I recommend keeping a jar of the small scraps (you know the little ends? Plus doesn't have to be a jar, it can just be a bag or something) and using that as well to stuff them!

I have a scraps... And I also use old pillows I buy them cheap from Kohl's so I go through them pretty quickly maybe changing out once a year.. anyway I wash them and then I take the fill out of the inside and use that as my stuffing. Works great. Also I do the same thing if I'm running low on the fill at thrift stores grab a pillow for $0.50 wash it maybe twice lol And then use it

Hey Jenna, you're doing great on amigurumi! About the eyes: a lot of times people like to use safety eyes for amigurumi toys and plushies! They're very convenient because you don't have to sew them on. But using beads because you have them in the house is cool too!
@amara560
@amara560 Жыл бұрын
Great tip! And I'd like to add 'safety' eyes are not safe for children under 3 years. Make sure you embroider on eyes and secure very well in that case.

For the safety eyes, I add E-6000 glue &/or hot glue to the back of the eyes( lots of it) to make sure they are super secure for little ones… also, Jenna, it’s easier to add the eyes before u add the stuffing… very cute & GREAT JOB on ur first amigurumis!! Love that tiny pumpkin! You can also make them out of old sweaters( recycle) or flannel shirts or just about any material!

I was making crocheted stuffed animals in the early nineties as a preteen before amigurumi was a thing… I stopped for…erm…almost 30 years 🫣 and just recently started again, as something to sooth my brain and keep my fingers limber (bad arthritis). I started during our summer vacation using patterns I found or bought online, books I ordered, KZbin tutorials… and it is so fun and gratifying, makes me so happy. I don’t know what I am going to do with all my new stuffies, but who cares? 😂 I’ll find some space for them. I am currently working on a tortoise wearing a hat that my daughter drew for me when she was 4, and I am not even using a pattern, just winging it based on what I’ve learned in the last 3 months! Love your channel, Jenna! 💜

That's so fun that you got your love back for the craft again! Amigurumi is the Japanese word for knitted/crocheted stuffed doll, so that has been around for aaages. Apparently the modern day amigurumi trend came over to the west in the late 1970s. Super interesting to learn more about imo. But crochet, including amigurumi, really has exploded in recent years with KZbin and everything.
@kripar3117
@kripar3117 Жыл бұрын
That’s cool to learn, thanks, in early 90s Germany no one used the term and hardly anyone made stuffies like that, so when I saw it popping up everywhere again, I went „hey, I used to do that!“ And now I do it again! 😊

@@didi8835 okay, as I stated above, no one used the term in Germany in the early nineties, and from what I read after the previous commenter very nicely explained the origin to me, the term became popular in the West in the early 2000s, so maybe tone it down with the multiple exclamation points. Sheesh.

I always had difficulty getting the correct tension on my foundation chains. some people suggest using your usual tension but sizing up the hook for the starting chain, which helps. what i prefer though is "foundation single crochet". i get much more consistent results now :) also as other people mentioned: save your yarn/fabric scraps to use as stuffing! you can also obtain polyfil second-hand by thrifting pillows/sleeping bags/comforters/stuffed toys, etc. I even like to include small amounts of plastic trash in my stuffing if the item is mostly decorative and doesn't need to be laundered (grocery bags, plastic mailing envelopes, deflated bubble wrap, you get the idea). Just make sure the object in question is spot-clean only and not meant for children, that way you can avoid issues with drying.
@barbarasmith2693

These look terrific! Jenna, if you want to up your amigurumi game, look for a video tutorial on how to do an 'amigurumi single crochet'. Basically, the difference between and amigurumi single crochet and a normal single crochet is that you insert your hook in the stitch, then YARN UNDER (instead of over as usual). It takes a little while to get used to doing that because muscle memory makes you want to do the opposite, but what you get is a much tighter single crochet. The idea is to not allow the stuffing to show between the stitches. Another tip is use at least one hook size smaller than you think you need (Unless the designer of the pattern specifies a certain hook, that is). The tighter the stitches, the nicer your finished piece will look. If you get really ambitious, look up a video tutorial on 'amigurumi invisible decreases'. These are really simple too. You insert your hook under the front loop only of the two stitches you want to use for your decrease WITHOUT YARNING over (or under!) until AFTER you have both of those front loops on your hook. then you Yarn under and pull that loop through the two loops on your hook. Voila! Invisible decrease made. Also, safety eyes are not very expensive and you will be shocked at the cuteness factor of using them. They come in lots of sizes too, which can be used to great cuteness amplification effect as well.🥰
