just his property. Of course he couldn't get anyone to agree with him, and now every time i see her i chat her up a couple minutes before goin back to work. I dunno, I'm married, I'm not interested in anyone else anyhow, but this whole, "women can't make their own decisions if they have a man" thing is just stupid

Same here. I had a 89 Chrysler New Yorker one time that the transmission went out while still under warranty. They replaced the transmission and of coarse it also went out later after the warranty had expired. I had it repaired at a transmission shop and then while on a trip about 800 miles from home, the car left me stranded with the transmission failed again. I had to rent a car to finish my trip and then return to the shop where they repaired the transmission and drove it back home. I quickly sold that thing before it failed again. I have never owned a Chrysler product since and and will not have one in the future.

As usual, brilliant, efficient diagnostics. Some would say that crimp and solder is belt and suspenders, but I like both, too. I wonder if it would work better to tin before crimping, but time constraints have to be considered, too. Who knows, the belt and suspenders I wear every day may come into fashion, ha ha.
@markh.6687
@markh.6687 2 жыл бұрын
Crimping was intended to do away with soldering. So long as the crimp is mechanically correct it's perfectly fine not to solder. In fact, only a mechanically strong connection should be soldered. A weak mechanical connection isn't fixed by soldering, and is defective no matter how much solder is applied.
@Fix_It_Again_Tony
@Fix_It_Again_Tony 2 жыл бұрын
When a wire is soldered it loses its flexibility. What happens is the part that is still flexible flexes, but where the solder has wicked into the strands it cant flex. This causes the copper to fatigue at the end of the solder joint. Eventually the wire will break. This can be prevented with mechanical strain relief. In this case some adhesive lined shrink tube works well because it is more rigid than unlined shrink tube and seals out water. However, the other commenters are correct. A proper crimp does not need to be soldered. What you saw Eric do is use a tool not designed from crimping that sized lug. He made it work, because that is what a good mechanic does. Orienting the wires upward was the first mistake Jeep made here. The ground gets wet and water sits in the crimp joint and capillary action plus gravity carries it in between the strands. Jeep could have prevented this by sealing the crimp with a product like the ones used to protect battery terminals. CRC makes a good one. However that costs a cent or two more per harness so they decided not to do it because they would prefer you come back and buy a new car ever 5-7 years or so. Eric chose to do the repair the way he wanted to because it's his shop. The repair will probably last until the Jeep rusts away, but generally speaking you shouldn't solder crimped terminals. This is especially true in a high vibration environment like a vehicle.
@RobertHancock1
@RobertHancock1 2 жыл бұрын
@@Fix_It_Again_Tony Probably the solder is not really making it into the wire inside or before the crimp here. I think the idea is more to seal the connection and prevent water from getting in and corroding the connection.
@Fix_It_Again_Tony
@Fix_It_Again_Tony 2 жыл бұрын
@@RobertHancock1 I guess it is impossible to know without doing a longitudinal cross section of the joint, however, solder generally flows anywhere it is hot enough. Soldering depends on capillary action to draw the molten solder into a joint, or to create fillets on surface mount parts. I don't see how the heat can be controlled so precisely with a butane torch in such a small area. If this was a gas tight crimp made with the proper die at the correct pressure I might agree with you. In that case the lack of space between the strands and the crimp barrel of the terminals wouldn't allow solder to flow into the crimp. A properly done crimp will actually cause cold welds to form between the strands and between the wire and terminal. A lot of this discussion is academic and the repair that works is the correct repair, but generally it is not recommenced to solder a crimped terminal and it actually decreases the mechanical reliability of the crimp (particularly in high vibration environments found in vehicles and especially without strain relief - both conditions are found in the video) and doesn't off any electrical benefit.

Found every body/frame/engine ground on my 98 Jeep Wrangler and cleaned or replaced them contacts coated with either Fluid Film or dielectric grease. I’ve gotten into the habit of using battery terminal protector on grounds (or spray glyptol) - about once a year for the terminal protector, can go several years on the glyptol since it’s technically a varnish. I was going to say @0:20, we probably have a bad ground. I bet Eric is going to check the powers and the grounds. When I went to reply, the description gave it away. Anyway, let's keep watching because we are really here for the commentary.

I noticed the other day that Harbor Freight is now selling Power Probes. The fancy version no less. Yep, chop and re-terminate. Then Robert is your father's brother.... I was thinking about mentioning the crimping technique, but the solder made me feel better. Not that the crimping job with a tad of grease would most probably well outlive your basic rusting car here in salty NY. Too bad the manufacturers don't care as much as SMA, a tad of grease would go along ways toward preventing such problems. Carry on, and thanks for the vijeo!

Thank you so much for the video, I just got done cleaning and reconnecting with new eye-connectors the ground wires and it solved the problem.

"Do I look more intelligent?" It's the reversal of when the wife asks "How do I look?". Except while we have trouble answering that tactfully, Mrs. O is smart enough to just say nothing. Beauty + Brains. And then "...I don't use 'em on camera because they're embarrassing." Vanity, thy name is Eric...

That’s where experience counts. You can just eliminate everything else right off the bat test and repair. And Eric you are the luckiest guy, Mrs O is awesome.
