For everyone who ‘like who cares about race, he’s talented’, people are so focused on the race is bc this type of drum major style is predominantly African American based in HBCU culture, and very unique to our community. More often than not when people participate in parts of the culture, it’s half assed and for their own gain with no respect to the history or its foundations. It great to see another person from a different background/race, interested and doing it full out like it’s supposed to be. You can see the respect and craftsmanship he put into it, which is more than what we can say about others.

Northern Lights an HBCU is a Historically Black College or University. They were founded back in the day during the Reconstruction period, as well as during segregation/Jim crow. African Americans weren’t accepted into educational institutions that were founded by white people for white people, so they made their own. And things likes what you watched spurred from it. *Reconstruction is the period after the Civil War when Republicans of that time and Abraham Lincoln worked on legislation to help African Americans who had just been former slaves get government aid, education, and jobs as well as basic rights they didn’t have before.
@regand78305 жыл бұрын
@@gabriellawhite7225 : Yes, and indeed that was essentially because the former slaves couldn't be shipped back to Africa. Which was something that Lincoln and other office holders considered. Still, the entire of what was to ensure full citizenship and the rights accorded, didn't happen for a while. And compensation for work done without it, never did.

Side note, these kids' work ethic and commitment to their kraft have nothing to with the name of the school. I appreciate your question.
@abflowers15 жыл бұрын
@@mauriceball4608 No disrespect to their work ethic. Yes, the students did not choose the name, but they and the African-Americans living in the district are responsible for keeping the name. It's a classic case of not seeing the forest for the trees. Minimizing the real issues in our community is done by design. Does the 94% of black students know the supremacist history of the name of the school that they represent? I'll take my chances that the 2% know the history of jd.

@@mauriceball4608 In no way am I criticizing the work of the band. I went to a HBCU and I understand the band's vibes. It is noted that we're from different eras. In my lifetime two major events happened with students. In the '60s and '70s, blacks became cognizant of their appropriate reality, and in doing so whites took flight. I can only assume that this is why this school has 2% white student enrollment. I just wonder would a black student have had the opportunity to be a drum major in the '60s and '70s and have had offers of scholarships at the University of Alabama or Auburn. Personally, I am not of the belief that the playing field has become level. Sir, I really appreciate your dialogue and perspective and I have become more knowledgable for it. And the band plays on!

That’s very on point, Agreed. However as a mother (mixed race), whatever it takes to see our children, especially our boys be put out into the public as hard working individuals, and not just classified as thugs, I’ll take it. These kids put forth so much effort into what they do and it shows in their beautiful faces. And having said that, if it saves one life because someone of non color see these videos and look at our children other then thugs and gangsters, it’s a good thing. I have two daughters, one who looks mixed race and the other looks white. If they had been boys, I don’t know what I’d do with the current climate we live in. The daughter who looks white, always is put in a situation of hearing racist remarks, as everyone assumes she is white. She is strong, and calls people out on the dime. I had to call police once for boys who came into our neighborhood and started a fight. The cops came however the boys took off in their truck. Approximately five cop cars pulled onto my front lawn, knocked on my door and were asking what am I trying to pull? As if I’d call them for no damn reason! My daughter who looks white, says let me talk to them, cause I look white! The fact that she has to say some like that made me very sad.

That is not true. Greeks don't get made when others take their letters and use "Greek" life etc. They embrace it as someone accepts our heritage. Maybe where you are from, I never heard any white person say, that's ours, why are they using it. You fail to realize that culture is made to be shared.

The band was good. Remind me of my high school band back in the early 70's.

There is this team that plays out local high school in football. If the game was scored on the marching band performance we would get blown out every time. There band is entertaining like nobody's business

This band is very good for a highschool band. Kudos to the director. I graduated from Clark Atlanta University in 2011 and our band wasn't as good as these kids. Lol

He happens to be bringing attention to a large number of kids that are really working hard doing something positive for themselves and their school. I would really like to see some corporate support by showing these young people, “we see you” and financially helping this program buy new awesome uniforms!
