When my child was about 12 we got into roller blading. Nice day we would go out in the street with our roller blades, hockey sticks and a ball. After a while I noticed neighbors coming out and sitting on their porches. I'm sure they were waiting to see me take a tumble. What they didn't know was that I hopped freight trains when I was a kid. What you learn by doing that is that it's easy to get on the train, but it's the jumping off is the hard part. If you wait too long the train gets moving pretty fast. Do that enough times and you perfect the skill of "tuck and roll". Same thing with the roller blades. You learn to head to the grass and tuck and roll if you are going down. I'm 67 years old now and I have never broken a bone. A couple of years ago when my wife and I were riding our bikes in the park I took a turn too fast and my front tire went off the edge of the pavement and stuck in the mud. Sure enough over I went. My wife freaked out and asked me if I was OK. Covered in mud I jumped up with a big smile on my face and said "tuck and roll baby".

Born in 1959 - Did all kinds of these "dangerous" things as a little one: Playing in the back of our Station Wagon (wood paneled) with my brother with pillows flying while Daddy was driving, chasing lightning bugs around the entire neighborhood bare-footed without any thoughts of bullets flying, getting spankings with a belt for misbehaving, caring what my parents thought about "things" I did. The list goes on and on and on! 60 y/o now, and I'd go back to 1959 in a fucking heartbeat if I had the opportunity!

Remember the roller skates that had to be tightened onto your shoes with little key's that were bound to go missing?! I never had bruise or scratch free knees throughout my entire childhood! Lost my fear of falling though - became a pro-climber, which Mom thought was great!!!!!

So apparently, long ago my brother and I contrived with our cousin to build lawnchair forts and have a snowball fight in summer. With croquet balls. I have long been in quiet awe of our survival to driving age, but this particular waltz with the reaper man eluded my memory until a recent reunion. I love my family.

My father was going to the woods to cut firewood, so I hopped on the back of the trailer, and he said hold tight, the first corner we went around i fell off and skinned myself up good, he stopped and said I told you to hold tight, now walk back home and have your mother patch you up. No sympathy or concern at all and to be honest I didn't expect any from dad. It taught you that if you make mistakes, it hurts so be sure not too.

The part were Jeff saids he flew out the back door. My dad when he was 2 years old went out the door while his mother turned the corner. He cracked his skull right above his ear and they had to put a metal plate in his head.

I grew up where you played outside until the lights came on. We rode our bikes and had a blast. My 2 son's had to be watched 24/7 due to perverts and Evil people. Sad too.

so way back when, my dad and mom took me camping down at the Flumes. Now all yall from Carlsbad, NM know exactly where that is and what when on there back when, but i digress. So dad builds a fire for roasting hot dogs on a stick of salt cedar. Roasted marshmallows to to come later. after the dogs, he puts the caped pickle jar into the fire. Yep it exploded, and cut him up pretty bad, so we missed the marshmallow roast, and the overnight. good times

The America that I grew up in your neighbor would smack in the back of the head if you did something wrong and then you go home and get another thumping from your dad. Then you'd be sent 2 GET THE BELT !!! Lock your front door??? WHY?!!!?? Yup, LAWS 2DAY & KIDS CALLING THE POLICE 4 ABUSE !!! Never in our wildest dreams would that thought even enter the mind of a kid back then. And if it had you get a beating for that too how times have changed and not for the better some of them

It's true when I was a kid if you wore your helmet. If you are into skating roller bladinganything like that and you wore protective gear ohmygosh your friends would just literally laugh at you or beat the crap out you Me personally because I have mild cerebral palsyit was more difficult for me to actually learn these things so I really needed the gear because if I fell you know I could really hurt myself. If I was normal no way in hell would I be wearing that crap.
