Primal Outdoors - Camping and Overlanding

Күн бұрын

My friend Gary got his Jeep and trailer stuck in the spring mud, so I took my old Ford truck out to rescue him. Don't buy your recovery gear from Amazon. Although Yankum ropes are mentioned many times in this video, no actual Yankum products were used in this recovery.

Jason, kudos to you for helping Gary in his pinch. Just some armchair observations that I would like to highlight. These can be ignored and I won't fret about it. 😊 Traditionally you would want to pull from the rear of your truck (if you have the option) for two reasons. One, if any of the metal mounting hardware comes in your direction, it will find you. A hood up can suppress some if not all of the missle, but that isn't certain. Second, rear loading your ring and pinion is the weaker of the two options. The R&P are designed primarily for forward torque. Again.....I have no skin in this game, and you can do with this info as you like. I won't rib you about it any further. 😅

When using a kinetic rope, the idea is to leve some slack in the rope and get a bit of a run up not just pull on the rope . That is a static pull.

Well, since I was really bogged, and could dig out due to the cement, we didn't want to try and pull too hard. Just wanting to see how much give before we did. Not much give and you saw.

I personally have seen several Warn winches fail or not powerfully enough. I have the exact smitty Bilt since 2015 and have recovered vehicles heavier than your van out of the South FL Swamps. They all break. The rope and shackles not the strongest , but I am sure they'd be fine. A good tip is to pop your hood when winching so it won't go through window. ~ James & Meghan.

I've pulled 2 full size trucks, a small suv and a large Amazon delivery van out of the mud with my 2013 2dr Jeep JK. All I had were Harbor Freight ratchet straps and only one of the four broke. I have a kinetic rope and tow strap now but a winch will have to wait. Great video Jason, you're a good pal for driving that far for your friend. Three of my 'recoveries' were in my front yard and one was around the corner.

That short low growing sage brush, "silver" sage, beside the road is an indicator of a seasonal high water table. If you're going to drive on it in the spring you'd better have a good sense of humor and a strong back! Once you've broke through the surface crust, there's no bottom to it. Nice recovery!

I can't remember what Chrome had on his E-250, either a Warn or SmittyBilt, but it went out on him and he replaced it. I can't remember which way he goes, but I think I've only seen him use it twice. That looks like it was used more, because Chrome always tries to not use his equipment. "Can I get under this tree!?" Me: "Just use your chainsaw!"

My recovery gear shackles are Crosby 12.5 ton WL Sling saver shackles, and instead of a recover strap with two eyes mine is a continuous one that has a WL many times the weight of the vehicle I have. I only use products that are certified with a WL and Crosby Shackles are proof tested to 2.5 times WL. People need to stop dicking around with inferior product, just go buy a spool of Dyneema SK99 or Spectra rope and make their own eye splices and load it on your winch. Dyneema SK99 is stronger than steel cable and significantly smaller in diameter i.e. you can fit more line on your winch drum. The other great feature of Dyneema is that it has lower energy if it should ever break unlike steel cable that can whip and severely injure or kill bystanders. There are hand winches made in the Netherlands by Gebuwin that could be used instead of another electric winch, these winches have tons of gear ratio and have two input options, the person can use the handle or use the secondary input stub and connect to a battery operated drill. A winch is something that is used very rarely so using a hand operated winch in an emergency is perfect as it cannot break. The largest hand winch Gebuwin makes has a pulling force of 7,500kg or 16,535 pounds. This winch also has 120m or 394 feet of rope storage, just think of all the recovery options with this much line. With a few snatch-blocks you could double or triple the pulling force for when you are in real deep shit.

That winch should have pulled that Jeep out no issues. I have a lesser quality 12000lb winch on my GMC 1 ton that has never let me down. Even the cheap winches are decent quality nowadays. Manufacturing has become so automated and raw materials have become so refined the era of super crap products is all but over.

90% of the video is what not to do. If you’re going to use a kinetic rope, leave some slack and “yank it”. Don’t use it as a tow strap. You can’t build any kinetic energy that way. Also- nothing wrong w buying your recovery gear from Amazon. As long as you buy quality gear. I bought plenty of factor 55/warn gear from Amazon.
