I quit today. I am not even showing up to work until I typed my resignation letter and hand my badge this Friday. The environment is very toxic, extremely toxic. I had young professionals ten years my junior acting like clowns. The last straw was getting written up for not telling anyone I was using the restroom last week. The environment is that bad. I had to ask permission to use the restroom. I constantly was getting laughed at, bullied and always felt like an outcast. I am using all my unpaid time off, paid time off and vacation hours leading to Friday. It's a wrap. I have a nice nest egg and an guaranteed monthly income. I have interviews lined up this week and in two weeks, I will be working as a poll worker for additional income. I survived homelessness. I can definitely survive a pandemic. Thank you for your advice. I greatly appreciate it.

What is the worst case scenario, and how likely is it to happen. When we're about to make a big change, our brains will play the worst case scenarios. @@johnconnor210 it's so normal to worry about what our families will think; it's also very normal for those we love to try to protect us by keeping us in the same place (especially when it has a steady paycheck). I want you to consider a different perspective: what will your family think when you take the steps you really WANT to take and are successful? And more importantly, how will you feel. One of my closest friends just made the decision to go back to school to change her career as well, I'm going to encourage you to d the same thing I made her do. Calculate the ROI, and research alternatives. School obviously has costs, and you want to make sure that it will pay off. Often I hear people revert to school when they're stuck or unhappy, but it doesn't always solve the problem (and can create unnecessary debt). The parttime work landscape has definitely changed; but industry demands have shifted creating new opportunities. Think delivery, gig economy, these have trended upwards as our situation shifted. I have no one there anymore to be there for me, plus I am now doing the same thing over and over again but triple the amount of work. Mind numbing. I actually I did this twice. First after working for 11 years at straight, I felt really bored, tired & no energy to continue any more. At that time I took break extending up to 8 months. Second time it was due to a really toxic working environment with bad bosses. After 3 months of job search I could managed to land a job, however I only stayed with that company for a period 6 months & shifted to my current job which I'm in for almost an year now. I think having a strong rainy day fund is the most important thing. One must have at least 6-8 months worth of living or beyond. In my case I have a rainy day fund for 12 months, which I keep on expanding. I feel more & more people would have quit their jobs without another one lined up, if they had a strong rainy day fund. Life is too short to be miserable, to live in fear & to live in the feeling of stuck, especially for a job / boss you hate. This world is unimaginably bigger than the cubicle, the compartment, the meeting room, & the laptop screen you see more than 50, 60 hours per week. I'll not hesitate to do it again, if I have to.

This somewhat ties into whether you have 3-6 month cash reserves, but I think a big point missing from this list is: do you have major responsibilities/obligations whereby other people depend on your income? E.g. young children, unemployed spouse, care for elderly, perhaps have a mortgage, etc.
@JenniferBrick4 жыл бұрын

Checked all but 1! It's time. I'm in the process of starting my own company but could take 3 months to get certed from the state. Do I just quit and focus on that or do I keep my job or find something that I can do to fill the void?
@JenniferBrick4 жыл бұрын
Brandon I'm so sorry I typed a reply on my phone and it clearly didn't post! The answer is, it depends. First thing you need to consider is your finances. Can you go 6 months without a paycheck? If you would get an in between job, consider if that has lead time; if you're considering a gig-economy hustle (like Instacart or Lyft), take profitability into consideration. If you have the resources and something to do in between, and especially if you have the resources to last and to cushion you while you start your company you're in a solid place to make a jump IF you decide it's the right move for you. I've made the jump multiple times, and I believe the universe has our backs. But I also know that the universe doesn't always optimize timing and rent/mortgage payments need to be made.

I recently quit my last job because they asked me to do something unethical. Now how should I explain that during my next interview opportunity?
@rocioortizsepulveda39124 жыл бұрын
This is a really good question! I’m in the same position. I don’t really know how to explain this properly in an interview
@JenniferBrick4 жыл бұрын
Sorry I'm so late replying to you! When you leave for ethical reasons you can usually get away with a generic, "I realized the company wasn't a fit for what I was looking for and decide to leave to focus on finding the right one." Some companies will prod, 'Why wasn't it a fit." In this case I would still try to stay generic and say something along the lines of, "I realized there was a misalignment in values." At this point you can redirect, "From your website, I know values are important to [the company name], and the value of [insert one] really resonates with me." This turns it to them and their company. If they keep pushing, it gets delicate, especially if your separation agreement includes a non-disparagement. I haven't met a hiring manager who would push beyond, "I had ethical concerns." You don't want to go straight to saying ethical concerns because you likely can't give specifics (and nor should you, especially in an interview), and it may cause alarm. When you lead in with bad fit and you chose to leave, to misalignment of values and then say ethics if really pushed it will tell them two things: you take confidentiality seriously and are not disparaging your former company at the drop of a hat, and that doing the right thing is important to you. I hope that helps - though with this comment being a few weeks old I hope you got through it and have a new dream job!

Three months ago they changed my schedule to 12pm to 12 am. I don't want to do this anymore. There is nothing to do really, i am not really gaining any new skills. I was going to quit but than covide happend. Thing is I have a chemical engineering degree but there aren't any jobs, unless you have 10 years experience. It's sucking my soul and no one gets it, I am miserable. My lease expired last week but now it becomes month to month and more expensive. Worst case scenario I quit, I go back to parents house and make money for my car payment via instacart. Honestly someone give me advice because I hate this job :'( not to mention it's not safe and everyday I am exposed to covid because my company is too damn cheap to enforce social distancing and coworkers refuse to wear masks.

I can't tell you what to do, you need to find that answer within you... But consider the risks vs. reward. In your comment you describe risks to you physical and psychological safety. Are you in touch with friends you studied with. Are they in companies or following paths that interest you? Also consider experience requirements may shift because of the economy. No matter what you do, it's great your parents are supportive and you have that safety net. Not everyone does, and knowing you CAN leave will make you bolder in whatever decision you make 💜

The main benefits most people get from having a job is a perception booster and leverage in their search, however can be obtained if one is between roles. I do agree, it's preferable for most people in most circumstances to find a new job before they hand in their notice, but it's not always possible across all situations.

I’m quitting my job because I have been asking for over a year for bigger opportunities and never received what I needed in order to truly thrive with my technical skills. I did have one opportunity to lead, but it was not in a role or assignment I expected. And I need to admit that I did not perform as well as I thought I would. Following that, they tried to put me in a position where I knew I would not grow for an entire year, based on what the assignment was. This happened twice. They then told me, oh yeah, a junior can do this. And this was at the height of the pandemic when we didn’t know to wear masks yet. They wanted me to travel during that. I felt so insulted. They did come up with some extra tasks for me, but that’s exactly how they felt. Extra. It did not feel meaningful. While I was picking up some skills that made me feel more well-rounded, I wasn’t doing what I felt I needed to do most. So now, I’m pursuing some temp/contract positions, aimed at giving me a shot at big roles while giving me what I need to get through the rest of the pandemic. This will also give me time to explore and find out what to do. Then I plan to move down south where property is $100,000+ cheaper and gives you twice as much space, if that option becomes realistic. I need some motivation. My last day tomorrow, and the month of October, might be very tough for me. But I know I can get through this.
@JenniferBrick4 жыл бұрын
It sucks that your company hasn't been giving you the opportunities you want - remember it's their loss that they didn't accept all of the awesomeness you have to offer. And you came to the right place for a pep talk :D I know these big life changes are terrifying. Its uncomfortable AF. But that's a good thing. No transformation is ever comfortable, and when you shake things up they will be rearranged and you'll be better, strong, and more awesome on the other side of it. I have homework for you today. And I want you to tell me when you've done it (you don't have to share the actual work just let me know you did the work): I want you to make a list of why you are exceptional and why a company would be mad to not hire you. What makes you stand out? Think about things you're naturally great at, the things coworkers would come to you for help, or when shit went sideways you would be the person your boss goes to. Also consider the things you LOVE doing. What aspects of your role could you do all day? This list is going to be the foundation of your job search - and after what youve been through its going to be the first step in rebuilding your confidence in yourself. You need to bring that energy into whatever happens next. No matter what, know one thing: your success is inevitable.
