If you want to react to another good science fiction, I recommend: SUNSHINE with Cillian Murphy and Chris Evans, directed by Danny Boyle, basically it is about the sun is going out, and that is causing the agony of the earth, and a mission is prepared in a special ship that will go to the sun, to leave a nuclear bomb of the most powerful in history, to explode it in the sun, to revive it and make it shine again as always.

It was also during his peak couch-jumping, "Tom Cruise is crazy" era... combined with a trailer that went too far in explaining what was going on. Great movie, and also a lot of things around it that didn't go right.

An insane behind the scenes detail: to make the house look like it was in the clouds, they sent a film crew to the top of a mountain for a month to film a 360° view of the sky at all times of day and weather conditions. Then they built the house a few feet off the ground on a sound stage and surrounded it with a 42' tall by 500' long projection screen and used 21 projectors to fill that screen with the footage they took on top of that mountain. It had to have been a nightmare to get all those projectors working properly, but the results are stunning.

Visually (And audibly) STUNNING. They actually built the "Bubble Ship" with Tom's input as a pilot. They had a full scale ship built, with working motorized doors, and rotating engines, as well as a mock up cockpit that actually spun on all three axis, so during the chase scene when you see the Seat Belt harnesses flapping around due to G Forces (or the actresses hair), That is really the actress and Tom in the 3D movement cockpit. Tom:: "Are you okay ?" Julia: "No !?!?!?!?!" Yup, that was the actresses reaction to being flung around in her chair.

Tom Cruise make sure when he is piloting the aircraft in the movie that the piloting was realistically simulated . Everything he does was accurately portraits(most of the time). Even the ways he was handling his Rifle. He is just an perfectionist with little bit of an death wish. Respect 100% for his passion and love for his dream job.

One last thing.... The "Chrysler Building" as you called it, is actually the Empire State Building. I know this because I had a 3D puzzle of it when I was a kid, and the top piece(which is what you see in the film), kept falling off of it. Also the fact that they were selling King Kong plushies points to it being the Empire State Building. 🤓

I loved this movie, its always been in my list of favorites. The movie was pretty much written just for Tom Cruise and the set was built surrounded with a massive screen that they projected 360 degree video shot from on top of a mountain to build the skies. They had to do that because the surfaces were so reflective it was the only way to make it look real was to get everything in the reflections. The actress who played Julia was legitimately terrified when in the craft, it was on a gimbal and really did spin and turn upside down while filming. The behind the scenes are definitely worth watching. If I recall, the actress that played Victoria hated it, it was apparently a very lonely and isolating experience for her.

All of those are bad except Alita. Soldier is boring. I actually fell asleep in the theater during that, the first and only time I have ever done that. Stealth is just plain dumb. Stealth iss the worst kind of hacky 2000's action/science fiction film. Ender's Game is a soulless adaptation that got everything wrong, including the ages of the kids. Alita is fun, underrated, a really nice movie. It also has a female lead character done right, in a time when that was (and is) all too rare.

This movie really took me by surprise. It was so good. Yeah, some schmalz but not too much. But it's really the audio of the movie that sells it. I loved the sound effects of the drones, for instance. And M83's score is really good. The closing theme also called "Oblivion" which features Norwegian singer Susanne Sundfør is soooo good. Something about that French horn holding those looong drawn notes just spoke to me. It was also covered by Dutch singer Floor Jansen with a more metal arrangement and that one also works really well. Worth checking out, Jen. Great reaction. That jaw drop when you recognised Morgan Freeman's voice was the highlight for sure. :) Looking forward to the next one.

This movie has some brilliant and subtle foreshadowing, particularly around the Drones - they make these weird, alien noises and are blatantly programmed to target humans, as evidenced by the drone targeting Jack before he tells it that he's a Technician. The relationship between Vika and Jack has an uncanny quality... even their picture doesn't look quite right but we don't realize it until we see the staging of the original later in the movie. Everything about the Tower, Vika and Jack, Sally, the Drones, and the Tet is meant to produce a feeling that things aren't right, and most viewers get suckered into thinking that it's not intentional.

Anyway - I think this film is quite underrated! Especially given the really good soundtrack thanks to M83. And I thought the appropriate inclusion of one of the more famous passages from the classics was actually genius. The end credit track is in my favorites playlist! Oh and just for everyone who doesn’t understand basic geometry. “Tet” was short for Tetrahedron (the 4 sided Platonic solid) perhaps the most basic 3D symmetric shape in existence found in pretty much every crystal structure in one way or another but that’s actually an extremely complex topic. The point being it wasn’t just a random nickname!

Forgot all about this movie. It’s pretty wild and I agree, this needs to be a video game. It’d be so cool flying around, landing and scouting out places on a post-apocalyptic Earth like this. It kind of reminds me of Death Stranding with the landscapes

This and 'Day after tomorrow' are not only some of the best Science Fiction in the last few decades, not to mention Tom Cruise at his peak; good stuff!

It's funny you asked "why isn't this a video game", because back in 2013 people seemed to want to trash this movie for some reason, and one of the things I remember hearing as a negative, was that it felt more like a video game than a film... Movie critics can be so lame sometimes, and the way this movie was disregarded and bashed when it came out, made me very sad and confused.

I saw this film at the cinema when it first debutted-WOW-what a movie-going experience. The CGI,cinematography, atmosphere and special effects were the BEST I'd ever seen in a sci-fi film at that time. The story was okay.

Great film. It all works out in the end. But you have to feel for Vicka (Victoria). She loved him when he was married, then got him when they were a team, only to lose him again. All she wanted was to live with him in her own paradise.

Joseph Kosinski directed this movie, he would later go on to make _Top Gun: Maverick_ Another film he did you need to check out is his directorial debut, _Tron Legacy._ Sequel to the 1982-Classic _Tron,_ I also recommend.

Oblivion is one of my comfort movies, easy to have on while I work or when I just want to chill out with a movie. One interesting bit, I'm from Maui and they filmed a lot (all?) of the shots around the Sky Tower at the summit of our mountain, Haleakala. So for a lot of the shots where you see a beautiful sunrise or skyline around that tower, that's an actual place you can go visit :)

This film feels like it was based on a classic science fiction novel but it's not. Possibly the most underappreciated science fiction movie ever, it should be recognised as a classic of it's genre.

That is an excellent point you brought up in your reaction Jen. I had not caught that in all the times I have seen the movie. When Jack 49 went back to 52's home to get medical supplies, how did Vikka 52 not notice the 49 on Jack's uniform. I also just check the movie myself and found in addition to the numbers on the uniforms, the digits and Tet logo are blue on Jack 49. They are gold or yellow on 52's uniform. Either they missed that in post production, or Vikka just doesn't notice details like that. Which would be strange because she is a mission controller.

RE: The Crazy ending; See also the OG "Dune" series of novels which feature a thing called a *Ghola* which is the resurrected clone of a key character found early in the Narrative. Eventually we come to discover that the clone is potentially *perfect* including all memories of the person who provided the original cells. Overall, I think I liked this film better than "Annihilation" and many other post-apocalyptic sci-fi thrillers of the same period.

I don't think I ever noticed how much of the robot / futuristic aesthetic in this movie is also present in the video game No Man's Sky. There are also some story similarities, but the story of NMS is far more mind-blowing lol. I wouldn't go so far to say that they're similar experiences, but I think you'd really enjoy playing it, Jen. It's a very open-ended game with endless variation.
