Here I show the removal of pistons and crankshaft from a 6 cylinder Jeep Wrangler engine. This is a 1992 Jeep Wrangler YJ project Jeep I am rebuilding. The engine is a AMC inline 6 4.0L. The process is very similar for the 4 cylinder Jeep engine as well.

Getting ready to do all this!!! I'm so glad you made a series on this! I'm probably going to pick up a book, but you make this look do-able! The keeper on my re-manufactured distributor from Auto Zone cracked on the highway... then my jeep started to sound like a diesel truck... then it locked up. Thanks for putting the tools in the description, I am starting to make a parts and tool list going.

I like that you are looking at the old parts even though you are replacing... It gives me a good idea of what my engine with 163K on it looks like on the inside... So far... I'm pleased...not too worried...

Good. My other jeep has 220,000 on it. I'm assuming it's worse then this one, but I suspect this project jeep wasn't maintained well.

Amazing video, audio, commentary!! Hands down the absolute best into the world of a 4.0!! Loved the unintentional comedy bit..."something stinks!" Then you see white smoke...then I think..."fried kitty kat"?

Wow you actually used your weight bench. I thought maybe it was there for decoration. Another amazing video. My guess is.....summer time. Got to enjoy life too.

My Grand Cherokee has 272,000 on the bullet-proof 4.0. The most I did was replace the rear oil seal, timing chain, gears, lifters and head gasket. For this very reliable engine...that is practically a rebuild. Still running strong.

Yeah. The 4.0 is a great engine. My other 4.0 has 220,000 on it and still running strong.

So excited to do this in the coming months. 🤣let’s see if Enginetech will send me a kit if I do a video! Newbie for sure, but not concerned in the least.

What kind of oil are you using in that engine? The deposits look absolutely horrifying! I have a Ford 3000 diesel tractor I am in the middle of replacing the pistons and rings on and the inside of the crank case looks as good as the day it was built in 1967, no deposits or gunk of any kind. As they say clean as a whistle but it is a diesel and I run Shell Rotella 15-40 in it exclusively. Great videos by the way and they help me with my project.

Great video, I wish I had the time to tear mine down that far. I only did everything but the head gaskets/internals. You'll be done mid-May for sure. I hope you're using the Fel-Pro PermaDryPlus gaskets when you re-assemble it! :)

I sure hope you didn't have .100 end play. I know what you meant though ;) Oh, an alternative to banging on the end caps is to use a punch to tap on the rod bolts. Slightly faster, and less banging on the crank, for what it's worth.

So, I damaged the bearing sleeve that goes between the rear main bearing cap and crankshaft. Found a replacement part but I was too thick. Crankshaft now gas mild grooves. What are your thoughts on this? If I get the right part and put it in, will the motor still run correctly?

16:15 its easier to push than to pull when you have a wrench positioned like that. an elite level bodybuilder can do a 400 pound lat pulldown....but can bench press 500! pushing is better than pulling!

Have tought about stroker kit? Just to get som more performance out of it? Now edelbrock has a alu performance head for the 4.0. That has been a great upgrade.

Yeah. That's a good option. In this case, just doing standard rebuild.

When you check the crank bearings, what do you do if there is extensive wear and deep grooves? Is it just something to notice, but not worry about since you are changing the bearings anyway?

I'd love to tear apart my 4.0 and rebuild it... I lack the time most of all..and the money...until the kids are out of the house...lol... BTW... I finally broke down and bought that Stanley extension ratchet... It's hard to have my jeep down for maintenance living in Florida, especially in the winter time, cuz it's perfect jeep riding weather... Summer is just too dang hot to work on it...

Do you loosen the bearings up in any type of sequencial order?
@JeepSolid
@JeepSolid 4 жыл бұрын
I loosened them in the reverse order that your torque them in. Starting outside and working in. I just broke them loose in that order and worked my way in. I don't know if that is being overly cautious, but I thought it wouldn't hurt.

Did you do a video on getting the jeep ready to remove the engine? You obviously did a lot of work preceding the first video in these series.

There’s a few earlier videos on draining coolant and removing the grill and some other parts. Look at my videos over the months prior to the engine removal. 👍🏼

I really enjoy these rebuild videos. I have an in line 4 :( but it looks basically the same from my understanding. I've never seen in side the crank case or even under the valve cover. The only engine repair I've done is water pump and thermostat (with the help of your videos). With the exception of a little knocking now and then, my engine runs really smoothly. Do you think I need to do any minor rebuild to it at some point? It only has like 126k miles on it. Thanks!
@JeepSolid
@JeepSolid 6 жыл бұрын
That's great. Thank you. If you've been maintaining it well, at 126k miles, I wouldn't dig into a rebuild on it, unless you are having issues with it, like burning oil. They're great engines and run forever. The 4cyl is basically the same. I'm glad my videos have helped you and I hope they continue to help grow your knowledge of these Jeep engines.
