Jeff's just easily one of the best voices this planet's ever produced, male or female. So powerful, yet so delicate and tender, so much flexibility, yet his roars are like from a Lion. He's just a must have in any music collection and his loss could be the biggest loss of future music that we've ever seen. You see just how amazing Grace was, imagine the past 25 years worth of music we'd have if he hadn't of died.

The whole album 'Grace' blows you away. Sublime. When he drowned in '97 I was devastated, took a whole week to get out of that funk. Would have loved him to stick around, but at least he gifted us with grace/Grace.

Imo, Jeffs death is the biggest tragedy in the music industry at least the past 30 years - his talents were an unimaginably unique blend of excellent singing ability, guitar playing and great composition skills on top of that, and to think of what he could have released, had he lived past that unfortunate swimming accident. "So Real" is another great track to experience.

I saw and met Jeff the month before he drowned in the river. Of course he had been living in a little rent house in Memphis, working on the material for his next studio album, and has started playing regularly at a total dive bar in downtown Memphis, testing out his new stuff, just him and his guitar. We got in there and had gone to sit in a balcony area (while some really horrible band was on stage before Jeff) to grab a drink. When I turned around to go back Jeff was literally standing in the doorway at the bottom of the stairs I would’ve had to go out of my way not to speak to him. He seemed a little nervous at first: he was a little guy, and I was already taller than him without heels, and he probably thought I was just hitting on him. I told him I wasn’t hitting on him I was there with my husband and a couple other friends to see him that we couldn’t wait for his next album etc. and invited him back to our table until time for him to go on stage. Honestly, the best thing about the whole incident was the look on their faces at my table when they saw who was with me coming back to sit with us!!! 😂 Then a little over a month later, the worst (and most bizarre) news, of Jeff missing and presumed dead in the Mississippi River. I’ve honestly never been more upset over the death of someone I didn’t even really know. That was a bad year (‘97) overall for me in terms of losing favorites: first losing him and then Michael Hutchence in November.

I love seeing people who understand vocal skill reacting to Jeff. I can't sing but I can understand the technicalities and the kind of talent in a voice like that. For me it's not just about his vocal skill (incredible as it was), but it's about his lyrical ability, his guitar skills and the way he could compose music to build up to such an incredible crescendo while matching the power of his voice. He did that a few times on that first album, and it's always amazing to hear. We really lost someone truly special when he passed.

Jeff died while floating in the Mississippi River. He had moved to Memphis to write his masterpiece, and one day him and a friend went down to the river under one of the bridges with a boom box to listen to music and clear their heads. Jeff was floating and his friend was on the bank. A barge was passing and the wake took Jeff under while his friend was turned around and couldn’t hear anything because the boom box was turned up. I am from Memphis and I was often downtown taking in the music scene as I had just turned 21 in 97. My memories of those days aren’t the clearest for many reasons, but I vaguely remember possibly seeing him perform at small bar one night.

This is his best live performance on KZbin. My favourite artist, and his album Grace is still my favourite record since I bought it in ‘94. So much promise and so devastating he never fulfilled his full potential. Grace was an album successful artists of decades could only hope to make, and that was his first… imagine what more he could have achieved. At least we have the demos for what would have been his second album and the live performances. What a treasure; what a loss.

I knew him back in NYC and was able to see him perform many times. I was at the first of the two nights he recorded at Sine on St Marks in east village. Watching your reaction made me appreciate him and his voice all over again. I still remember the night I found out he was missing and presumed drowned in Memphis. RIP JB

@immersion24 Assuming that your story is true, do you know if anyone filmed either or those shows, or any other shows at Sin-e? I know that Merri Cyr filmed Jeff there on 31 December 1994, and Denise Jalbert filmed him there, along with Dorothy Scott, sometime in ‘94 or ‘95.

Merri Cyr is the only person I remember seeing film him at Sine and I don't remember if anyone filmed the nights he was recording there . I do remember that the crowd was overflowing out the door those nights which was a disappointing because the days of just a few people watching him on Monday night were over.

When did you see Merri film Jeff at Sin-e; at that New Year’s Eve show that I mentioned?

@@MojoPin1983 I rarely share anything personal on youtube but made an exception because of this reaction to Jeff. I remember seeing a woman with a camera filming Jeff at SIn-e sometime in the mid 90's and was told who she was. It's been over 25 years so my memory of some of those details aren't great but many of the ones about Jeff are crystal clear. I studied under one of Jeff's managers whose name is George Stein. He invited our class down to see Jeff perform at Sin-e but I think I was the only one from our class who showed up. At some point Jeff came to the class George was teaching. It was a music business course at NYU and I think George wanted Jeff to learn about music label contracts. I also ran into Jeff several times over those mid 90's in NYC as I went to as many shows of his as I could and as it turned out we both lived a block or two apart on E12th street. Like I said, I don't understand people who make things up about meeting people they didn't actually meet. I have more memories of Jeff but I'm not going to share any more here. I just really enjoy seeing people discover him and appreciate him here on youtube.

@@immersion24 It’s possible that the person you’re referring to is Denise Jalbert. She filmed Jeff at Sin-e and the Knitting Factory, and maybe other places, as well. Unfortunately, she is impossible to get in contact with. Perhaps, if you go to her website and click on the ‘About’ section, her photo will refresh your memory. I’d love to see her footage, but she seems to be pretty reclusive and unwilling to talk, unfortunately.

On his recorded version of “Hallelujah”, he holds a note at the end for 24 seconds. I don’t know as a teenager how many times I tried to emulate that and never succeeded, and I used to be a competitive swimmer that could swim 2 laps of a 50m pool underwater. There was and will only ever be one Jeff Buckley. He showed most male singers today that it was ok to sing high. He may have passed on, but his legacy is as strong as Stevie Wonder’s or Prince or MJ

Oh! There’s an amazing episode of Malcolm Gladwell’s podcast “revisionist history” that explains how the song “hallelujah” became so very famous and, spoiler alert, it largely has to do with both the fact that Jeff Buckley performed it so unbelievably and that he died soon afterwards. It’s a great story all the way through though. Leonard Cohen put years of his heart and soul into working on that song, it didn’t find any commercial success until after Jeff.

Though you've likely started researching Jeff, there is a singer whose impact on him echoes in Grace's every note: Nusret Fateh Ali-Khan. He was an adept of qwali, the devotional music of Sufi Islam. Oh... Jeff mastered and used several vibrata; the one you refer to is achieved by "jiggling" the larynx instead of flexing the diaphragm.

I’m always surprised to hear from music professionals and music-lovers that they haven’t heard of Jeff until recently. I was fortunate enough to be living in London in the mid-90s, when his album Grace came out, and so lucky, too, to have seen him in concert twice.
