I've watched a lot of these CB install vids for JL's and this one by far is the best. I was a radar and UHF/VHF radio tech in the Air Force and my first Job out of the military was a job at a CB shop located in a truck stop. This channel nailed it. Far better routing of the power and antenna coax and proper grounding of both. A bad ground connection on the antenna will prevent proper tuning giving a high standing wave ratio which will impede radio performance and could over time damage the transmitter final output stage of the radio. I will be getting this bar for my JL. Thanks for a great video. You earned another subscriber today.

I know this is a few years old... but fantastic video! I am an engineer and have been putting radios in Jeeps for 35 years (as a hobby). I have lost count of how many radio systems I have 'fixed' for people by simply adding a ground strap to the tailgate or panel the antenna is mounted to. You are going to save a lot of people some frustration of wondering why they can't talk a mile down the road.

Great video. Ham radios that are remotely mountable I think are the way to go. One only need to study a little bit, and pass a test for the entry level license. One can install the body of the radio in a location that is protected from possible water penetration, as well as out of the field of view. The control head, mic and speaker can then be installed in an accessable location within reach. I use a Lido gooseneck mount that attaches to the seat mounting bolt.. The advantages of amateur radio over citizens band are enormous. They use FM instead of AM, and can run more legal power. They also operate in the VHF/UHF spectrum where there is no band noise. It's a little bit more trouble than a cb radio initially, insofar as the licensing but we'll worth it in the end.
@wayalife5 жыл бұрын
There are tons of people who have installed this CB BAR to run a HAM.
@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire Жыл бұрын
I recently passed my HAM test (Technician)... The proctors encouraged me to try the General test... I had yet to study much for the General and had yet to be able to pass any of the sample General tests that I had taken... Surprisingly, I ended up passing the General... The proctors then encouraged me to take the Extra test also, just for shits & giggles, but since I had not even read the question pool, I had no expectation whatsoever that I might pass it (and I didn't)... My only goal was the Technician, so passing the General was a pleasant surprise... There is FM on CB these days, so that doesn't count as a reason to go the CB route vs the HAM route... The issue is what will you be using the radio for... If you are involved in a group activity (offroad or otherwise), you use whatever they are using... That might be CB, FRS, or GMRS... If you just need the radio because you want to listen to conversations on a long drive or as emergency communications in areas without cellular service, having more options is better and as such, having a radio that can do some of the HAM channels and the CB channels might be something that you would want to look into... The radio that I ordered does 10-12m and if I turn the power all the way down, it is in the legal power range for CB... In a TRUE emergency situation, I'm not going to be concerned about being legal with respect to power or frequencies though... I'm not particularly motivated to talk to random strangers on the radio though... Especially on the HAM or GMRS frequencies where you need to give your FCC call sign and which anyone could look up to find your real name and address on the FCC database... That is a MAJOR security issue as far as I'm concerned... So, I'll just lurk the channels...

The bar I ordered is different than the one you installed. Mine has a gap which made it difficult to mount the cb bracket. It took several washers to fill the gap so the radio would fit in the bracket. Sure would have been easier if the gap didn't exist on the bar.

You might want to put a small piece of vaccum hose where the coaxial cable pops out in front. I had the one on my VHF ground out from rubbing the casing off. Talking on the radio was a joke with it like that. LOL Even some good tape would be enough to protectbit as long as it is watched for rubbing. Love the bar idea! I was thinking of just going with one of the smaller Cobra radio's. Ran a Cobra 19 in a big truck when my radio was in, that little radio was getting out better than the classic sitting beside me. I had matched set of 6' fiberglass whip antenna's that really helped it. The guy with classic wasn't happy, because he was the owner of the little radio I was using...lol

You can do the wiring first and then run it through the bar with a convent exit hole to the radio. Now the windshield can be lowered with no issues.

@wayalife6 жыл бұрын
The clear tape on the Spiderweb Sunshade install is used to prevent rubbing of the paint due to "movement" of the top. Once bolted on, the CB BAR will NOT move. In other words, clear tape shouldn't be needed. But, if you've got some laying around, I don't think it'd hurt to use :)

LOL - well, in a way, it is I suppose. I came up with the idea, people wanted it and this video was made to show why I came up with it and just how easy it is to install :)

Update: I just finished installing the CB Bar on my 2DR JL. It's a snap with the door surrounds. When I inevitably take off my doors for the summer I'll have to use the hardware that Kevin includes with the bar kit, so gotta store it in a safe and easy place to remember. But, I will confirm it's an easy install and looks solid. One other thing to keep in mind is brackets. Eddie carefully explains in his selling page notes at, www.wayalife.com/store/proddetail.php?prod=PARTS-CB-BAR that different brands and sizes of CD (and Ham Radio) will require different brackets and alignment holes. I have the Cobra 29LX Professional Radio. So, do a bit of advance research. Best Buy did not have any brackets that work, so I had to find one at Home Depot and drill it out.

Not sure who Kevin is as my name is Eddie. Glad to hear you were able to get your CB BAR installed.

CB's are the only thing that bug me about the Jeeping community since we picked up our JLU. We've been using GMRS now for three years and it beats CB's out of the water. But every Jeep club or event I've looked up "CB required" uh. :P No bigs however. But I had this same thought, where am I suppose to stuff these things? Great video!
@wayalife5 жыл бұрын
LOL - I call it a CB BAR but really, you can mount whatever you want to it. I've seen lots of guys mount ham or a race radio to it :)

I can’t carry the cross member home to England but I’d buy the two end mounting brackets while I’m in Florida

Great vid as usual. Interesting that one viewer (so far) was so offended that he/she felt the need to give it a thumb's down lol.

Excellent install, but am wondering, why did you not install the antenna near the front of the vehicle eg., on the bumper? Would be closer to the CB unit and less issues with wiring.
@wayalife2 жыл бұрын
LOL - didn't realize what I had done with the wiring was an issue. Either way, I just needed to do it once. Never been a fan of installing antennas up front as they get caught in the kind of thick brush we see in our neck of the woods. Also, I think it looks not that great. Glad you liked the video though :)
@ph4tboy2 жыл бұрын
@@wayalife Apologies, to clarify, I meant running wiring to the front would be a shorter route. I take your point about the thick brush catching the front antennae. Great job on the install.
@wayalife2 жыл бұрын
@@ph4tboy Sure, it would be shorter but that isn't necessarily a good thing. A standard coax cable for a CB is 18' and you do NOT want to coil it around to reduce it's length. You really want to use all of it and that can even be a bit hard to do going all the way to the back.

HELP!....first of all, your stuff is so helpful! Now...what mounting solution do you recommend if my 2021 Rubicon JLU has the One Touch Power Top? New to off roading. Looking forward to the lifestyle. Just picked up a regular sized CB that I can't seem to find a good place to mount it.
@wayalife2 жыл бұрын
Actually, I have a lot of guys with the power top who have installed this CB BAR. I've been told it takes just a bit more work but that it was otherwise, no problem.
@kbbgood5 жыл бұрын
I hope you will be making the mount for tj's and other models.
@wayalife5 жыл бұрын
Honestly, for a TJ, you might be well served to install something like a Rock Hard sport cage. That's what we did back in the day and just mounted a CB to it.
