Thank you for the nice comments and its a very good question ..It's a very simple reason I m not a boxer and I Always assume everyone knows how to kick so I punch vertical from the front and the rear (A) it's the back bone of JKD also I protect my ribs from getting hit ..By returning into the horizontal pinch it will open me up for the Attack .. I hope that's helpful ..

Helo minasz! I practiced jet kune do/wingchun in philipines a while now...bruce has been my idol since I was a kid..vertical punch is the natural postiion of our hands they way we stantd so its faster and no fist rotation..its still powerful wen u use it as cross punch bec we use power from the hips not from the arms..bigger muscles like hips move faster bruce lee said..and the force from the hips transfers to ur fist when u twist ur torso and twist the ball of ur feet..i can even shut off a candle by the wind force of my fist..jet kune do vertical punch is very powerful like sifu george mentioned bec all came from hips and legs..if u can read brucelees book and see hes interviews this punch I can say is the most powerful punch..

So is JKD always southpaw then? I’m a amateur heavyweight boxer and I’m gonna fight one of my friends in boxing vs JKD. Also a lot of this seems fundamentally similar to boxing. Even the jab. We call that a stiff jab. A favorite of sonny Liston or George foreman.

I can't speak for Sifu George but I believe you can. I'm pretty sure Bruce used some boxing techniques and applied it to JKD from what I've been told and read. I've seen Manny Pacqiuo throw the straight vertical punch to get through other peoples guards instead of always throwing the standard boxing horizontal punch.

HueyShabazz Correct...he has an excellent straight lead. Tons of power on the punch that will hit the most.

I was reading some of the comments and smirking.The funny thing is most keyboard warrior talk a lot crap but not one person that gives Advices (AS)SHOW HOW THEY WILL DO IT.I can write all day long but showing it is another thing...We all students and want to learn please show me how you would do it so I can correct you.I will guarantee you are doing it WRONG. .Vertical Punch ntensive study has proven that a Jeet Kune Do punch is much more powerful and effective than a karate punch, whereas the karate seikin zukie punch showed more effectiveness as far as exercises and muscle development is concerned. The vertical punch is the most natural position to release the power equally to the target, and your wrist and elbow will not bend when the punch connects with the target. In addition, you are not open for any injuries; your whole bone structure, alignment, and every muscle in the arm is used to its maximum equally, like the forearm, biceps, triceps and the shoulder. Also we use the last three knuckles instead of the first two knuckles, so it’s like hitting someone with a 2x4. By rotating the hand when executing the horizontal punch and adjusting the wrist to line up the bone with the fist you are not distributing the power equally. Some muscles will be used more then others, that is why you might be injured. Some techniques might require a horizontal punch, but it is executed differently from the karate horizontal punch - in Jeet Kune Do it uses the same exact principle as the vertical punch. This way you still have your whole bone structure and alignment behind it. Just simply turn the wrist inward without adjusting the knuckles so they can line up with the target.

+Sifu George Hajnasr i learned jkd punching techniques from the book, "bruce lee's fighting method". i became a very powerful puncher (in spite of how skinny i was), such that i knocked a bodybuilder who was bigger than me & holding the heavy bag, back into the wall behind him, yelling at me to stop. proof that u can learn from a book. but of course, u do need to practice & learn w/others, including a teacher as yourself to get the full benefit. the way u explained it including the xtra rotation of the hips, is the way it was explained in the book, except that it goes into more detail about the snap of the hand/fist which gives it even more power. ur explanation of the anatomical alignment is spot on. i have a seen some instructors who used a horizontal fist, & wondered where they got their credentials to teach jkd. great tutorial. thanx.

Sensei, I'm developing my own system (Bat-kun-do) for a Batman fan film I'm producing. I honestly beleive that he needn't go round the world to learn every martial art, so I'm incorporating some Karate chops to the deltoids post power jab, tae kwon do basics , some close range shoulder to jaw atacks, and David Carradines basic tae chi. My goal is to emulate the effectivity of Kato in a stealthy way. Fully indie so its a long way to go, but I gotta thank you for this, a lot of details I've been looking for to perfect my technique I've found them here. Long live your Academy!

I've been getting into boxing and jkd punching drills and combos, and of all the videos I've seen you've actually taken the time to explain and show the jkd techniques in a slowed down way. The other guys want to show off their speed. Looks good and all, but if I can't tell what's happening, what's the point of tutorial? So, yeah, thanks for this video.

Bruce lee quote"Don't Concentrate on the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory...The rear cross IS NOT a straight vertical punch.It has a slight twist in it around 10 degree angle so your bone structure and shoulder lines up with the writs and the target .In MY JKD I DON'T throw a straight vertical punch nor do I punch with a rear horizontal punch do to a lack of power and bone alignment .A boxer Wraps his hands other wise the wrist will bend in a downward motion.lAST TIME I CHECKED in a REAL fight you don't have time to wrap up to protect your write from bending forward causing damage .

The jkd vertical straight lead is the same as the splitter jab in boxing to get through opponents guard. .it also gives u a longer reach when u turn the fist like boxing jab u shorten your reach its just the way the human arm works its scientifically proven

Hmm... Let's see.... I've trained at IMB Academy in Torrance in the early 80's (under Dan Inosanto and Richard Bustillo RIP) , trained in wing Chun In San Francisco and have 8th degree in Kenpo. So those are my Qualifications to make comments, as opposed to those who are making comments who are not Martial Artists. I also share my school with a JKD class. after seeing so many JKD(?) experts, this is the best breakdown of this style of hitting I've seen yet. Anyone who makes negative comments should post their own videos..

I have heard rumors that there is a man who aspires to become the first martial arts action star and singer. He is of Spaniard and Mexican descent. His vision is to change entertainment and create opportunities for the Latin people and immigration. Many say he is very fast when he strikes whether it be a kick or a punch. He also loves Bruce Lee and aspires to advance Jeet Kune Do into his own fighting art. Many say he is a handsome guy full of energy and a big heart. He goes by the name of "Kenji Lucian".

How come jkd practitioners never through a punch with a twists at the end of it like reverse punch? They only throw straight punches. Which in theory are weaker because there's no snap of the end of the bullwhip so to speak.

+Levi Matthews This guy isn’t really performing a JKD punch; it’s his version which is fair enough. Yet, if you want power in your punches, you have to push off with your left leg, violently snap your hips to the center line, thrust your spine towards the center line. Then allow your shoulder, elbow to snap to the center line, then roll your wrist to deliever your weight to punch. I have yet to see anyone perform a JKD punch with the power of Bruce Lee on You-Tube; I suggest getting videos that show Bruce lee and reading his books.

+WARBORN EXPERIENCE I don't understand. if you punch will all of your weight, what is the point of the twist? other than open up your guard..
@warbornexperience9796
@warbornexperience9796 9 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question. Most don’t even remember there is a twist of the hip, back, shoulders, eblows and wrists. It is transfer the weight from the ground through entire body to the striking point. It isn’t necessary to transfer all of your weight all the time; With practice you can put a fracation of your weight (power) or all of it into a attack. BTW, if you are striking from on-guard, your hips and etc should be going towards the center-line, which means you should be closing your guard. Keep in mind there is no correct way of doing JKD, there is only your way. Except, if you get knock out. Then you are doing it wrong. LMAO!

WARBORN EXPERIENCE When you say keep in mind, you mean, you keep it stuck in your own mind that jkd is 'your' jkd. no there is a correct way of doing jkd. there are principles of combat to follow.. people always make that dumb assumption with that quote and I hate it. I think you mis-understand because you simply don't understand what I'm talking about, you need to study some jkd xD Elbow in (guarded) elbow out (no guard)

+Fumetsu no Jutsu I have study JKD for almost 20 years. I have applied in real life scernarios. At this point, I wouldn’t say I use JKD. As Brandon Lee stated, each person studies JKD and creates their own system of fighting. That is the beauty of JKD concept you aren’t wearing someone’s else suit, you have a tailor made suit for yourself. That is what I mean there is no correct way of performing JKD. As far as the techniques like the leading right & etc; there is really only one way because it based on the human body and its motions. You can modify certain things to your taste, somethings can’t. Example, I strike with the pointer & middle finger knuckles because they are attached to stronger bone. You are less likely to twist your wrist upon impact. I adopt a slighty wider stance silmilar to the stance in Big Boss. Your last comment puzzles me though. The Wing Chun princilple of “immovable elbow” is in JKD On-Guard stance. Your elbow shouldn’t extend when you throw your punch. There is a bend in the elbow. I realize that you probably don’t believe me. As I have no way, besides filming myself punching a bag to prove what I am claiming. I would leave you with this. Even, if a person is wrong, there is knowledge to be gain from that person. I prefer to ask questions and build my bank of knowledge on any subject. Cheerio
