2 things: 1. I'm surprised you didn't catch the reference when Vesper said "I'm the MONEY" and Bond replied with "Every PENNY of it" 2. In previous Bond movies, the game of choice was Baccarat, but the producers of this movie changed in to poker because they figured more people could follow it.

@@cockshield I definitely think they had some chemistry, just a little more laid back and quieter than his Vesper relationship, like two introverts who got together. 25:45 The martini that Bond orders in this scene is the exact recipe that Bond orders in the original book Casino Royale by Ian Fleming. While Lillet (a type of aperitif) is still made, Kina Lillet (which Bond specifies, so named because it contains quinine) no longer does, having been reformulated in 1985, so to have Bond request it in 2006 is anachronistic but clearly a loving wink & nod to the novel.
@Cheepchipsable Жыл бұрын

Other similarities, Le Chiffre had lost a bunch of his client's money (the client in the book being the Soviet organisation Smersh, or Smiert Spionam, meaning death to spies). And Vesper killed herself in the end leaving a suicide note confessing to being a spy. Bond's words "The bitch is dead" is the very last sentence of the book.
@tropicalcatdetective Жыл бұрын
I feel like you accidentally left one last little bit of info out about the drink, Bond in the film says off-handedly to Vesper “I’ll have to think of a name for that.” The cocktail recipe that Fleming wrote into the novel became referred to as The Vesper or a Vesper Martini when people ordered it in real life after the book was out.

When I make mine I use 100 proof vodka and add a dash of angostura bitters to more closely replicate some of the old Kina Lillet bitter flavour. It's a strong drink.

Did you notice that the official James Bond theme never played until the final scene. When he introduces himself to Mr White. Throughout the film we see young James make mistake after mistake & he never introduces himself in his iconic fashion. James is young & more of a blunt object rather than a precise surgical killing machine. The Director did that intentionally with the music at the end. To show the audience that after Vesper’s death, now, James finally has become the man/agent we all know. He finally becomes James Bond, hence the music playing in full & the proper introduction.

The man Bond was chasing who was "parkouring all over the place", Sebastian Foucan, was on the _original_ parkour team alongside Parkour's founder, David Belle. He is credited with inventing the term "free running" as well (though that made him controversial with most people in the parkour world as nobody really thought of it as a seperate discipline, just as a seperate subset of the discipline with a slightly different but muddy philosophy. They likened it to just a marketing tactic).

Casino Royale is such a fantastic film, not just one of the best in the series, but legitimately one of the best action films ever made, and exactly what was needed after the over-the-top excess of Die Another Day. It's fantastically well-written and unique in its structure, devoting the entire midsection to a poker game, having the villain be killed off way before the end of the film, and instead making the third act a big tragic romance. Bond and Vesper have one of the best relationships in the series, you truly buy their chemistry and believe in their romance to such an extent that, despite this blatantly being Bond's origin story, you end up _not_ wanting him to become the man we know him as. The film does a fantastic job at humanising Bond, and allowing Daniel Craig to give a phenomenal performance that immediately silenced his naysayers. The rest of the cast are fantastic too, Eva Green's Vesper is one of, if not the best Bond women in the series, Mads Mikkelsen is a formidable villain, and Judi Dench is as delightful as ever. Add onto that some of the most awesomely brutal (and brutally awesome) action scenes in the series, and a killer David Arnold score that manages to retain that traditional Bond sound without using the Bond theme itself until the very end, and you have a genuine masterpiece. You're in for a treat with the Daniel Craig era, it's very different to what's come before - a lot darker, more introspective, and with way less of the traditional silliness associated with the series - but it's always really interesting to see unfold in front of new eyes

I had seen all the Connery Bonds at the point and License to Kill and that helped to fill in the gap of all the Moore movies we still had back then of which I had only seen "The Spy who loved me" and "Moonraker". From License to Kill onward I watched them all in theaters, even though I was technically 4 years too young to be officially allowed to watch "License to Kill" when it came out. I'm currently on my ultimate project: Watching each of them in the year of its 50th Anniversary. "Live and Let die" is due this year. It'll be interesting how far I will make it before I die. If I'm lucky I'll live long enough to see the 50th Anniversary of "Tommorow never dies" or "The World is not enough", but I assume this is probably the furthest I will progress.

Great reaction Jennypenny. Vesper is my second favorite Bond Girl. When Eon finally got the rights to Casino Royale, (the first Bond novel), after years of legal wrangling with Kevin McClorry, they decided to reboot the franchise, and start Bond at the beginning of his 00 career. It made for a phenomenal movie. The decision to not play the Bond theme fully until the end was to signify that that was when he became the Bond that we know. No spoilers for Quantum, but it will be interesting to see how you will react to it without having to wait 3 years for it to come out. I think the wait had an effect on how some of us long term fans reacted to it when it finally came out. Again, great job by the best reactor on KZbin.

That's incorrect, the rights to Casino Royale were owned by Sony who exchanged the rights with MGM for the rights to Spider-Man in 1999. The rights to the organisation SPECTRE and the character of Ernst Stavro Blofeld were tied up in McClory's estate due to the issues surrounding the Bond novel Thunderball. MGM regained the rights to these in 2013 after McClory died in 2006.

Yes. Casino Royale was the first bond novel. Le Chiffre (The Cypher) adopted that name because at the end of WWII, he was or claimed to be amnesiac. He was in a refuge camp until he received a Statelsss passport and went underground. Fleming's novel also featured an extended deep explanation of the strategy and philosophy of poker. Le Chiffre's choice for Bond was a carpet beater, rather than a bell on a rope. Vesper pretended to be tortured. Bond later noted a small cut on the back of one ear where she drew blood to smear on her legs to suggest an assault on her genitals. A "silencer" is misnamed. It is actually a suppressor. It does not silence a firearm. It makes far more noise than the "phut" in movies. It would be distinctly heard, for instance, in another room or over the noise of a crowd. You also pay a considerable price in performance. The classic hitman handgun is a 22 automatic with a suppressor. Revolvers are rejected because of the noise of the inevitable gas leakage around the cylinder. So there is still the mechanical noise of the action. The ammunition chosen is .22 short or a special low noise round. The effective range is inches, which is okay, since the purpose is to kill face to face with a minimum of noise, and there is indeed little noise when all that is properly chosen. Bond had an automatic defibrillator, an AED. You and everyone else should familiarize yourself with them. They are mounted on the walls of most public buildings. They are simple. Electrode placement is not critical. The device instructs you by voice, and it will only fire on a cardiac rhythm that can be converted. Bond would not have pushed the button to fire. That's automatic. They are on reasonably firm ground with digitalis. ventricular fibrillation, a convertible rhythm, is one possible event in digitalis overdose. It's not too farfetched that they could have put enough digitalis in his drink, but realistically, he should have finished the drink.

I think Casino Royale embodies everything i wanna see in a Bond Movie. A cool and masculine and charming James Bond, a smart and witty female counterpart like Vesper who also has weaknesses (a characteristic you wouldnt see in todays Hollywood), cool Action, good Music, a great Villain like Mads Mikkelsen, cool Locations. I could go on, definitely one of the best Bond Movies for me. I also think because it is based on James earlier years as a 00 Agent, Vepsers death made him even more distant and detached to Women later on but that is just a guess. Sébastien Foucan was one of the Inventors of Parcour, at the time he was clear one of the best in the World and it was so cool to see it in the Movie.

One of my favorites. Craig's first two are so nostalgic for me.

Loving your vid as always; awesomely-brilliant and well-informed, witty and intelligent. Fun Fact: when i saw this in the UK on its opening day, in That Final Scene, where Bond confronts the wounded Mr White, and That Theme sloooooowly cranks up and builds and Builds and BUILDS, and then Mr Craig pulls out THAT Line, "The name's Bond..." and then the Full Bond Theme kicked in LOUD, the WHOLE cinema erupted, on their/our feet cheering and applauding !!! Who says we are (to quote Jack Wade in Goldeneye) "stiff-@ssed Brits" 😊 ???

was i the only one that did the airquotes when Jen talked about the movie at the end and said in the older movies theres always a villian with a "laser" trying to take over the world 😂

This movie does a masterful job of subverting expectations set up by classic Bond (the “car chase” that last seconds before he crashes to avoid Vesper) while also breathing new life into the property and keeping Bond a suave badass.

Nice review again Jen. Casino Royale is one of the best Bond films, sadly for me this is as good as it would ever get during the Craig era, although Skyfall is also fairly good. I'll be interested to see what you think of the other films left to review, particularly No Time to Die (which I absolutely hate!)

I've been waiting for this reaction, didn't disappoint!!! I was brought up on and loved the old style Bond movies, but the Daniel Craig ones bring him bang up to date. Fave bond movie, fave reactor, what a treat!! Thank you!!

If you want to see more of Craig, I highly recommend Layer Cake. It's a British neo noir gangster film and is the movie which convinced the producers to cast him as Bond.

Happy to see this with you Jen My favorite bond movie. The Director Martin Campbell is also the same director of GoldenEye

This was a smart change of direction for the franchise. The whole "world ending stakes" market was about to be completely taken over by superheroes. As cool as the gadgets were, most of them would make Bruce Wayne or Tony Stark roll their eyes and call them cute. So going in a similar direction as Mission: Impossible and the Bourne movies was smart and much more faithful to the source material. After Die Another Day went over the top and tumbled down the other side, a full reset was in order.

And this change in direction, from world ending stakes and super-gadgets to focusing more on personalized plots and great fights, helped age the franchise _really_ well, as the third movie came _just_ before the John Wick-led action renaissance in Hollywood. The franchise would've been dead in the water if they were going the world ending route right as the MCU and X-Men movies were dominating that market. And if they didn't show they had anything worth offering in fight choreography and set pieces after the John Wicks and all the Wick copycats, nobody would've showed up to watch when they knew they could get better elsewhere. Nobody wanted more Taken 3-style fights after 2014.

Detail in the beginning, when he shoots the guy, for a very very quick second, you see a picture of him and his family which is great to set up Daniel Craig's bond

Jen I've been loving your Bond reactions and am so glad you're finally on my favorite of them all (along with The Living Daylights)!

This Bond was closer to Fleming's hero. And all the movies tie together, which is neat. Glad you liked it.
