I needed something to do to stay active and I went and got a bike to MTB. Then I also got a hybrid to ride around town or long distance. I feel great and I haven't been in this great a shape in a long time

Jeff, just want to say thank you for your content on the channel. I have become a huge fan of this bike. I am the winner of the #ridesaferidesolo HD5 frame that Ibis did back in March/April. I worked with Ibis and turned it into a complete build (just paid the difference). Let’s just say, it does it all. At 47 years old, I can get around faster, soak up the downhills of westerns North Carolina and even going to run it on a gravel grinder race in October just because. Watching your videos is awesome. The way you get into the details for riding techniques have made me and my son better riders. Thanks again, -Scott

As always, great video! Glad you're back on the trail!! First of all, I love Ibis! These bikes are confident inspiring and pedal so freakin' well up and down! I've owned a V1 Ripley and now own a V1 Ripmo. Now, as much as I love these bikes they do frustrate me sometimes. Most notably the creaking. My Ripley was notorious for it. Always hard to pinpoint. Now I got a Ripmo. I bought this at the start of the Pandemic. It's been dead silent since owning it until recently. It usually creaks under power ( when climbing) like my Ripley. Without pulling anything apart, I checked the torque on the eccentrics and other contact points; everything seemed to spec. I had a brake issue and had to take it to my LBS and they wound up fixing the brake issue, tightening my hub, and deraileur. I suspected it was the drivetrain. So today, I went for a ride and it keeps creaking. Eventually, I'll track it down. I know I'm not the only one that experiences creaking with Ibis bikes ( according to the FB groups..LOL), but I wonder if Carbon frames are more prone to creaking? ( not just an Ibis thing). I've kicked the idea around of switching to an Alloy frame. While I could live with some creaking, too much is ridiculous especially on long climbs. I will look into that Shimano E-thru axle! On a recent ride, mine got loose too!

@JeffKendallWeed4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jedidiah, if your nephew is a newer rider I'd say the BEST starter bike would be a 27.5 hardtail, followed by a 29 hardtail, followed by 27.5 fs, then lastly, 29er fs. The smaller wheels encourage better technique, as does a hardtail. I started on a 26" hardtail, and credit that to a big part of how I got as far I did with the racing stuff.
@greganderson96184 жыл бұрын
Great job Jeff.. I LOVE my HD5. The 27.5 apologetics hardly seem necessary though :). I went from 26" to 29".. through 2 different frames (banshee phantom & trans. smuggler) determined to make it work and never bonded with the handling. I even demo'd a Ripmo for a weekend before I got the HD5 as the internet claimed it was THE shit-hot modern 29er.. not for me. I could not escape the tendency (at least not in a 2 day demo) for the front wheel to tuck under/push during quick direction changes. That said, I am shorter at 5'7" and suppose I fit into the aging bmx'er category... never raced officially but my Webco served me well growing up.

Been on an HD5 since earlier this year. I float between 160 and 165 pounds and have had a little love/hate thing with the traction tune. I dont have the fox factory version of the dpx2 shock (no lsc or hsc adjustments) and so it's taken time to adjust...I'm still on the fence about changing the shock, while the fork seems fine with the light tune. It's a good fit for me as I like to pop and play down the trail and being the fastest isn't my goal. Your review is very accurate imho! Rad riding as always JKW!
@AndrewBeveridge4614 жыл бұрын
Not sure exactly what you'd be looking to change about it, but I have a Ripmo V1 with a similar DPX2 (no compression control apart from the 3-way lever) and recently swapped the 0.4 volume reducer for a 0.6. It made a big difference. I weigh about 175 and like to pop and get off the ground. Previously the shock would blow through travel really quickly unless I pumped it up to a pressure that made it harsh and skiddy in the rear. I just got back from riding 3 days at Trestle Bike Park out in CO, plus one day on a techy, rocky DH trail in Indian Peaks (S. St Vrain Trail). I only bottomed out 2 or 3 times over the whole trip, but routinely was getting through about 80% of the travel. Perfect. I considered a shock swap for something I could dial in a bit of compression damping, but gave the volume reducer a shot. Glad I did - $20 for a spacer kit is a heck of a lot better than $300 for a used X2 or double that for something new.

@JeffKendallWeed4 жыл бұрын
Hey Bullseye, great question. I don't ever set up suspension for jumping. I set it up for landing. The nose diving effect is happening because your pump on the take off is either nonexistant or not timed properly. Head to a local pump track, where it's safe to try some small jumps, and practice pushing down and preloading (which is what I mean by pumping) at various spots before the take off. You'll find that preloading early will lead to less height but more distance. Preloading later means more height and less distance. Hope that helps!
@bullseye01124 жыл бұрын
@@JeffKendallWeed helps a ton, I think it's a timing issue. On the larger jumps with no pumping it flys straight and level, it seems only when I preload the fork, do I experience nose heaviness.. so would that be timing or my settings are off. Jeff I’ve watched several video’s on the HD5 and everyone mentions to some degree that the bike is slow. What would you say the key reason for this is? Wheel size? Suspension? Thanks
@JeffKendallWeed4 жыл бұрын
Hey man, the "slow" feeling is in regards to flatter sections of trail. It's a combo of geometry and wheelsize. If you are standing up, you can manipulate the bike a lot more to avoid losing speed, but it's going to take more oooomph than a 29er will. This is also why I mention the HD5 is better in mountains than flatter areas. It's not that big of a deal by any means, but if your riding buddies are all on short travel 29ers, you might notice it.

Ha! Thanks man! Hmm, well Ripmo is more of an all arounder. It'll feel quicker on flats on most tech climbs. The HD5 will be fun on the jumpy stuff and if you want to be super active.

I hate how everyone just poops on 27.5” every chance they can. Even if they say good things they make sure to twist it in a way it’s still a dig at them. Maybe I’m just sour because I just finished building up a 27.5” and everyone makes it seem like it was a waste of money. I love it, fits me well. I won’t be finding it’s limits anytime soon. So I guess I can shut up too. /rant.

I’m an aging skateboarder, but seems the style of riding is very close to “aging bmxer”. So this would totally work well for me! I’ve been riding a ton this summer. So much. I keep breaking hangers and derailleurs (on my 4th one since May). But that’s better than breaking myself! Been there waaaaay too many times.
@JeffKendallWeed4 жыл бұрын
Hahahaha Dennis that's awesome! BMXers and skateboarders can FINALLY get along- in mid-life, on MTBs!! Sorry ot hear about your derailleur, wonder if that's a set up issue (too long or short chain?).

Up until a month ago I was still rocking 26". Sadly my bike got stolen out of my garage. I tried a friends 27.5 and it felt huge so not sure Il be able to get used to it.

The Ripmo seems to be the bike of my dream, the v1 is trail bike of the year 2020, the v2 is improved on progressivity. Just bought a Trance Advanced 1, but starting to dream about the Ripmo XD

Why not a float x2

Ethan, the X2 is a great shock, but it's a tad overkill for my riding. I've found myself doing much less big mountain riding, so I don't really need the massive oil volume. I like the way the DPX2 feels. It seems as though the lighter internal valving, fewer circuits, and overall smaller volume of oil reacts faster to impacts, creating a more "free" feeling suspension. I've grown to really like that light feel.

Jeff Kendall-Weed Same for me, I got my DPX2 dialed in on my Ripmo way better than the X2.

Fair enough! I was in that boat for a while. Then I got my 29er more dialed (bigger tires, over forked it) and hurt myself. Now I'm OK with the mellow 29 feel!

Better be careful. I had a relative die from a simple mtn. bike crash. And he didn’t even know he was fatally injured. Walked away and died days later.

@@JeffKendallWeed Thanks. It sure is. Worst part is he knew something was wrong and went to doctors several times - all of which ignored him. He had punctured internal organs from a crash when the handlebar rammed into his side. Dead a few days later.

bananas stuff he was riding on a mountain trail and crashed. The handlebar slammed into his side and punctured multiple organs. He went to the doctor several times but they just ignored him and sent him home. He died a few days later.
