Hey don't laugh! These little Jeeps are great all purpose, all weather cars. Like a Subaru but with skidplates and better traction control!
In this video I show you a few uncommon tricks to upgrade your Jeep's navigation, visibility and your confidence off-pavement cleanly and with class. Most of this is applicable to Jeep Compass too!
Let me know if this helped you out!
Here are the part numbers for the OEM skid plates. These are steel, made for real service off pavement. The fuel tank skid plates will not fit 2WD Patriots as those have a different fuel tank.

That's a really good idea to just pull everything out of the spare tire compartment and add noise deadening there because it's a very easy place to get to. I think I'm going to steal your idea. That sounds like a really simple easy thing to do.

I recently acquired. 2017 Patriot, Latitude, High Altitude, 4x4, six spd. auto, 2.4 engine, white with black trim, and I’m very fidgety on wanting to do all kinds of upgrades. I built a poor man’s Rubicon years back with a 1994 YJ with the 4.0, ARB Lockers, thicker splined axles, flipped the diffs to 4:11’s, etc, etc. your video is awesome. I’m concerned about a Rough Country lift and that nasty pinch weld and tire size and recalibration. Thank you for posting, sharing. Frank

Oh man, just make sure those "upgrades" are UPgrades... about once a month I see somebody brag about lifting their Patriot and then a month later either they've got the lift itself up for sale or the whole Jeep. I don't know if you'll take my advice but... don't lift it. Remember you've got 165 pounds of torque, no low range, it's (effectively) impossible to regear your axles... there's just no good that comes from going over ~29" diameter tires on 'em. Recalibrating for a new tire size is the easy part.. takes 90 seconds with JSCAN. But that just fixes transmission shift behavior and speedometer readings it doesn't help with torque! :) Thanks for your comment and I hope you're able to have some good adventures - remember the most impressive mod on any car is the high score on the odometer!

There's no spare tire on the back of a Patriot! It's kept under the floor in the back. I am just using a Swagman Chinook bike rack, great quality for the price it holds the bikes by their tires and one hook over the frame so it fits just about any shape of bike, and fits my 27.5+ chubs too.

Lining the back spare tire tub made a huge difference! The doors made a decent bit of difference too but I didn't remove the whole interior panel just the little bit by the speaker and only put as much in there as I could fit through the speaker hole. I used Noico 80mil deadener and washed each area with rubbing alcohol before applying the deadener to make sure it stuck well.

@shoveI
@shoveI 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I haven't seen any write-ups about it.. except one I wrote on a forum years ago about doing the same thing in a Montero ;) The wiring is easy though.. connect one relay to be triggered by the high beam headlight circuit, connect another relay to be triggered by the fog lamp circuit. This can be done with "T-taps" straight into the wiring harness for those lights - I'd advise using some rubber tape (also known as self vulcanizing waterproof electrical tape) to wrap the T-taps for weather resistance. Do clean work and it will last the life of the vehicle without any trouble. Then use both of those relays in series to power your aux driving lights. That way if either the fog lamps or the high beams are off the aux driving lights will also be off. Then you just need to use JSCAN to instruct the Jeep to let you run high beams and fog lamps at the same time (otherwise this can't work at all).

It didn't have the Boston Acoustics package, no subwoofer, no amplifier and no OEM nav unit. Just four paper speakers and a CD player with Uconnect voice and bluetooth. The OEM radio started making squealing noise and it was never very good to begin with so I replaced that really early before doing much else.

Just bought a 2016 Patriot sport about 2 months ago. Very helpful video, will be getting the OBD2 plug and looking for some factory steel skid plates. I am choosing to put a roof basket on mine though, want to carry some stuff on road trips while keeping the cabin pretty clean for sleeping in.
@shoveI
@shoveI 2 жыл бұрын
Congrats! They're good cars to live with. Since fuel mileage, wind noise, ease of travel without fighting crosswinds and headwinds, etc are important to me I always avoid sticking things on the roof or making aero worse than it already is - so for ease of sleeping inside and carrying stuff I bought a big plastic dorm trunk (Iron Brick brand) - it's big enough for almost all of my camping gear and it's rainproof so I can throw it in the Jeep, then stick it outside while I sleep inside. If necessary I could strap it to the roof too since it's weather resistant but it's not a full-time drag like a basket would be. I'm not suggesting you have to do it that way, if you need a basket go for what works for you! Only explaining in more depth why I decided to keep the roof bare on mine & I carry bikes on a hitch rack behind the vehicle, when I'm carrying bikes.

@@shoveI I plan on also getting a Wilco hitch mounted spare tire carrier. Not too worried about wind drag, I also own a 92 Ranger with a spare tire on the roof lol. The basket that I did get is made of 1/2” conduit so wind drag shouldn’t be too bad. I’ll strap some hard cases and gas cans on it when I go places.

Great video and I like the tip to change the tire size as I need to do that. Just wondering where did you get the light mount on your bumper?
@shoveI
@shoveI 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The light mount is an ACI #90416 bracket, mounted "backwards" - as you can see it fits the contour of the bumper nicely I didn't have to tweak it or modify it at all just flipped it backward. Here's an amazon link amzn.to/3AuMtWw I used nutserts, four behind the license plate on the vertical plane (face of the bumper) and then two directly below the tabs on which the lights mount. The two below the tabs have the same thread pitch and size as the bolts which affix the lamps themselves, so when the lamps screw down it ties them together with the bracket and forms a very tight assembly. That's all standard hardware so if I decide to change to a different kind of lamp in the future there will be no difficulty switching to a different lamp and if I ever decide to remove the assembly altogether I can just paint the heads of a couple carriage bolts and thread them into the nutserts for a clean appearance.

Great video, some great tips on options to add to the car. Have you considered installing a backup camera?
@shoveI
@shoveI 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I did add a back up camera, that's one of the benefits of using the proper CANBUS adapter with an aftermarket car stereo in these cars. There is no analog "reverse wire" to tap into to inform the radio/display that you've shifted into reverse, but the Crux SOOCR-26 has a wire that informs the radio. I got a "better" grade reversing camera made for permanent install through a panel and drilled a small hole next to the tailgate handle to install that in. It isn't really visible from outside because it's hidden under the ledge for the handle but it gives a really clear view of everything I need to see backing up.

love the up grades and have a question. i know you said you didn't want to post hacking into the stock mirror microphone but from the pic you posted alone I can see its the 2 wires you have heat shrink on, looks like 2 different shades of green. I have a 2016 Latitude, same red as yours but mine came with the Boston Acoustics sound system. Love the sound but hated the head unit so like you I upgraded. I installed a Pioneer, Andriod Auto wireless and even added in Maestro and maintained all of the steering wheel controls for the head unit. Only thing I couldnt figure out was how to tap into the Mirror Mics so I have the clip on mic plugged into the back of my head unit. SO, I get it, the tap i is a simple direct microphone swap for me. Basically just cut off the clip on mic, strip down the 2 wires and tap in where you did in the pillar. My question to you. Can you identify which wire is Pos an Neg? Does it matter? If I go by trial and error can it hurt anything? Im assuming its very low voltage but dont want to toast my headunit. Thank you, Ron
@shoveI
@shoveI Жыл бұрын
I don't think it's possible to hurt anything by getting the polarity incorrect because there really isn't any meaningful voltage present there. I used a wiring diagram in a factory service manual I bought from ebay, there are three wires for the microphones, two microphones - pretty sure I only hooked up the left one but the aftermarket radio wouldn't know how to deal with an array and I don't know if two mics simply wired in parallel would work properly. I do know that it picks up my commands correctly and a phone call placed on it apparently sounded good according to my wife. Hope that helps!

My 2016 jeep patriot sport 2.4L doesn't accelerate anything like yours does in the beginning of the video. To be honest I'd love for my patriot to pick up right away and accelerate like yours. Did you do anything that would of changed its acceleration?
@shoveI
@shoveI 2 жыл бұрын
Nothing done under the hood, that was actually mildly uphill and at ~3000ft elevation with the slightly oversized all terrain tires on it, and the metal skidplates and tow hooks and a bunch of sound deadener and a tow hitch adding some weight. I did use JSCAN to update the tire size to be accurate. Since the tires are about an inch larger diameter than stock it changed the shifting behavior of the transmission a little bit just by installing them and recalibrating the car for the new tire size corrected that to shift like stock again. Other than that I've done nothing at all that would affect engine performance, everything related to the engine and transmission, exhaust, intake, etc are all stock. If yours is performing poorly remember that the spark plugs need to be replaced every 30k miles (if stock copper) - that's a really common problem people encounter on these cars and the symptoms of worn out plugs will be reduced performance and also a "hiccup" feeling at steady speeds. Replacing the plugs is very easy thankfully. Officially only stock plugs should be used but I put platinum plugs in mine and expect they will last at least 2x as long as the copper ones. The plugs don't make horsepower but worn out ones cost some. I've also replaced the transmission fluid (Jeep says it's "lifetime" but I don't think any fluid is good for more than 5 years in service no matter what they say) and the lubricant in the PTU and RDU with synthetic ... none of those things is really going to create horsepower that wasn't there to begin with but comprehensive maintenance always lets things work their best.

Great video I just bought a used 2014 with 58k 4x4 base model with gas prices going up thought it was a cool deal. It doesn’t have power windows or or locks so that’s a bit annoying but I figure I could upgrade some things slowly. In your opinion what would you upgrade first
@shoveI
@shoveI 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think there's an economically reasonable way to add power locks and windows, whole different door carrier you'd basically need to get a wrecked Patriot to pull all the parts from it and enable them in the BCM . My Ram truck has manual windows and locks, I've owned it almost 8 years and just kinda accept that it's oldschool. Nice to unlock the door for my wife it lets me pretend I'm a gentleman 🤣 If you haven't serviced the RDU and PTU and transmission I'd suggest doing those, I know that's not an exciting modification but neglect is taking out an awful lot of these Jeeps and car payments suck so if you extend the life of yours, that means you save money in the long run. I haven't had a car payment in years - not because I'm wealthy enough to pay cash for cars but because I keep them going a long time.. doubt I'll be car shopping again before 2030 :) As far as actual modifications go, I really like the skidplates and recovery hooks - they make it a lot easier to pick the "scenic" route while camping because I know I won't be poking a hole in the oil pan on a pointy rock, or stuck with no way to recover it if the road gets muddier than expected. But if you never drive off pavement those things won't be as useful to you. A modern 2DIN head unit and reversing camera are great, for carplay/android auto, navigation, etc. I was able to find a OEM style camera and mount it under the rear hatch handle so it's almost invisible, did really clean work so it looks/works like it was original equipment. It's excellent for parking on the crowded streets down town and an extra way to look out for small kids and animals while backing out of my driveway. If you go with a new radio, my suggestion is to avoid the kind that runs on Android.. nothing against that as a phone operating system but it's terrible as a car radio operating system. Stick with 2DIN sized name brands like Sony, Kenwood, Pioneer, Alpine or even Jensen and you'll be glad you did.

So I’m looking at a 14 Sport 4x4 with 82k on it. It has the smallest of the small wheels and stock tires that are ready to be replaced. I’m very interested in the 235/75/15 option because of the price and extra cushion for the ride. These will fit the Jeep on 15x7” rims with no mods? If so that great because like you that’s what I’m looking for, an overlander if you will. I’ll be driving from Illinois to Maryland and then on to Florida (or viceversa) at least once a year and I want to maximize mpg and high speed handling while still retaining a modicum of off road ability to explore. Do I need to look at certain backspacing or offset on say a 15x7” wheel? Thanks!!
@shoveI
@shoveI 7 ай бұрын
I don't know all of the details on fitment but the wheels I used are from a Jeep ZJ (1st generation Grand Cherokee) and their specifics are 15x7" with a 32mm offset, 5 x 114.3 mm bolt pattern and 71.5 mm hub bore. To fit the Patriot properly I bought hub rings (67.1mm71.5mm) and a 3mm spacer for the fronts only to clear the brake caliper. This arrangement has been absolutely trouble-free.

I could not find J-stan. most important, it would be great to change the tire size. also the skid plate on the front would be nice to find one. the model of Jensen radio - does it play Cd's ? that looks like a nice upgrade. Your jeep seems to have a lot more power - performance than my 2017 jeep latitude with a 5 or 6 speed automatic transmission.
@shoveI
@shoveI Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! The app is called JSCAN - it's available for iOS and android, here jscan.net/ The Jensen aftermarket radio I installed does not play physical media, but there is nothing unique about the one I got it's standard 2DIN size . I would caution against any aftermarket radio that is based on the Android operating system (usually no name brands) because unlike Android Auto which is made specifically to work well while driving, the Android "desktop" environment is a terrible user interface for driving. Best bet is get on crutchfield.com and shop for what fits your Jeep on there - Crutchfield has awesome customer service and because supporting junky products is expensive, they don't sell any truly junky products. Power is adequate on my Jeep but I haven't done anything special to get more power, in fact the all terrain tires made it slightly slower than it was with the stock street tires. I'm not sure why so many people complain about the power on these Jeeps they're not muscle cars but mine gets up and goes as well as any other non-turbo 4 cylinder car I've ever owned.

@shoveI
@shoveI Жыл бұрын
I didn't have any difficulty on mine it was as easy as it seems... but one thing to keep in mind is that Jscan is not compatible with 100% of all OBD2 adapters. On their website they have a list of confirmed compatible adapters - perhaps check if yours is on that list? Good luck!

Hey what aftermarket radio is that? I can’t get find one that will fit?
@shoveI
@shoveI Жыл бұрын
The model number is a Jensen CAR70V but that isn't important, any 2DIN sized radio will fit properly. One of the most widely respected car audio websites is crutchfield.com (I have no affiliation with them) - they have a really good fitment tool that identifies what will fit your car and when you order the radio they send you the dash fitting kit for your car. There's also a wiring kit that is needed to turn power on/off (our Jeeps use a data bus for this) but Cructhfield identifies that for you and offers it at a pretty cheap price.

Not as far as I can tell.. but I only went up 1" diameter on the tires vs. stock (215/65R17 which is 28" to 235/75R15 which is 29" ) and I recalibrated the car with JSCAN for the new tire size so the transmission & electronic throttle didn't get taken out of their engineered specs. If you've seen any of my other videos you know I go subtle when I change something on a car - it's not a good recipe for Instagram fame but that 80/20 rule comes into play; 80% of the benefit comes in the first 20% of change and avoids basically all the compromises. What usb port did you use to connect it to the CarPlay radio?

Where’d you run the wire through? The glovebox? Or is it hollow behind the radio/vent area?
@shoveI
@shoveI Жыл бұрын
@@ellispage190 I just drilled a hole the correct size for the USB fixture, while the radio was out it's easy to see where it's open (to avoid blindly drilling into something expensive... ) and there is plenty of room to run the wire directly to the back of the radio.

The aux. driving lamps are PIAA #410 and the install kit (two lamps and the wiring harness and relay, etc) is #4152 - here's an Amazon link amzn.to/3K2qca3 Here is the product page on PIAA www.piaa.com/store/p/74-410-Driving-Intense-White-Halogen-Lamp-Kit.aspx and you can probably google the part numbers to find a set for sale from whatever retailer you prefer.

Where did you get the skid plates
@shoveI
@shoveI 2 жыл бұрын
I just googled for the part numbers, bought them from different suppliers based on who had them. Both of the fuel tank plates were from Jeep dealers who were selling them (new) on Ebay. Here are the part numbers: 5105236AB - front skid plate 5105234AA - right fuel tank 5105235AA - left fuel tank 6104414AA - 4 - BOLT AND CONED WASHER, Hex Head, M10x1.5x30 6104428AA - 3 - BOLT AND CONED WASHER, Hex Head, M10X1.5X65.00 Bolts for gas tank skid plates: 6104424AA - 6 - BOLT AND WASHER, Hex Head, M10x1.50x55.00, Fuel Tank Strap to Crossmember, Mounting 6506644AA - 13 - RIVET NUTS For the bolts I wasn't able to find all of the actual part numbers at reasonable prices - I don't mind spending real money for good things but $25 per bolt isn't happening! So I searched the size on ebay instead (like M10X1.5X30) along with Mopar names like Dodge, Plymouth, Chrysler, Jeep, Ram etc and found exactly the same parts much more cheaply, advertised as stuff like "chrysler concorde alternator bracket bolt M10X1.5X30" (that's just an example I made up) For the rivet nuts I didn't buy Jeep ones either, I bought this Rivnut tool amzn.to/3isUo0P & it came with a few bags already in the correct size, plus now I have the tool and extra rivnuts which are super handy. Pro tip on rivnuts, no drilling is necessary to install skidplates on your Jeep (holes are already there) but if you drill new holes in anything for rivnuts in the future use a file to square off the hole you drilled, or make it lemon shaped. That way when the rivnut crushes into it you get an interference fit and the rivnut itself won't spin when you try to loosen it in the future.

What about additional upgrades to the engine and transmission cuz your definetely need that since they are so poorly made and I know that for facts because I own A 2016 Jeep Patriot latitude 2.0 and I've already had to replace the engine, The tipm twice, not to mention All the repairs I had to do to the AC system and recently my transmission overheated and And caused the transcooler hose to blow off and and we got the majority of all the transmission fluid So I'm waiting to see if My transmission messed up And that's all on a vehicle that has a 125000 miles
