Freddie Mercury loved mythology, and VoicePlay really plays into the different death gods perfectly. J. None as the Egyptian Anubis judges Earl worthy of an afterlife (the heart must be as light as a feather). Eli as Yama Nirvana carries a mace to capture souls. Layne's "Guardian" represents Cerberus, guard dog of Hades (thus the fur coat). But it is Geoff who really intrigues me. "Baron" is from Haitian Vodou, Baron Samedi, the lwa (deity) of death and resurrection. He has the power to bring Earl back to life, which is why the others keep shooting him glares and Yama Nirvana (Eli) seems to get into a fight with him. They are there to capture a new soul, but the Baron is there to possibly bring that soul back to life. "I paid my dues" is a fun hint, as you can pay the Baron off. Geoff uses his cane to block the others from striking Earl in "Under Pressure" with their weapons (the sword and mace) which would completely sever Earl from life. As Earl realizes just how much he wants to live, he faces the other gods and defeats them one by one. The first who must go is Cerberus if he is to escape this afterlife, then Yama and Anubis. However, the one who can bring him back is the Baron. Geoff stands his ground but doesn't look posed to fight. He starts to turn away when he goes POOF! As I said, in Vodou, the Baron can be bought if you "pay your dues." Notice that Earl's husband gives him a silver medallion at the beginning, which he wears all through the song, but the medallion is missing at the very end. It's the price for the Baron to bring him back. As someone who studied mythology, legends, and religions in college, this absolutely tickled me! All of this was inspired by Earl's very real medical emergency. Freddie Mercury would approve. "Just never make it boring."

Love the insights! I know of Anubis and Cerberus, but the other two were new to me. And yeah, love the interactions between the death deities/figures. Edit: Oh! I just saw that during Geoff's solo, he looks at the medallion! Certainly a potential nod to "Oh, you have the toll..." It's just before the cane slam.

This was filmed not long after Earl had a health scare. His appendix ruptured. That's where the idea came from. This also is the 4th video of their kidnap story. But is awesome by itself too. Trapped. Panic In 4 Minutes Parts 1 & 2. Queen In 5 Minutes.

@@nydougtx Alot of people don't think Queen is part of the story because of the timeframe of filming. However. They forget that Panic was filmed before Trapped and yet Trapped is the beginning of the story. And I heard it directly from from Geoff about a year ago or so In a Patreon chat. They were talking about kidnap videos and he named those 4 together. He even joked that Cesar was the only one that hasn't been kidnapped and so they need to do a kidnap video for Cesar. Of they haven't yet but I hope they do sometime soon.

Layne and Eli pulled bits from Queen’s catalog of music specifically to tell a story. This was just after Earl had a health scare while they were on tour. Aside from Eli mentioning Freddy Mercury’s interest in mythology, the rest of this comment is based on the video and my own research as an amateur student of mythology: Anubis (Egyptian) (J None), Cerberus (Greek) (Layne) and Yama Nirvana (East Asian and Buddhist) (Eli) are all guardians that convey souls to the underworld. There is visible tension in the video between them and Geoff’s character, Baron Samedi (Haitian Voudou). Baron is the master of the dead AND the giver of life. A person will not die if Baron refuses to dig their grave. So while the others want to get on with it, it’s the Baron’s decision. It’s only right that he is the last one to face Earl before Earl’s return to his life.

This explanation is very useful
@MiladyMacabre Жыл бұрын
One quick correction: Layne's character is named Guardian and he (along with the tradition-based angelic symbols on his face) represents Angels, most specifically the Archangel Michael, who holds a flaming sword. Anubis weighs the heart of the deceased against a feather. If the heart is pure, the feather will be heavier and the deceased is welcomed into the Egyptian afterlife.
@Wildecat10 Жыл бұрын
@@MiladyMacabre Unfortunately, that explanation for Layne doesn’t quite work. The fur coat he is wearing is symbolic of Cerberus, also known as the hound of hell. He was a guardian of the gates of hell, who allowed souls in but not out. (Although I would usually prefer to think of Layne as an angel, he generally presents as more of an imp!)

This is a medley of one of my favourite bands of all time. While I love Geoff's bass notes, I really love how beautiful his tone is as a baritone. And Layne was dropping a serious beat. Rock god Eli's grit is beautifully done and J-None holding the lyrical bass with Geoff's bass line during the last segment of The Show Must Go On is amazeballs. This is NOT to discount Earl's high notes which I think Freddy would appreciate.

I am glad I got to know VoicePlay after Earl's departure, they sound so much juicier without the laser voice. He is super skilled, and his voice deserves to shine and make those around him shine, too, but this voice combination doesn't work for me as it seems to enhance the dry and sharp qualities in the voices of Eli and Jay, leaving the entire bottom of the spectrum to just Geoff. More bass and middle, and less treble, that's the VoicePlay that never fails to make me melt!

I’ve said it time and time again. And so have many other people on this channel. You really need to split your reaction and your analysis. It’s infuriating watching you stop mid beat and completely breaking the flow of the song, you also then completely miss out. You should listen to the entire song without pausing so we get the full reaction, and then play the song again after, This time breaking it down and analysing the song. It would be a MASSIVE improvement to the video.
