Hey there,
In this video I take a look at the U shaped air Conditioner by Midea. This is their 8000 btu unit and was purchased for $339.00. (Not $399). typically the room I installed the AC in has a temperature into the 80s. I set the AC at 70 and placed a thermostat across the room. the thermostat reads at 71 - so I am pretty impressed. in 30 days I'll do a follow-up review.

Great review, I like the thought of the U shaped for a few reasons. Most importantly to keep the bugs and critters out since your window can actually close most of the way and it seems like it would be more energy efficient. Congrats on the 19k+

It's a variable speed compressor. It doesn't slam on like a cheap AC unit. It ramps up to running speed so it is inherently quieter.

That's actually the inverter technology. If you really like that any air conditioner with inverter technology would act at the same. It's part of why it costs more money and also the main reason it's so much more energy efficient

Back in the 1970's thru 80's, ComfortAire of Jackson Michigan made an even better version of this style window air conditioner. It could be installed in either up/down sash windows like yours OR side -sliding windows. That's because the two sections were only connected at one bottom corner instead of all the way across on this Midea. Very quiet units .

Great video! Appreciate your posting it. Mine is being delivered in 2 days and this will be a big help. I'm going to be installing this unit into a fixed opening that a glass block window came out of (basement). I'll be using a 1" insulated aluminum panel at the top. My plan is to cut the panel to size and slide everything in at one time once the support bracket is installed. Wood stops will be used around the perimeter and then covered with metal capping. Once installed I won't be removing it. At least that the plan. We'll see if this works . Thanks again. Very well done.

Hi! Thank you for guiding us through the installation process. Question? I bought one yesterday for a regular window. The window space is 30 x 21 1/8 inches. An old air conditioner was in that space. My idea is I can cover the sides with concrete bricks and tight the space to the most closest dimensions. I can install the brackets outside very easily and instead of the window place pvc panel in there. What do you think? Thank you.

Very well done review and I like the way you tried to explain the installation instructions. It is a more complicated setup/ installation that most, probably will not attempt. After creating a frame, with an acrylic window, to install a vertical ac cube in a horizontal window(in a rented home) hands down, this would have been the easier option that I had no clue even existed!! I would love a $5.000 Main AC repair, one of mine was $16,000. Found out that is typical for a 20 year old unit due to all the Freon chemical changes. Right after one of two of mine (lower floors) was repaired, the second one for the top floor went out. I have been doing without, heat rises so winters have not been a problem yet. I purchased the 12,000 BTU and was looking for some good video's on it. I would like to have seen on where the shelf legs where sitting on the roof top. My first roof line is very near the bottom of the brick window sill I probably only have an couple of inches and it is roof flashing. Hopefully I can cut the legs to fit. Looks like I will be cutting the extension shelf off to be more of a custom fit for that outside unit. Some of my neighbors probably won't like me having a window unit showing on the front of my house either... Thanks for the video.

Sorry to chime in on you with our Midea AC problems. We Love our two 10k BTU U-shape AC's. Don't know about all that other positive talk about the product. The AC's worked just fine the 1st time we set them up with the Midea android app on our 2.4Ghz Wifi. One Year later, 2021, we upgraded our phones & reloaded the apps hoping all was ok. Not so. Neither two of our Model No.: MAW12V1QWT U-Shape AC's are working with the Android APP. The app will not save the detected AC's configuration to the App. So we contacted tech support. As suggested by their tech support we’ve tried the Midea app & their newer MSmartLife App as an alternative work around, as recommended by them, for our Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy S21. All having the latest updates and no OS older than Android 10. But the app goes thru its paces during the setup & when it gets to 99% for the "Phone Reconnect portion", it freezes every time for about 2 minutes and then throws us to an unsuccessful error redirecting us to the Midea help tips, of which do not work for our case so far. Can anyone Help? Has anyone else seen this gotten this corrected?

Im hesitant to cut all my foam up ... if it doesnt fix the squeal inside house, cuz ill return it if I cant get rid of the squeal. I wish they would have made it a non inverter unit, because I believe thats whats generating the squeal ... I dont recall ever hearing that in a non inverter AC unit.

I installed mine today in my third floor apt, I have vintage thick brick walls but newer windows. It was not hard at all, take the measurements if it fits you should be ok. Honestly the hardest part for me was leaning out the window getting those feet right but I did dry fits a few times, set them to the 18 position inside and then mounted the bracket and moved them to the 17 position it took about five minutes. You missed a few steps The important one so you don't get mold in your ear conditioner is to make sure you put a level on those two bars before you put the AC in the window make sure it's level but then slightly tilting backwards so the water goes backwards because if you don't the water will be level it won't drain out it'll come towards the front and the fan will blow the moisture in through the system and get mold all over the front grill in the fan on the inside portion of the house. THAT'S A HUGE STEP YOU NEED A LEVEL

So looking at the bad reviews on both the Soleus and Midea I'm concerned. The Soleus has a drain plug that needs to be emptied a lot and leaks when it's full. I had a Sears slide in unit. You installed the box just like you'd install a regular air conditioner except the box is hollow, no air conditioner inside. Once the box is in you slide the air conditioner into it. It didn't have any outside supports. My condo is stucco outside and they don't want any support bars leaning on it. I didn't need them with the other unit, do I have to use them with this unit? If I re-enforce the frame or stand it sits on, on the inside of the window and maybe put a board outside on the bottom of the window so the stand sits on it and I close the window on it and put the locks that will hold the window down, will it work? I already bought the unit and I'm waiting for it to get here. I'm going to do it anyway but what do you think?
@Jeffreviews4u

Yes, you will absolutely need the supports. Otherwise the unit couldn't support itself. I did a review of another type and that one wouldn't need a support platform. check it out here if interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6LXhGp-ltJ7eZo

One thing I would have done is to move the 2 support brackets outward 1 or 2 holes so that the support pads would contact the siding in an area where it would not crush it.

Moving the support bracket pad legs in or out changes the tilt angle of the AC. The AC should only be tilted slightly down for condensation drainage.

Per the manual the min window opening height is 13.75". This allows for a direct slide in installation from the interior. I have a opening of 8.5" with ground floor exterior access. Do you think it is possible to 'tip' the unit (to get under the 8.5" height) from the exterior to facilitate an install?

In theory you could tip in from the outside; my concern is the opening of the AC isn't wide enough to fit both sashes. Also, is there a 2nd form of egress? You want to make sure not to block an exit.

Looks good! How well does it maintain temperature? Unless it’s an optical illusion, it looks to me like the outside unit is sloping down. Most units say they are supposed to be level, however this may not be the case with yours. Last, I would move the stops on the back of the rack to tight against the unit, then cut off the excess. Give us an update after you’ve used a while. Thanks, Jeff!

@Jeffreviews4u
@Jeffreviews4u 3 жыл бұрын
in my opinion it all depends on what you put you room temperature on...the btu number is how much heat can be removed...more btus the quicker it takes the heat out. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

I wonder if they could also design one thats completely separate like a split system...🤔 Have it run through a 6 to 12ft hose...that way you can drill a hole through a wall instead of having it in a window...

I have the same problem. I do not like the way the bracket sticks out like that. They should make it where it’s adjustable. It goes in and out. I think it’s really an eyesore. Why would they even make it like that where it sticks out like that it just looks really weird. Wish I could change mine.

Quick question for you sir, do you think there is enough gap between the AC and the window for a screen that slides to fit in there as well? Well it seems like the AC is a hit because I was just looking at a new AC for my house and I saw this crazy design for an ac that doesn't take of space and allows for more light into the room because of the U shaped design. But it seems like everyone is getting this AC because its out of stock practically everywhere.

@@Jeffreviews4u i'm excited for it. We have a small vacation place and current air is 220 unit in front window from prior owners (they were trying to heat with it also) that is like a tank running in the LR and the front porch (and extending to front porch just eats up space). Anyway this new one is going into a side window which frees up the porch and being so silent.. well I expect a big positive impact. Thank you for your awesome instructional video
