I used to read a lot till class 10th and as a result despite not having prepared for entrance since class 9 I was able to interpret questions better than most of my fellow batchmates enrolled in such coachings prior to me 2. Till class 11 I had teachers who used to make me strictly mug up methods and I started hating the subject . But in class 12 I got a teacher who used to give most questions for brain storming and thanks to this I started loving the spirit of math again and aced math in advanced

I do regret a bit about how I used to give so many olympiads from early ages (from 1st to 7th) and heck even went to state level for the examinations. The skills that I learned through these examinations were so helpful to me and I had that genuine love/curiosity for the subject but from high school, I only focused on exams and relayed on that rote learning method, and now I'm currently in 11th but luckily our Maths, Chem faculty are superb in making that creative problem-solving skills, bless him! but now I've realized the only skills that matter in competitive exams are the problem-solving skills that I lost fortunately enough there is still time to implement this change. Very well said prof. For context I was lucky for math I never memorized anything from childhood and derived almost all the formulas from furst principles. I used to create my own problems and try to solve them myself for fun. This I think developed a lot of independent thinking in me that enables me to solve challenging problems in my career now. The usual excuse is it takes time to solve things by urself without looking at formulas, but this time spent really helps u to learn. For context, I have a PhD in Electrical engineering, have some 200+ granted patents ( US/international) and now working on Autonomous Driving research, that is pretty challenging and u dont find a formula to solve it in any book. We have to build innovation ourselves, and definitely learning problem solving skills at a young helps later in ur career. I didnt study at an IIT but I think I am doing decent. It is ok if you dont get into a great school, but learning good problem solving skills is more important.

Sir, you really gave me a reality check in my academics. I'm fresher in 11th grade and started my syllabus 2 months before only, but now when I'm watching your video after video , I've realised that I was just trying to find a similar pattern in mathematics really forgetting that what the subject fundamentally demands- 'THINKING'. The points you mentioned in your videos are very precisely significant. Proffesor , I am a student just passed class 12th this year and a dropper preparing for JEE . Sometimes I also think of it that, Mathematics is the language developed by humanity which co-relates and defines the working mechanism of nature and the universe (also making a new subject physics ). With its upcoming problems we definitely need solutions , but in schools and tutions i think in most cases we actually learn the given sets of problems and its given sets of solution as you said in this video . here i think the issue is the word GIVEN we directly learn the solution of the question we face and remember it by practicing it to a level instead of thinking about the solution for the question without minding how much time it would take .as many people already solved the question before using there time and came up with varios methods to solve it . i think we should learn the way to solve how we can do the problem properly at school and tution. but nothing we can do since we need to develop to learn many things sooner and also as examinations have a time limit for which we need to cope up with it . therefore we feel difficulty in preparing for examinations like jee and advance since we need to think to how to solve it before remembering the likely solution like in board examination. guide us the proper way using time in mathematics problems pofessor.

Hello sir, I am a masters student in physics in IItg... I remember my math tuition teacher used to write a problem on board and asked us to solve it by ourselves ... We used to love trying that question in the beginning mostly we could not but one day suddenly we did solve it on our own... That happiness used to be precious. Considering the language skills development part, I feel the best way I have learnt it by being the editor of my school magazine and participating in literary activities like debating, or even simply giving a speech. These things are usually ignored as wastage of time, but seriously, with the right efforts can be extremely rewarding. This might just as well be an anecdote, or probably a good communication/ language development strategy, who knows ?

Studying same text again n again is enough!!. You can get familiar with any alien language even without having any relevant knowledge if you study it repeatedly and consciously. by 3rd or 4th time you will capture the formulas and pattern of that language. You be able read between lines , figure out patterns and even solve questions effectively without practicing. But that can be little frustrating and require somewhat more dedication.

Writing out your thoughts helps one to organise, evaluate and clarify them. Reading comprehension helps in building logic and analytical ability and problem identification and problem statement. It also develops imagination to fill in the missing pieces or identifying assumptions built into problem. I've found it extremely useful to use a private wiki to jot down my initial thoughts on a topic and incrementally add, subtract, modify and most importantly clarify my thoughts by finding gaps in my thinking. Basically it's like being able to observe and inspect one's thoughts objectively and critically as a third person would. It allows one to extract the core essentials from the incidental. Kind of like the Pensieve used by Dumbledore in Harry Potter where he brings out different memories and stirs them and isolates the essential ones from the incidental ones. Many of the important works done by cutting edge scientists was done in the form of pen and paper letters for long distance communication. I think this really helped them to focus and concentrate their mental faculties and review their line of thinking/approaches while explaining to others half formed ideas or intuitions or identify missing pieces or faulty reasoning or backtrack to a branch not taken. Similar techniques are used in AI to generate decision tree and prune dead end branches and evaluate/backtrack different options/branches in depth wise or breadth wise manner.

I realized what mathematical problem solving intuition meant only in my first year in college - and this was through my room mate. He solved Math problems like I solved Physics problems. Interestingly, he never went to a coaching institute. Explains a lot.

Respected, professor. You said that a person needs to realise if he or she is good enough for jee or neet or not, but there have been innumerable cases where people who were not good enough for a very long time, but they worked hard to reach at the pinnacle in the scientific field. Lately, one of the fields medalists "june huh" is one such example. I believe, everyone can do anything, but i agree with your thoughts on developing the intuition by practicing.

Fortunately, I had a few Excellent teachers who encouraged me to approach problems independently. Well said, I recommend you suggest people to do something called "olympiads" conducted by HBCSE. Although this is popular in case of physics and chemistry (also due to coaching) but for maths it's not as common as the other two subject reason being very few people actually teach it. The problem solving mentality you develop by doing olympiads is insane and will most definitely help you in the future.

That’s true. In my Class 10, I observed that many of the students could not do even simple and basic calculations. They didn’t know the basic methods and concepts of mathematics which are taught in lower classes. What you told about language is also true. Good advise. I have had this perpetual complaint that students nowadays do not spend any time with a course/subject book. Unless that level of devotion is there, learning remains very shallow and superficial. I also ask students to read fiction/non-fiction to also develop reading habits and understand how sentences are constructed. Again, this advise falls on deaf ears.

Sir, you really saved me.. I've a habit of reading even a small box item from my textbook of Physics or any other subject some times i thought that it is useless cause everyone said solve questions as many as you can and not everyone focuses on the every text of ncert which i thought is good to read. And I really don't like the competative environment offered by coaching institutes. Therefore, I've avoided coachings and tuitions since my 7th class one of region was corona. We still had this "coaching institutes issue" some 30 years back when I was attempting various competitive exams. I could have done much better without them. They broke my confidence and exposed me with some some students who acted smart. My advise is: don't rely on teaching, rely on learning. Going to IIT means, aiming to become leader. Eduction starts within. Empower yourselves. Last but not least, I complete agree with the presenter here. I can see his seriousness as he kept the phone hanging so not to be bothered.

I am very glad to know about the fact you explain in your video and reading lots of comments in this case . The teacher who changed your view about mathematics in class 10 or 9 was able to do it because of your maturity in mathematics. Teaching anything is such a thing you have to have to follow known to unknown. When you are in 6-8 in standard syllabus are can not allow to make something you advise, when you look on mathematics book in every chapter we see the main aspects is exercise, when we talking about mathematics we say practice maths is the best thing to make you perfect, at the age 10 to 16 if you say anybody to think over a problem over 5 min and then solve it , you must be joking. Im currently preparing for jee in class 12 and till 11th class..... I never picked up a book to read theory Bcz all these teachers used to say that "mujhse samajh lo book se samajh nhi aayega" And so i thought...... Books are only made for problem solving and not theory But since the start of 12th I've been studying on my own, from books, without any help And i can say for sure that it has helped me a lot, it saves a lot of time and my problem solving abilities have also improved a lot

So enlightening and motivating. In class 11th I joined coaching institute, could not cope with their rather detrimental teaching methodologies, cried everyday for 2 months as I slowly started to lose interest in studies(which before class 11th I had quite enjoyed, learning through KZbin, and watching scientists from all across the globe). I could not tolerate it and gave up. I spent a lot of time learning how to learn, and becoming efficient. I also tried developing mathematical intuition, by the great help of teachers like Eddie Woo, Grant Sanderson, Marcus du Satoy. I am so glad I did. I am planning to give the JEE exam, not sure if I would do well. I don't know if I would be successful, my parents are also worried. I have been a good student, I love science, and foremost, try to apply scientific thinking, logic, to daily life, but fear going through the rigorous competition. Nothing is certain. I don't know if you would be reading this Professor. But if you do, please can you consider giving somev advice.

There is no special advice needed, actually. I can relate somewhat to the feelings you had when going through coaching. Just cosmetically "knowing" the topics through coaching classes without really understanding does not really help. If you are genuinely interested in science you can go for BSc and then proceed strongly from there.

As a student who appeared for jee once and going to appear again just for a shot, I genuinely want to advice you and tell you that you took a great decision to opt self study,as far I'm guessing with your intrest in subjects you must have a good hold of concepts If that so you are still at a good phase of cracking exam for your desired college and for that you should focus more on practice and question solving (solve pyqs for mains if that's what you r aiming for ,or both if you are aiming for advanced),also try to give as much mock test you can and analyze them and repeat This will increase your speed and accuracy for the exam and build your exam temprament

My maths tutor during high school would always explain the concepts and ask us to solve all the problems by ourselves with all that were taught. He wouldn't show us how to approach a single problem unless we got stuck doing one. Even he asked us to not go through the given example problems as well. I haven't landed in IITs or NITs due to my lack of motivation and laziness but atleast I am grateful to him for teaching me how to approach problems without the mindset of looking up for solutions.

I can relate to this situation. Up to class 8, we were taught maths to just be a mechanic and to correctly assign correct methodology to the correct question. It was in class 8 that due to the KZbin algorithm I was able to access an expanded world of mathematics. From various foreign college professors to Olympiad guides, I developed better problem-solving skills, ways to decide how to approach a problem. In the following year, I was doing the same to Physics and Chemistry, thanks to my dad's friend who then recently became a tuition teacher; unlike in schools where all the emphasis was on mugging up definitions. I was an ardent story-based gamer upto class 9th and that helped me enrich my English skills. After that I switched my interest to computer history and programming-debugging and studying from magazines, communicating with people on forums helped.

Absolutely agree with you sir , same thing 3idiot movie had also delivered to audience ......The thing you said is absolutely true and this was the most pricking pain of mine throughout my whole school time period, that where they're teaching problem solving, they just throwing solutions and methodology not the mindset and philosophy to think , i always used to think does newton , einstein , etc geniuses also mugged up like this...not at all , bcoz they created these things by observing nature and with their own philosophy and will power.. i think teacher should teach mindset to the children of thinking not the methodology.... But at the end i concluded that most of the teacher in the school (almost more than 95%+) themselves don't know this thing, they also mugged up it from somewhere and transferring it to the next generation... this is one of the biggest reason why we lack in Innovation and solving real world problems.

I am currently in class 12th, will be having my pre boards most likely in the last week of November, practicals from January 1st and board exams from February 15th. And i mentioned all that unnecessary information because I had to acknowledge the fact that how unprepared I am at the moment. I came across your video don't know how though I'm thankful that I did, and i realised one thing that everything you said about a student being in the phase from 6th to 10th standard, everything, I felt holds true for me. At this point I am not even sure if whatever I went through, whatever happened to me, whatever I did to myself is regrettable. One thing I'd like to add is that I never took proper tutions or coachings till I was in 10th grade. I had to take coaching for 2 months before my 10th board exams because I was not so good at math but I wanted a good report card so that my family might give me some value or consideration that yeah she isn't all dumb, we could invest in her. I secured an aggregate of 92% overall from cbse board, and I'm mentioning cbse so that one can understand that it's not that big of a deal. I have the same typical aspirant story where till 10th you're bright, good at sports, performing arts, extra curriculars as well as studies and then you're introduced to this competitive exam world mainly JEE/NEET. I cannot say that I was forced into it by anyone, in my case there was no peer pressure, no family pressure nothing of that sort. So I went for it, opted for PCB joined coaching, did offline in 11th and hell it was hectic. In 12th i switched to online so that I'm able to save some time and put that time into more useful things. Due to not having the proper problem solving and mathematical abilities, I became a flunking student in both my 11th & 12th. I've heard "when you're trying to do something you do not care about, you're going to be stressed" but the thing is that in my case I was sure that I wanted to do this, and yet why do i doubt myself? The frequency of these doubts have only increased with time, now I get these thoughts too much, thoughts like "am i in the wrong place"? Or "is this even made for me"? As a person, it completely changed me because I am able to analyse the kind of person I was until this NEET exam was introduced to me. I became introverted, silent, sometimes too chaotic on the inside, anti-social and so on. Now, these changes are both positive and negative. I try to perceive them in a positive way. So anyways, this video was a good one I mean i could relate to almost everything you discussed about. However, now that I'm able to understand the things you said, it's too late and I can only imagine a 6th grade student, if was shown this video would understand anything you're talking about at all. I can only say this on my behalf, i would not be able to understand the things or relate to the things you talked about in this video when i was in 6th standard or even 7th/8th. So my point is that by the time I'm ready to comprehend these issues, I've already been a part of the issues.

@@Marvel173 I don't find myself qualified enough to advise aspirants because I myself am one at the moment, but alright. There could be two scenarios, 1st that you're financially able that your parents can afford offline coaching and 2nd is that you cannot. So if you can, join Allen or Akaash (tbh it's not all coaching, it's your habits that'll decide how your preparation is gonna be and that'll ultimately decide your results). But if you want to go for online, there are various options. Few I'd go for are NEETprep, eSaral, maybe PW. Allen digital is good too.

I think I can understand what you are trying to say here. My suggestion is that to not being despondent. I am sure there are parts of the science syllabus which you feel comfortable with, perhaps even feel that you have a certain strength in. Try to identify those. Perhaps you can think seriously about going into BSc into that subject ... and slowly specialize in your area of strength. That would be a more fruitful approach rather than arbitrarily joining some professional degree course and not doing well.

Very well analyzed and advice sir :-). Most schools in India are regimented through syllabus and never encourage students to think out of the box. Most students in India are wired to learn how to commit and then vomit (memorize and then spill) in exams, therefore no chance of actually learning and problem solving methods. I am generalizing of course, there are exceptions. Has anyone ever wonder that out of 1.3 billion people in India, why there are only handful of Nobel prize winners???

Sir I am a class 10 grade student. I am not good at maths because I just can't remember the method of solving technique taught by the teacher. I am a slow learner in math because I just think the problem very deep.I am very sad about the education system of India and the top colleges are just producing extraordinary students but I can't understand why they are not solving the problem of education system at base. Sir I want to take a experience of JEE exam and I will work towards the improvement of education system. So the problem I am facing will not be faced by upcoming generations. I scored decently in class 10th and used to think I am good at maths only to realise later that at root level I used to just mug up(or say practice to hide it) the entire Book and memorizing the approach of problems and proofs I didn't understand. I never questioned my approach cuz it was working for me, I wish the school would have taken exams on more of a conceptual approach like they do in 11th and 12th.

Hello sir , I have done MSC in operation research from iit Mumbai and have been math faculty in Allen for few years. I totally agree with you sir but I also have to say some points. 1) Nowdays students dont eve have the time to think . 2) 2 years is very less to finish jee syllabus so student is forced to learn and mug up techniques else if he starts developing thinking then he will lose everything and may not even get admission in decent college also. 3) In our country if one tries to develop creativity in subject he will fail everywhere and time will be gone. 4) in this rat race and less time students cant sit patiently and think and think. Not possible to spend so much time.will have to go with flow.

@@zoro8800 hi dear ! Well here is the reality! 1) never try to learn the subject from heart as it wastes time. Prepare strictly as per syllabus. 2) practice from good study materials like from fiitjee ,narayanan, test series etc .. 3) dont waste time thinking and thinking developing creativity etc...u cant afford ..only 2 years and 3 huge subjects. 4) see the solutions and try to understand the techniques used in solving them and remember them. 5) u have to be choosy smart and to the point . U r not here for olympiads... 6) dont waste time learning proofs of everything. U cant do this in 2years Have lots to say....but not possible to write here.🙂

You are absolutely right! Children are not allowed to think independently. Problem solution entails lot of discussion between child and parent/ teacher- and its here the that the independent thinking is stiffled. Parents have their own constraints and teachers their own. Evrn in most of the cases children are discouraged to do so by parents and teachers alike. I was very poor in maths since beginning. But somehow I could fancy that circumference of a circle should be equal to- the length of the circle converted in to a straight line- but neiyher the teachers told this nor I could muster the courage to ask . After retirement, one day to clear my doubt I took a scale & measured a length of thread equal to 5 cms, joined the thread with fevistick , ruoghly made a circle, using the formula mugged up in school , I found myself to be correct. My son studied Mech. Eng. in UK, he was told by an engineer from the same Univ. that in school days they were never taught the Pythagorean Theoram in the class room , rather they were taken out in the open , shown a tree or a pole and asked to measure a angle and distance. This is the how independent thinking is developed.

Actually, in a subsequent video, I have emphasized the importance of practice. Originality is important but that is at a higher level which cannot be reached without first practising. And, this is backed by research by cognitive scientists.

Sir, I am started learning for JEE in mid class 11. I joined FIITJEE. But I enjoyed math so much that I used to complete the chapter and all it's problem before my tuition teacher started teaching in coaching just to show off to other kids. This was before 11th. I didn't like the mugging up style of teaching in FIITJEE. So, I left. I studied on own, although took a drop because I didn't read chemistry, still joined IIT KGP in 2021. BTW I enjoyed your MOS class in 2nd year in 2022.

Just saw the phrase "teaching tricks is the worst thing a teacher can do", well i am urrently in 11th and this is the exact thing that is done in the coaching institute where i go, i couldn't understand the tricks instantly as i tend to keep them in mind only if i practice them two to three times on my own, and then here i am stuck behind all other students in my institute... I agree that problem solving should be done on our own, but what if the problems are too advanced, we will have to rely on the tricks given. Also learning the problem solving skills for JEE on my own would take a very long time as compared to mugging up the tricks taught at the coachings...

In my class 10th an senior class math teacher Started to taight us after half yearly believe me that was the reason we all scored good in maths and some just even passed that might have failed . He said that he dont care about the copy maintaining and he taught the whole concept first and then the examples and then we were the one doing questions alongside.Thats the reason i chose maths in 11th as if he wasnt there we were dead in maths . Also every once in a week when we said sir we dont want to study he said lets talk then, we were talking about our study and he was the one giving us higher knowledge and different strategies or planning how to be disciplined etc.

Thank you. I am not aware of books which can directly help in levelling up problem solving at the 6th or 7th Standards. I suggest that the attitude towards problem solving be changed using the same textbooks the students are using. For this one needs to consciously avoid the practice of somehow finding the solutions from some source. Instead students should sit down unaided and try to think of solving the problem from different approaches. It is definitely going to be a frustrating experience in the beginning. But there is no other way to really learn problem solving. For Standard 9 and 10 there are some good books though. If there any specific suggestions you are looking forward to as a parent, I will be grateful to learn them. I can then think seriously about addressing them.

Although not completely because you know we have limited time to manage all three subjects at once and just after solving examples and all we have already solved about 200 problems. Should i stop attempting illustrations and hop directly onto the back exercises?

Critical thinking is essential for higher order Mathematics. For example, abstract Mathematics which is g loaded iq, the measuring criteria is language and not math performance in aptitude tests. Language performance is the metric for abstract mathematics
