This is fine if you are an hourly worker who is paid to spend time doing company tasks. (In fact, I wouldn't even give them the extra hour in that case.) But if you are a salaried worker who is paid to ensure that certain responsibilities are handled, you need to do what is needed to be sure your job is handled. If that mean more time than the pay justifies, you either need to renegotiate or find a new employer.
@willb5162 жыл бұрын
If you are a people/project manager and work salaried, this is virtually impossible. Machines break down in the middle of the night, a water leak needs immediate attention, your direct reports has an accident at 2:00AM. All these things happen and someone needs to take care of it ASAP. Usually that someone is a manager, supervisor, or other salaried worker that will need to sacrifice personal time to keep a business running.
@jstnrgrs2 жыл бұрын
@@willb516 this is right, and often missing from the “establish boundaries” discussion. The other side of it is that if you need to pick up kids at 2pm (or whatever other personal matter), just put a block in your calendar and do it. It shouldn’t be a problem.

You touched on the idea that stop by and end by times are not impervious. I agree, and I'm not sure that I support the idea of stop by and end by times. I actually do like the "work life integration" idea, but it's important to note that it applies in all directions. I'll do work anytime, but I'll also take care of family matters anytime. If my kid has a doctors appointment at 3pm on a Tuesday, I just take her. I don't ask my boss. If an important project at work needs my attention at 7pm on a Saturday, I just do it. I don't ask my wife. I do think the idea of enumerating 4 buckets is good, because otherwise important things could easily fall through the cracks. You advice of concentrate, procrastinate, delegate, and eliminate is very good too.

I keep struggling with self-interested employers who don't care about my work-life boundaries. I'm just sick of fighting constraining and co-dependent social situations in order to secure my own schedule. I need the money while I am working on my career but I keep getting caught into the temporary work-cycle which always messes with the schedule I want. Employers never seem to 'respect' personal time, unless you have some competing obligation, ie. another job or school work. But God forbid if you want to take the bull by the horns and start your own personal business or schedule. Then you are just being selfish (I say this all facetiously, yet with honesty and seriousness as well,).

@JERBF3 жыл бұрын
Hey liked your video I agree with alot. In my personal opinion though the bucket idea including nessicary things such as fitness to me isn't a part of a life balance. And choosing just 4 things is hard if you can't explore 8 buckets to choose your 4 buckets. Its an investment you can't loose. We should have a period in our lives supported by society or government we can loose so we can explore what we really want. Im saying this cause I know too many people who don't know what life is like outside of work or have a hobby. It's all about getting a head to sit and do nothing to be honest. This maybe a reality for some who need material items or something to invest time to but I think it's much better off if we forget our freedoms and pretend we're just here alive to work live to work and support society like we live in the fudel eras. We already work an dinosaur of a labour law into today's world with not enough jobs to go around and people stressed for their time as they find, chores, work commute, work docked lunches, prep time such as cooking and mataining personal health as a write off because they can't choose otherwise. I mean I could care less I've been trying to work more hours in for myself and play some video games like I did as a teen but when it takes me until the sequel comes out to beat 1 single game and by that time a new console rolls out cause I have to work its not worth an 800$ console plus 100$ game for my mental health when I can just adjust my train of thought and sell all my time to work. Maybe when my daughter inherits my savings sheil be able to get a work life balance but I doubt it'll last long rates will rise prices will houses will become more impossible to buy. Either enjoy yourself or don't and if you have an issue then yes I totally agree you entire bucket idea is awesome nevermind buying every game for your console just specific hand picked developers. You'll have to loose your own investments to find this but it is what it is not like we get our 2 hours of life plus our money back for that crappy movie you couldn't sit through at the theaters. Time is what it is. Plus we got toxic work places and bosses everywhere that expect you to do above and beyond what they would even do like you to act like a slave. I was able to get a job every interview and hired full time fast for a reason and I work 2 jobs plus a home hussle. 16 hours a day 7 days a week im at work till im too tired once a month and take a day. I mean it still goes either way but the 8/8/8 still don't work outside of paper due to what people consider a write off in their life personally. It's not possible unless you let it and make it possible like you said a start and end time and knowing where and what you want to invest your time.
