WATCH THE FULL DOCUMENTARY TONIGHT HERE: • JEFFERY: Young Thug fr...
The 11Alive exclusive ‘Jeffery’ series unravels the high-profile grand jury indictment of Atlanta rapper Jeffery Williams, better known as Young Thug. We explore the impact of the controversial indictment, which alleges that his prominent record label, YSL, is allegedly connected to street gang activity, according to Fulton County prosecutors.
The recent events reignited a decades-long conversation about the use of rap lyrics in courtrooms across the country, the movement to protect Black art, and the precedent this case could set.
As this notorious case nears a trial date, 11Alive’s ‘Jeffery’ series gives an exclusive lens into what this case means - legally, artistically and culturally. And where do the lines blur between art and reality?
11Alive is Where Atlanta Speaks. We believe that news shouldn’t be a one-way conversation, but a dialogue with you. Join in, share your thoughts and connect with new perspectives.

He’s a great spokesman and controller of the narrative in the public eye but trust me…he’s not a top 5, top 10, or even top 20. Criminal defense attorney. Young Thug needed Alan Dershowitz (Oj lawyer) or Jose Baez (Aaron H. Lawyer) or David Bois (Jerry Jones lawyer for his NFL players) but all these top tier guys cost a minimum of 7-10 million at least because of their power behind the scenes. This guy can control the front line but can’t do the dirty work necessary to get a Not Guilty. RIP Thug

The thing about being a lawyer especially for high profile celebrities is that you have to lie and you have to lie to yourself and to the courtroom just to win the case for your client. This interview opens up with his regards on the use of lyrics in rap music being used in court. Everything that he's saying is in favor of his client (Young Thug) and not necessarily how he genuinely feels.

He's spot on about the use of lyrics/art as evidence. Imagine being a horror movie director and every time you're in court, your movies are being used to judge your character.
@698alimo
@698alimo Жыл бұрын
Your analogy is very flawed. This issue with some rap lyrics is with "self snitching". Some rap songs use real names or nicknames and events that can be used to narrow down on real evidence. Good rap is authentic. Artists who are rapping about fiction are usually brought to light as "posers", fake, wannabes. Horror movies, and books are clearly fiction (or based on true events that were already public).
@KRiZZxTV
@KRiZZxTV Жыл бұрын
@@698alimo No, your logic is flawed: First of all “clearly” is a subjective term. So you could also say most music is clearly fictional, like movies, regardless of whether it’s BASED on a true story. Thank you for using that word(based) because based on a true story does not = confession/self-snitching. Not to mention most modern rappers/artists have multiple writers. Art is just an expression of thought.. aka speech. It’s protected under the 1st Amendment of the US Constitution. I encourage you to educate yourself on the importance of the U.S. constitution.

I agree. I don’t think it should be admissible, otherwise where does it end? Should they arrest Eric Clapton for “shooting the sheriff”? Should they start investigating the guys in cannibal corpse for the hundreds of violent crimes they talk about committing in graphic detail? No. I think the problem is (not racism) that rap presents itself as “real life” storytelling, and uses real names of people and places… it’s hard not to read some of it as a confession. Nonetheless, I don’t think it should be admissible go get some real evidence!

Let's be honest and make this moment one to look at our community in the mirror once and for all. Crime is wrong all day. If he( Young Thug) did something wrong he should face the full strength of the law. Black people should help the state deal with criminals and murderers. Why defend a murderer? But I want people like Vlad and Jews in particular to keep quiet because they are not black and in some way are part of the problem.

Lyrics are a work of FICTION!! Now, if you tell a story that gives them a trail to follow and they find ACTUAL EVIDENCE against you, THAT EVIDENCE is fair game. But the lyrics themselves are not admissable imo! It's artistic expression! Freedom of speech!!
