One of my close friends contracted meningitis which she was a child, Obviously, it was an awful experience, but she's said that the treatment was so painful that it was probably the worst part of the whole ordeal. It started out when she took ill one day with what she and her parents first thought was just a bad flu, but her condition quickly deteriorated and at some point she blacked out and woke up in an ambulance on her way to the ER. When she got there, the drs. diagnosed her with spinal meningitis which was quickly making its way to her brain. In order to halt it, they gave her a lumbar puncture /spinal tap. We are both adults so this was long ago, but she has told me that it was so excruciating, she still remembers as clearly it as if it happened yesterday. Despite the pain, she's still grateful because she knows the spinal tap saved her life and without it she likely would have died in less that 24 hours.

I had aseptic meningitis in 1988 and you feel like your head is going to explode. The time I didn't know why I had it but now I know I had it because I have an autoimmune disease called Sjogren's syndrome. I worked for West Virginia University surgery and Trauma services and thought I had picked up something in the hospital. You are terribly sensitive to light and noise. I worked for The Residency program and they did the spinal tap. You never know how you're going to go but you don't go in a painful way. This would have been very painful. It is sad that he had to go when he was still doing great things. ❤
