For everyone who ‘like who cares about race, he’s talented’, people are so focused on the race is bc this type of drum major style is predominantly African American based in HBCU culture, and very unique to our community. More often than not when people participate in parts of the culture, it’s half assed and for their own gain with no respect to the history or its foundations. It great to see another person from a different background/race, interested and doing it full out like it’s supposed to be. You can see the respect and craftsmanship he put into it, which is more than what we can say about others.

Northern Lights an HBCU is a Historically Black College or University. They were founded back in the day during the Reconstruction period, as well as during segregation/Jim crow. African Americans weren’t accepted into educational institutions that were founded by white people for white people, so they made their own. And things likes what you watched spurred from it. *Reconstruction is the period after the Civil War when Republicans of that time and Abraham Lincoln worked on legislation to help African Americans who had just been former slaves get government aid, education, and jobs as well as basic rights they didn’t have before.
@regand7830
@regand7830 5 жыл бұрын
@@gabriellawhite7225 : Yes, and indeed that was essentially because the former slaves couldn't be shipped back to Africa. Which was something that Lincoln and other office holders considered. Still, the entire of what was to ensure full citizenship and the rights accorded, didn't happen for a while. And compensation for work done without it, never did.

As a former member and faculty of an HBCU college band , it’s awesome to see talent that has the passion in their heart. He only stands out because his passion for his gift shows through his commitment to be the best. One can always tell when someone practices to be the best, not just to ‘BE’ ordinary. I wish this young man nothing but the best in his future career in whatever he decides to do.

@@abflowers1 No, it isn't, but none of those students choose the name of the school. It the school that they have to attend that's in their district. It's ironic that he was a confederate leader now the school has an enrollment of 94% black and 2% white. Side note, these kids' work ethic and commitment to their kraft have nothing to with the name of the school. I appreciate your question.
@abflowers1
@abflowers1 5 жыл бұрын
@@mauriceball4608 No disrespect to their work ethic. Yes, the students did not choose the name, but they and the African-Americans living in the district are responsible for keeping the name. It's a classic case of not seeing the forest for the trees. Minimizing the real issues in our community is done by design. Does the 94% of black students know the supremacist history of the name of the school that they represent? I'll take my chances that the 2% know the history of jd.
@mauriceball4608

@@abflowers1 I get it, it's still not on the students. That would be a community coming together to make a change. I live in Indiana and have the option to my son to any school in or out of the district, that may not be the case there. Any rate it still have nothing do with this being a great band with dope drum majors and I will not discredit the talent and the hard work because the name of the school. That's like me staying where you work don't like kittens, but you work hard everyday so I am going to criticize your work ethic because the place you work don't like kittens. One has nothing to do with the other. I appreciate the dialog.
@abflowers1
@abflowers1 5 жыл бұрын
@@mauriceball4608 In no way am I criticizing the work of the band. I went to a HBCU and I understand the band's vibes. It is noted that we're from different eras. In my lifetime two major events happened with students. In the '60s and '70s, blacks became cognizant of their appropriate reality, and in doing so whites took flight. I can only assume that this is why this school has 2% white student enrollment. I just wonder would a black student have had the opportunity to be a drum major in the '60s and '70s and have had offers of scholarships at the University of Alabama or Auburn. Personally, I am not of the belief that the playing field has become level. Sir, I really appreciate your dialogue and perspective and I have become more knowledgable for it. And the band plays on!

This show performance right here is outstanding and I am impressed! As a high school DrumMajor and HBCU marching band alumnist, watching this makes me miss being in the marching band. While it was fun doing shows and always learning new music, it was hard work. If I had the chance to do it all over, I would in a heart beat! The Drum Majors march with excellence and the Drumline is fire. I played all percussion in high school and college and was DM my senior yr. in high school. The percussion section sound like thunder and I really like the drum cadences. The musicians sound really good and I hear every note. Dancers and flag girls add that extra flair when they're still in dance block with the band. Hats off to this band director and the JD high school marching band. You have an old skool fan!✌#FortValleyStateCollege #FVSCBeforeTheU #TheBlueMachineMarchingBand #DeathSquadDrumline🎼🎶🎷🎺

Says a lot about black culture when someone outside the race performs well and gets praise from black people, however, when someone black does something heavily perpetuated by white culture a lot of white people like to ridicule, Serena Williams for example. I'm glad to be a part of a race and culture that encourages people outside of it to do well. Thank you all for giving this man props because he is doing the thing, not because he is white.

That’s very on point, Agreed. However as a mother (mixed race), whatever it takes to see our children, especially our boys be put out into the public as hard working individuals, and not just classified as thugs, I’ll take it. These kids put forth so much effort into what they do and it shows in their beautiful faces. And having said that, if it saves one life because someone of non color see these videos and look at our children other then thugs and gangsters, it’s a good thing. I have two daughters, one who looks mixed race and the other looks white. If they had been boys, I don’t know what I’d do with the current climate we live in. The daughter who looks white, always is put in a situation of hearing racist remarks, as everyone assumes she is white. She is strong, and calls people out on the dime. I had to call police once for boys who came into our neighborhood and started a fight. The cops came however the boys took off in their truck. Approximately five cop cars pulled onto my front lawn, knocked on my door and were asking what am I trying to pull? As if I’d call them for no damn reason! My daughter who looks white, says let me talk to them, cause I look white! The fact that she has to say some like that made me very sad.

That is not true. Greeks don't get made when others take their letters and use "Greek" life etc. They embrace it as someone accepts our heritage. Maybe where you are from, I never heard any white person say, that's ours, why are they using it. You fail to realize that culture is made to be shared.
@philthee04
@philthee04 3 жыл бұрын
@@tedsharpe3010 Didn't say Greek Culture, when referring to black and I white, I'm referring to American, can't speak on anything else. But American history is literally littered with white people being mad at a black person doing something that was for white people. Look at when Jackie Robinson tried to play baseball, or any of the countless blacks that tried their hand at a sport when it was predominantly white and that's just sports. Like I said American history is littered with it. Last I checked there are black Greeks right? So I definitely wasn't referring to that. Let's try not to make something that it's not about. Thank you for trying to troll, have a good day.

@@philthee04 you are making it what it's not. You are making about race. I was making a statement. Don't like it? Oh well. Jackie Robertson was in a different time period. It wasn't right. What about when a white person that had dreads, a black "professor"trolls him about his dreads. Just shut up and let people share culture. Just that easy.

Okay, I've watched a number of these videos, and finally got his name .... Mr. Xavier Jackson. A natural born dancer, he is smooth as silk, and shines in every video. I am a huge fan. He is one of those who makes me ever proud of our heritage and traditions. Kudos to all the kids who are all excellent. Their focus and dedication is apparent.
