Hello! Thanks for the video! Just a question. If I want to do cons in other States, do I need to get permits from those states in advance? Should I just go ahead and apply for permits in ALL States that I'm interested in doing cons in? Confused... :(

I did a lot of craft events with my grandma, and we found that having small toiletries is important. mini deoderant, toothpaste and brush, makeup if you wear makeup, and hand wipes if your snack ends up being greasy. 👍 love your advice there are tips that you mentioned that I hadn't thought about before.

ArtByKarenEHaley Thanks! I love the idea of having a mini toiletries kit or at least hand wipes! That's such a great idea ^_^

We found out hand wipes were a necessity because my grandpa brought us some fried chicken as a meal during a show once, and it was delicious but we had to take turns leaving the table to wash our hands afterwards. Another time, I was painting when a customer came while I was making dollhouse sized paintings, and I accidentally got paint all over the bag I put their purchase in! That time, we had the wipes with us (Thankfully!)

I haven't done an "artist alley" at a con yet, but I have done a couple of craft fairs at places that really were so different than my target market but by doing a lot of the things you mentioned, I managed to generate interest. Personally, the tip you mentioned that I really need to work on is downsizing. It seems like I may be overwhelming people with choice! Oops! Thanks for this vid, it's totally important and I wish I'd found it BEFORE I started selling in-person! Off to watch part two!

It is on the 10th, There was a bunch of art projects that I wanted to get done that I didn't get to, ones that I was working on and got messed up in the process. Still even struggling to come up with a price for what I make vs the time it takes to make it. I feel like I am going to under price it for right now, especially since this is just a hometown con. Not a big one. and I don't even have a way to hang my art up yet. I've been thinking on stuff that I could do. I didn't even think of having cash on me till you said it in your video. I have my square chip reader though, that I still need to setup. I wanted to make business cards that I never got too. I wanted to have time-lapse videos playing on a monitor, but I was never able to get to rendering it all with working on my art as well. So I think I will be a level of prepared, just not to the level that I wanted to be at. Love your hair btw.
@JenniferCharleeArt
@JenniferCharleeArt 7 жыл бұрын
aww thanks! It's totally a fades pink/peach now haha! Sounds like you had quite the list to finish to feel prepared. I didn't get a speed paint video to play until this last show (10 shows in haha). Don't feel bad about just printing your info on some paper for people to take if they really are interested in getting in contact with you...you can even say you've run out and have a paper that has your info that people can take a picture of. I have my info framed for people to snap of pic of when i run out of cards (which I currently am haha). Do a quick search on youtube for ways to display your art ...I bet there's a lot out there! Don't worry, you got this!

okay so not my first, but my second year hosting a table with my sister in a local middle school convention was earlier this year, and oh my goodness it was strange. i only got like 5 sales total with my really cheap art, and the people next to me didnt get any sales, their art was all like fashion design and painted pieces selling from 20$ up! they where angry at the end that they didnt get any sales but,, its a middle school convention, i barely sold anything, and my art tops out at 5$ for one thing. it was insane to me that they where so angry at a bunch of kids for not buying their stuff. i was really amazed that anyone bought anything from me and super happy that i had made back my table's worth plus 2$!
@JenniferCharleeArt
@JenniferCharleeArt 7 жыл бұрын
Lun Crazed that's where understanding the demographic of the show can help so much. Your cheaper items were much more attainable to purchase for a younger audience that has no money (and possibly parents who don't value it). Changing your pricing or even the products you bring to sell could really change based on the event and the audience there

yes exactly! my friend who was attending a booth across the room from me was selling mainly buttons and keychains, and made a huge profit because buttons are really cheap and a lot easier to collect! and keychains are super great gifts!

Great video! I’m still new at vending, but my tip is to stick to the basics! Bare minimum: you need a tablecloth, merch, cash register, and business cards. Don’t forget water and snacks! Also, put thought and time into building your booth setup. I threw mine together without a plan and I was kind of a hot mess but I still had a good time! The most important thing is you get out there. You can do it!

I just wanna say that I don't even look at tables that don't have prices written on the artwork, it's mostly due to a few unpleasant experiences I had at cons. Once, I wanted to buy a shirt from this artist, they told me the price and everything was okay at first, the girl really took her time packing it for me but just as she was finishing packing it, her boyfriend or the artist idk. showed up and he asked her how much she was selling the shirt for(which was suspicious) and when she told him, he was like "No, no, no, THAT shirt is ( and then he gave a price that was almost twice as much as what the girl said)", so then I politely said that I'm sorry but for that price I don't want it anymore (truthfully, I didn't want the shirt anymore because I felt like they were trying to swindle me and that they thought they could pressure me into buying it). The guy got kind of aggressive and started saying things like "Do you think making art is easy?!" and he tried to bully me into taking it because he said that it was already packed and he shoved the receipt into my chest. So I let the receipt fall to the ground and I just left without a word. / Another time, a girl in a Lolita costume was selling mousepads (and other stuff but I was only interested in the mousepads), I even complemented her costume and she said that ever piece of her outfit was imported from Japan, even her wig, so she really needs the money. She then told me an impossibly high price for the smallest mousepad ( she started saying that it was made out of some special material but still, it would never be worth it no matter what material it was made of). So I told her "no thank you" and I started walking around the convention. A while later, a guy was now selling the mousepads and I overheard him tell someone else a completely different price. So I asked about the mousepads and he gave me the same price he told the guy before me which was almost 1/5 of the price the girl gave me(I asked her several times about the price so it's not that I heard it wrong. She even continued on how expensive cosplay is and how much she needs the money for it. Like... Not my problem and I saw "Kamikaze Girls" too). So... it kind of seems like the girl was stealing from the person that hired her because she was trying to sell the mousepads at a different price and she was pocketing the difference. Sorry about the rant. Great video btw.

I love your tips but, I'd like to add that, as a convention goer, I'd rather go to an overly cluttered table than a bare table. If I can see all 5-10 items you have for sale from 10 ft away, I will not bother to approach. I like getting up close to a table to see many items the seller has to offer. It's almost like treasure hunting. :)

I've never actually sold at an artist alley, but I like to plan it out as though I did and because I have very diverse subjects and themes, I got the idea to have a special binder for a certain theme (in my case it would be goreish art, hence why I felt it should stay tucked away) on the table so that those who are interested can check it out, or steer clear and keep their focus on the prints being presented without troubling themselves by looking at something they're not interested in. This can apply to a lot of things too, like a binder for fandom, originals, cutesie and so on. Plus you can sell a lot more stuff without having your space overwhelmed with posters.

A good idea if you're a gaming streamer too and have an outlet. Bring a capture thing and a monitor. Proceed to grab attention because you're casually playing Animal Crossing New Leaf or Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep and everyone can see, and keep yourself entertained. (Also can help with demographic choices because if you know what'll be there you can totally theme your game picks around this.)

I just saw this, but I may be getting a table at the MCM comicon in October this year where I live. I’m a little nervous because I’m not so good at digital art, is traditional art ok to sell?
@artpipe
@artpipe 6 жыл бұрын
Few questions: 1. What exactly is "artist alley"? 2. Are independent artists welcome to sell at comic cons?, no requirements on being an industry pro? 3. If an artist produces books that aren't really comics but more art based, is it worth it? In other words, are attendees mainly interested in "comics" and "comic" art only?
@unclefelix3412
@unclefelix3412 6 жыл бұрын
1.An artist alley is an area in a convention where artists sell their art, whether its fan art, original, 2d, 3d, merchandise, etc 2. Independent artists are certainly welcome!! They accept applications from anyone, but often require a portfolio of work 3. Plenty of artists sell "zines", small books containing stand-alone pieces of art or art series, however those would be a lot more likely to sell if they're fanart based or based around a popular or trendy concept

Thank you for these awesome tips! Love your hair 😍 purple is my color!! 💜💜💜 lol! How much does it usually cost to get an artist's table at a Con? Do you have to submit your art to get accepted or not? Also, what are your thoughts on fanart selling? 😳 Ok, sorry, so many questions! Going to go find you on IG now and check out your channel too!! ☺️💜
@JenniferCharleeArt
@JenniferCharleeArt 7 жыл бұрын
Haha! No worries about the questions! I have been wanting to do some more artist alley videos so this gives me a good idea of the types of questions people want answered :P Tables can cost all sorts of prices and can range from $30-$400 depending on your area, how big or well established the con is, and how big the crowd/city is that it's in. Typically a larger investment will equal more profit only because there are typically more attendees. That CAN be skewed a bit though depending on if the crowd that's there is your target audience (the people who love YOUR stuff). There are differing processes for getting into an AA too. I find that most smaller ones are FCFS (first come first serve) but AAs can also be juried (where they pick who gets in based on things like skill level etc.) or even done by a raffle (randomized). Typically, they require you to fill out and sign some sort of contract that ensures you understand their rules and will adhere to them. Some of these are more intense and some require you to have a sellers permit number to apply. Note: you will ALWAYS need some sort of sellers permit (right now, I apply for temporary ones for the separate locations the cons are in). Some cons just want to see you have one sooner rather than later. As far as fanart...it's a bit of a tricky subject and I find there is a place for it as long as that is used only as a stepping stone to then make your own original work. Right now I have around 50/50 in terms of what sort of art makes up my table....but I plan on moving more and more toward all original. Also, it's worth noting that certain companies take fanart/copyright stuff a lot more seriously than others. And some encourage fanart. One to be very careful with is anything Disney (that includes stuff like star wars and guardians of the galaxy). There are also a lot of things that are now in the public domain like most original fairytales (as long as they are not specifically taken from Disney adaptations). Hope that wall of text is helpful! Let me know if you have any other questions! :D

Andrea Rouillard for me I find more variety and less quantity is good! So I’ll bring ten different designs and bring 5-10 of each ☺️ this way you can see which is your best seller! ❤️

I think my only concern is that one of the conventions I checked recently required a special event license in order to sell. Is this a universal thing??? And these cons are out of state bc my state doesn't have many that I could sell at, so idk how any of that works

Do it!!! Do you have social media? Sometimes it can help to get some feedback from followers on what they'd like to buy or see at an AA. Do you sell online?

Jennifer Charlee Art I have been selling online for a while now. I live in ny so there are not a lot of conventions around here x_x and every time I apply to them they ask for my previous experience of selling at conventions.

I'm so sorry you're feeling that way. Sometimes it's a matter of getting your stuff in front of your best audience. Finding that audience is usually the hardest part. Try sharing in different places and really think about who your "biggest fan" would be. Who would LOVE your stuff...think about where those people may hang out (IRL and online). Maybe share in certain facebook groups (if you're allowed to) to people that you think would enjoy your art the best. Part of it is also being able to grow with your work. This means constantly improving and getting better at what you do. ALL artists are constantly striving for their best and that growth can be seen and appreciated by their audience. Don't ever let yourself stop and not evolve in your work. It's a TON of work and trial and error to find your audience though. Remember, there are all sorts of folks out there who like all sorts of things. Don't give up and don't stop reassessing who might love and want to support what you do. On a side note, it's also important to get away from those who may be bringing you down or really don't value what you do. Sometimes this is family, or others in our lives...but sometimes we do it to ourselves when we let jealousy take over when we scroll through social media and can only see other's achievements. The bottomline is, always be searching for those who will build you up and never stop growing in what you are passionate about doing
