A new run of U.S. made pocket knives! Will this company's branding mis-step cost them? Weed & Co.

After an exciting introduction email by C. Risner Cutlery, I was excited to see that the old Queen Cutlery factory equipment will soon be back in action making U.S. production pocket knives again, after being bought by Cooper Cutlery of Winchester, Ohio.
This run of Weed & Co. knives borrow the name of the vintage hardware store based in Buffalo, NY from days of yesteryear.
I have a red jigged bone trapper to share with you, and we will compare it to a Chinese production Kissing Crane in the same pattern.
Either way, if you are a fan of traditional pocket knives, the thought of new U.S. made Schatt and Morgan knives on the market is compelling. I had no idea that this run of Weed & Co. knives would be so divisive. Where do you weigh in on the issue?

Great video and I appreciate the shoutout! As many have already commented, it is a marijuana leaf on this run of Weed&Co knives. I look forward to better quality from Cooper Cutlery when they begin producing the Schatt&Morgan Cutlery line.

If you think the “weed” sign is problematic, just wait for the “schatt” emblem.

Okay, I'm probably in a small sub-set of knife enthusiasts, but I'm a big fan of Canadians and Maple Syrup--I bought one mostly for the leaf.

People relax, he does not actually think it’s a maple leaf. “I’m okay with the Canadians” and “I don’t enjoy maple syrup myself” 100% referring to weed. Mentioning weed, alcohol, or Tabacco can limit your suggested videos by KZbin. Good video man!

I was not aware of this company so thank you for giving them attention. Hopefully we will see another American Knife company find success in the marketplace.

I gave up on GEC as their production is inadequate to the demand, and seems maybe purposeful to drive up demand, I said seems, not definitely so. Either way I don't even bother and that leaves another drooling sap to hunt for them. In my day in age, I'm not hunting for any pattern I can find available. I want a particular pattern/knife, I order it, not available I move on to next brand.

I think it’s kinda crafty using the leaf with the Weed brand name . I wish I’d bought one last year when there was the cover material that I wanted still available . Even being a little rough around the edges , I’d feel like I’m helping get the company off the ground and on to reviving another American made slippy . Hopefully the effort here doesn’t go down in flames .

You know I love traditional pocket knives a lot. I have many GECs (favorite), case knives, rough Ryder’s, Boker, and I was excited to hear about the weed & co. Being made with Schatt Morgan equipment, but taking one look at that shield turned me off forever :/ Maybe it’s shallow, but hey I love traditional knives in every way that means. Hence love for GEC. I thought it was a weed leaf… I guess I was very uninformed. It looks nothing like a maple leaf. Anyway just because of the shield I was never going to consider buying these Weed & co. Knives… But now that I know it’s a maple leaf I’ll reconsider and keep my eye open for different shields. Anyway- just a perspective from another traditional pocket knife lover.

Just bought the last green jigged bone Hunter at SMKW. I don’t smoke, and think the shield is a disgrace to Mr. Weed, but wanted to get their first production model as a start of a potential Schatt & Morgan collection.

Hmmm. I’m glad to see another maker of trad knives. But I think they should have waited to release any knives until the quality was better. I’m a traditional knife fan and okay with the leaf shield, but not impressed so far.

The Weed & Co. logo is printed on the main blade, so you see that and the marijuana leaf shield together when the knife is open. I am a bit surprised it’s not also labeled “Model 420” at the base of the blade.🙄

Why 440 stainless,why not 1095 carbon,you can get a knife with 440 for much less than that, it doesn't make sense. I do appreciate the video , very informative. Thx

If you want a relatively inexpensive high quality knife buy a Victorinox , if your needs are simple & its mostly a blade that you need & not a a lot of other tools , buy a 91mm Spartan or a larger 111mm Picknicker

I don't see a point in high end knives. I'd rather see someone to compete with Buck and Case... Knives in the $50 range. Case needs competition to up their game. The problem is that Rough Ryders and Brother knives make inexpensive knives that rival much more expensive US made knives. I won't buy a knife just because it's made in the US. It has to reflect better quality at a fair price. GEC only gets half of that right. This one looks kind of sloppy. I'd rather buy a Rough Ryder for $20 than this one. I'd get a better made knife.
@CoyoteEDC
@CoyoteEDC 2 жыл бұрын
Quality is important. #1 even. But there are many who value items made here in the USA. Good quality in this country means skilled labor making it and a higher price as a result. If Case ups their game, I would expect the prices to go up commensurately. In China, skilled labor is cheaper, so we can get an awesome $20 knife, whereas the same knife made in the USA would have to cost $100. Economics is a punch in the gut.
@StephenWorth
@StephenWorth 2 жыл бұрын
@@CoyoteEDC Buck maintains high quality standards by incorporating cutting edge technology and introducing new styles. They sell overpriced collectors’ knives like GEC, but they also make $55 knives with the same quality. The problem with Case is that they are resting on their reputation and nostalgia. Buck faced the same competition and succeeded at overseeing inexpensive import knives, producing high quality midrange knives, and specialty Buck of the Month designs to compete with GEC. SMKW is brilliantly leveraging quality Chinese manufacture to make a wide range of low cost quality knives. Ultimately, entry level knives are the ones that bring new collectors into the market. I support that.

Good review! Mostly. This looks like Chinese knife. Some brands put headquarters location on the stamp (Ohio) trying to deceive us. They put USA on the tang, when it’s made here. Gaps on the back springs. Thick and bulky, non ergonomic handle reminds me Rough Rider Reserve - knives made to look at, not to use. Thick behind the edge, like most Chinese knives. Not quite Case quality (although, they were dropping the ball too lately :(

"Thick behind the edge, like most Chinese knives." The last 3 Chinese knives I bought are .008"bte, .0135" and .015"bte, thinner than almost every knife I've ever received from any country. Stedemon Frida, Maxace Killer Whale 2, SMKE Trapper It takes a hell of a brush (and a good amount of ignorance) to paint such an absurdly large country with one stroke.

Case has earned themselves a reputation for hit or miss quality control. That's just how it is. Not that I really said or implied any of that in the video... The only mention of Case was a straight up quote from the Risner Cutlery website.
