Just wanted to give you guys an update. I have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the dreaded 3.6L Penstar engine. I started to experience the "ticking" sound a number of months ago and thought it was due to low oil level but after correcting the oil level the problem persisted. I did a lot of research and came across this video. After watching it about 4 times, I decided this was something I could do myself. I called a number of dealership before I started the work to get some quotes. Each one of them told me $5000, 14 hours of labor at $200/hr. $5,000 for this job?! You can purchase and entire use engine for half that! So, I started working on it myself. Upon removing the valve covers, I began to understand the level of damage that bad rocker arms can cause an engine, particularly this Penstar engine. Only 4 or 5 rocker arms were bad but each one had cause damage on all the camshafts. So, after ordering $1400 worth of Mopar parts, I had all new camshafts and all new rocker arms. I installed them per your instructions and when all was said and done turned the car over to hear whether I was successful. I was horrified to hear that that problem was still there. Did I do something wrong? I couldn't have. I followed all the instructions to the letter. Yes, the ticking sound was still there. I drove it around the block and had no inclination that there was anything assembled incorrectly and decided after doing so to take it for a longer ride. When I got back home after an hour ride, I was amazed and delighted to hear the "ticking" sound was COMPLETELY gone and the engine sounded normal again. Thank you sir for an EPIC tutorial and thank you for helping me save $3500! It was an enjoyable experience all the way around. *** NOTES: You can also put a small allen wrench or wire in the top hole of the drivers side chain tensioner to keep it locked in place without having to use the black tool. Also, the 13mm bracket on the drivers side that attached the rear bracket on the air intake underneath has a metal clip on the bolt. To remove it to get at the 13mm bolt, simply work it away from the bolt. It is wrapped around an a/c line but it is not welded. It will twist away from the bolt with some pressure. Other than that, the video was a gift. Stronger recommended! Thank you my friend!!!!!!

Thanks to this video I was able to replace my bank 1 intake camshaft, 2 rockers, and 2 lifters! I ran into a few issues removing the valve cover due to three areas of obstruction. The timing tool kit I bought didn't fit at all, so I did the job without the special tools. My Jeep is a 2018 and my intake camshaft components are also the updated version. The Amazon rocker arms I bought were also different in dimension; rollers were smaller than the OEM. I was lucky that my exhaust rocker arms were all still good. I replaced all lifters on the exhaust side because I found 3 that were failing. On the intake side I only replaced 2 rocker arms and the lifters. Thank you for the video. It was well edited and explained. The breaks also gives you a sense of when it's time for a break during the real job.

EXTREMELY HELPFUL!!! Thank you. My 2015 Grande Cherokee (130,000 mi) repair will be done by an experienced tech as this is in NOOOOOOOOOO manner any of my expertise. I'm amazed at how complicated the initial removal task is and can truly appreciate the effort necessary. This video helps me, the customer, understand why the repair could take a few days in a busy shop regardless if the manual stating the estimated time for a tech. I'm happy to rearrange my schedule to offer as much time as necessary so this repair is done correctly and not rushed. I know how frustrating assembling a flat pack furniture item can be for me. I don't wish that on a mechanic at all. 😊😊😊

Adding my name to the list of satisfied customers. Thank you so much for laying this all out in such detail. This was maybe my first work under the hood and it was a bit daunting. I did the work over three days, and having the video to refer back to was invaluable. My forearms and stomach were getting sore and bruised, and I ended up folding a moving blanket and laying it on the edge of the engine compartment. Made things much more comfortable. Starting it up again and hearing no ticking was such a relief. Thank you so much.

You’re awesome. I just did an engine clean with ATS oil system cleaner and changed the oil right after. Before this, the car was very quiet on idle, after the clean and oil change, the car started ticking just like seen in your video. Not entirely sure how a cleaner and oil change might have caused it but I now know the rocker arm is bad. This repair seem intimidating, I don’t have nearly half of the tools you used, but I will give it a shot. Thank you so much for the thorough explanation of everything.

I also replaced both cam positioning sensors, I’m noticing smoother acceleration now. All in all this video helped me tremendously.

Did this job on my buddies 2012 Cherokee today. I would like to add that the PCV on the passenger side rear must come out, and even with that the valve cover is a bear to get off with the AT dipstick right there. Loosen the bracket behind the cover and swing over towards the center of the engine and the cover will cear. Also, of major importance, after everything was installed, i spun the engine over by hand and for what ever reason, the tensioner on the drivers side, the little saw tooth lock bit did not fully extend, this lead to the chain jumping 2 teeth. After some pondering I figured it out and got the cam aligned. 2 rockers on the passenger side were bad, one was just starting to graze the cam lobe. This video was tremendously helpful. Also, the job took me roughly 8 hours at a steady pace including the hiccups along the way. cheers!

Thanks Robert!! I'm a decent weekend mechanic but this repair seemed a bit intimidating. My GC (80k miles) had a slight tick, no codes and ran fine. Decided to give this repair a go thanks to your awesome instructions. Ended up having one bad rocker which already started cutting the cam. Replaced all the rockers and lifters with Melling brand. Replaced the damaged cam with OEM Mopar. While everything was apart I did the plugs and PCV valve too. Firing it back up after finishing the job was a scary moment but all good and no more tick! Folks, if you hear a tick, tick, tick you need to get it addressed. Mine had only a slight tick on the passenger side and internal damage was already occurring.

Very helpful Robert! I'm not a mechanic, but I'm having this done to my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited next week (75K miles). Now I understand what the issue is. In my case I just started getting the P0304 misfire code. No ticking noise that I can hear (I have bad hearing), it drives fine but shakes a little in idle. One mechanic said I needed plugs/coils (that didn't work), then a valve job, a second mechanic said rocker arm/camshaft job. After watching your video, I can see how this makes more sense; meaning a bad rocker causing a misfire. That second mechanic said he's seen this a hundred times. I'm retired, so getting another few more years out of the Jeep would be great.

@@linneadarby6925 The rocker arm job was supposed to be around $3K, but the final price was around $3900 because when they checked out the rocker arms, they were fine, but they found a crack in the head on that side of the motor (revealed by pressure test). The mechanic told me he buys a head "kit" that has all new gaskets and rockers, so that side of my motor is all new now. lol Honestly, I don't have a lot of miles on the jeep, and it was WAY less than buying a new car. I just wish I took my car to the second guy first; they charged me $1200 just to tell me it couldn't be fixed.

Great Video! I am tacking a similar thing because the timing chain guide and a tensioner broke into multiple pieces. i have a 2013 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and after i replaced the timing chain thinking it would fix the codes, i am still getting codes P000A, P000B, P000C and P000D. I am also getting P00016 Through P00019. I Noticed your magnets on the back of the cam shaft had some silver colored streaks. Mine all have the same thing and when i wiped them off with a soft cloth i was able to pick the cloth up with a magnet! So obviously these were metal shavings. Is that why you have to replace the cam shaft, or were you able to simply clean them up. I noticed you only replaced 1 and not the other 3. Thanks again for the video

Question, I have a 2012 dodge challenger same pentastar motor, I'm doing the same thing but only on the right side (passenger side) when turning the crank like you did to line up the lines on the timing Actuators and timing chain and mark them. Would my pentastar motor be the same as what you did to line them up? I only have to replace the head gasket on right side ( passenger). Would I line up the same lines as you did on the right side? I have seen other videos done on the left side and as you said people are lining up the Arrows on left side. I really need to know this, before I try this job. Right side Actuators line line up? Not arrows for the right side? Thank you for any help.

Thank you Robert - you are a champion. I did this job for my 2014 Grand Cherokee RHS bank 3 years back but wasn’t aware of the special tool for timing chain. It was a nightmare and could only swap 10 arms and 7 lifters. Didn’t know to crank engine only before firing up so when I did bunch of error codes and lights. Thought I’d stuffed it all. When my LHS started the dreaded tick recently PTSD kicked in and I was calling the Jeep mechanics. $3,500-$4,000 and 2 weeks! A joke. So I manned up and then coming across your tutorial filled in the missing gaps and just finished. All perfect. Is it always the exhaust rocker towards the front that goes? It’s often cited a manufacturing fault in the rocker arm, however to me I think the issue must be the load from exhaust cam/location valve head that causes them to fail. Otherwise not every engine would go (eventually). The downside to that is that even after replacing them once it would imply it will tick again eventually in the future. Might keep my plastic tool.

@ValleyMobileAutomotive
@ValleyMobileAutomotive Жыл бұрын
Good question. There are a couple things under the hood that make ticking noises. The injectors like you said. There are a lot of them and they all sound the same. The purge solenoid will begin to tick once activated. It sits on top by the intake air duct. You can unplug it to eliminate that noise. A rocker will be a little louder than the injectors and a bit more metallic and deeper sounding than an injector. Hope that helps.

Most of these ticking comes from people prolonging their oil and filter changes at 10k miles or doing it at all. If these engines are well maintained, they last an awfully long time as i have experienced. I changed my oil every 4k miles and i never had the tick and i had 250k miles on my 2012 Dgc. I beat hard on it bc it was an Uber taxi, up here on the streets of Toronto and trust me, with all the salt used up here, it causes a lot of potholes. Likewise, i have seen many people who had these engines well maintained and they had very high mileage on them. By contrast, those people who changed the oil and filter by 10 k miles on average or more, had these ticks as early as 20k miles. I have seen these engines tick early even if they are well maimtained about 1 to 2% of the time and just remember, Chrysler has made more than 11 million of these engines and that is why they seem to be a common issue. 1 to 2% out of 11 million engines is 110k to 220k engines that are downright problematic for these pentastar engines. It seems a lot but really it is not.

I have a 2019 wk2 with the 3.6 and only just crossed 30k miles. I have a ticking sound that follows the rpms of the engine. I've tried taking it to the dealer but they said they can't do anything since it hasn't thrown a code, which from what I've seen, doesn't happen until there's nearly catastrophic damage to the cam. Sounds like bs to me. Good thing there's awesome people like you showing us how to do it ourselves!

Yikes! Is it still under your power train warranty? As you know not all engine problems will set a code. They're just giving you the runaround. Sometimes contacting the manufacturer directly with your concern can yield better results.

@@ValleyMobileAutomotive Yea the tapping is not incredibly loud, but when the engine is cold and you roll the window down it is clearly audible in the lower 1500-3000rpm range before wind/other noise drown it out. The only thing is that is gets quieter when the engine is at temp and the general noise of the car drowns it out. I told the dealer this and suggested letting the engine cool down to hear it better. So I left them with the vehicle expecting to hear back later or the next day. Nope. Not even 20 minutes after I left, they called me and said they couldn't hear anything and to come pick up my vehicle. I ended up reviewing dashcam footage, and the tech proceeded to take the vehicle right out after I left and floor it down the road and back to the shop. Didn't even bother to open the hood. Sounds like a phone call might be the way to go with it being under warranty.

Coming on with my recent experience with my 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6 that’s currently being fixed by the dealership. Not even 3 years old went for your typical oil change on May 10th at the dealership and by Friday my truck was smoking from a blown head gasket, cam shaft seal replacement and bad cylinder, coolant was in the engine from the fail/faulty part. I opened a case with Jeep and the end result is they will be footing 75% of the bill to fix it and their diagnosis result was a failed faulty part…..take a guess what that part was. Total repair cost $4,400 and I was out of the warranty period because my mileage was around 80k, but the open case with Jeep helped me with the cost down. I was told to get rid of the truck, because it may happen again since the 3.6 is know for that issue, but I love my truck. I’m just glad to get it fixed and back on the road again. FYI, my truck never ran hot and it had a slight ticking noise, but it never smoked or had any issues prior to the oil change on May 10th that was a big cause for concern. Also, I had new Mopar Spark Plugs put in early April. I’m still wondering what I could have looked out for prior to this happening, but I never would have thought this would have happened with a vehicle I purchased brand new from the dealership.

Thanks for the great video! I do have a question. I have a ticking and a misfire on the passenger side (P05). I'm sure I'll find a bad rocker arm. But if the bad follower wore down the outside edges of the cam lobe I'm thinking that won't affect things as the new rocker arm roller will ride on the undamaged part of the cam shaft lobe and not the outside of the scored cam....I think? I'm just trying to save buying a camshaft.
@ValleyMobileAutomotive
@ValleyMobileAutomotive 4 ай бұрын
I understand wanting to save money. When the roller follower fails it stops rolling. Most of the damage to the cam is on the outside of the lobe but there is damage to the whole lobe. As the cam rides on the broken roller it wears metal away from the tip and "flattens" the lobe. This will affect how the valve opens and closes. My advice is to bite the bullet and cry once instead of tearing it back apart down the road.
@dk3323
@dk3323 3 ай бұрын
@@ValleyMobileAutomotive You are right....of course! The intake rocker arm on #5 had quite a bit of vertical play, but the roller was still working and is higher than the shoulder, and no apparent damage to the lobe. BUT when I got to #6 on the left side, one rocker arm had some vertical play but the other one was seized and the cam lobe was destroyed. The center of the lobe was ground down with sharp ridges. #6 had thrown a P06 a couple thousand miles ago and didn't reappear after clearing it. I have 24 Melling rockers and lifters arriving tomorrow morning along with the left side intake camshaft. THANK YOU for all the information and giving me the confidence to do this job. @ValleyMobileAutomotive
@ValleyMobileAutomotive Жыл бұрын
The worse case scenario is the chain skipped a tooth on the crank if there was too much slack in the chain. But if everything is lined back up in its original place then you might be ok. When you have the cam all back on and the phaser bolts tight turn the crankshaft two full revolutions then recheck cam timing. If it all lines up you're good to go. If you have any questions feel free to post them 👍

The only difference is when i went to perfom the step at 20:10, the wrench pressure was applied and wrench moved 3 violent clicks. Tool went in and nothing appeared upset, so proceeded. Finished putting back together. When i hit the start button for the first time, the engine would turn over very, very quietly, almost like it was just the starter turning. Checked front while had someone hit start, and indeed everything was turning, but no attepmt to start at all. Just very smooth turn over. Almost like no compression at all... What could have those 3 clunks have been that may have damaged something to cause this issues. Could really use your help in piinying me in the right direction. Do you a way i could conact you for a quick chat? Thank you

@ValleyMobileAutomotive Very much appreciate you taking the time to reply. Yes. Everything went back together fine. All timing marks lined up, arrows and lines on phasers, dots on cams and phaser flanges. Original issue had the tick, replaced all 24 rockers and lifters with Mopar parts. Had 1 bad Rocker arm, cams are good. I have pulled it back down again to check everything, which seems perfect.... As mentioned, Everything went just as you did in your video identically step by step. That one issue was the only thing different. When the wrench was applied to cam it made 3 pops and moved. The sound it made was like the plastic teeth on special tool holding block had give way, but block tool and teeth were perfectly intact.. clueless at this point and fear putting all back together for same result. Any help is much appreciated. Thank you

There is no trick. Putting your foot on the gas and brake at the same time turns off the injectors. Once you take your foot off the gas and start it normally it will turn back on the injectors automatically and start right up. If your car is not starting normally then something else is the cause.

Hey Dominic, good question. These are hydraulic lifters that look like bullets. A pretty stout design. A failing lifter will make a rattle/ticking noise on a cold start up then go away after 2-3 seconds. To check them you squeeze the lifter with your finger. If you can collapse it then it's bad. If it holds firm it's good. If you like you can replace them since you are in there but I haven't come across a bad lifter yet.

A cracked camshaft tone ring has the potential to cause issues down the line. You would need to be willing to pull it back apart if it causes a problem. The camshaft moving isn't an issue as long as the phaser is still locked with the dowel pin and the chain is still lined up 👍
