Although they've made great strides in recent years, big SUVs still don't have the most politically correct image. A less conspicuously supersized 4x4 seems a little more in keeping with the environmental message, some being no more toxic at the tailpipe than your average five-door family estate. But some, inevitably, are more 4x4-like than others and you'd expect a car bearing the Jeep badge to be one of these.
It's the sibling vehicle to the Compass, that rather bulbous model that's not really aimed at an off-road market and while the Patriot we're looking at here shares many of that car's underpinnings, it is, thankfully, more of a proper Jeep, good enough to keep you moving through all but the most extreme conditions. Here's what to look out for when trying to track down a used example.

I drove a 2008 Patriot through the ice field highway in Alberta In the middle of February between Banff and Jasper snow banks for about 20 ft high the road was freshly plowed it was a sunny day with about an two and a half inches of snow on the road I was easily able to maintain 110 km/h and the road is to say the least treacherous curvy steep and winding. As a Canadian who drives some of the craziest winter conditions I couldn't say how impressed I was the little Jeep was able to handle the journey. The CVT transmission and the all-wheel drive do their job and even though the compass is a piece of crap this particular Patriot ran like a top

I own a 2011 Jeep Patriot, the 4x4 version that I bought used at around 150,000 mi. I live in a city where there's absolutely zero infrastructure when it comes to snow so when It snowed heavily one day and we got about a foot and a half to 2 ft of snow on the ground, The roads were pretty much shut down. I trudged through the snow to get to my car, hopped in, engaged the four-wheel drive and drove less than 30 mph all the way home taking back roads and side streets through a foot and a half to two feet of snow all the way home not getting stuck once. Having brand new all-terrain tires helped for sure. I saw people who were driving f-150s and Dodge Durango'a spin out and lose control and other vehicles completely stuck. I was able to just drive around everything and everyone making tracks and got home safely without any traction control problems whatsoever. It took me about an hour to get back when it would normally take about 15 but I was being really cautious about avoiding other drivers. This is my favorite car I've ever bought in my entire life And if I had the money, I'd put a brand new engine in it so it could outlast Me.

If you treat it like a car, Itll last a very very long time, but it’s one of the few vehicles that jeep made that can’t take a huge beating, so as long as your not putting massive tires on it, it’s a good jeep
