Actually, I believe you've heard Scott sing even lower...it was he who picked up the bass line in Hallelujah when Avi sang that second verse. He has amazing versatility and a very, very wide range. I had to chuckle when I saw you get the goose bumps with Scott's final verse...I've seen this video probably 100 times, and it does that to me too...every single time.

I've been a big follower of Pentatonix since the SingOff and I'm still amazed the amount of sounds comes out of only 5 voices.
@hernameispekka_Rebecca2 жыл бұрын
You're kind of right in that "we don't get that much from them" with Matt going to bass there. Even with Avi, Pentatonix is way more sparing it putting in low and high notes. They do it for sure, and to great effect, but way less than the other big acapella groups. Which is honestly one of the reasons I personally prefer them to the other groups. The other groups tend to pull me out of the performance with too high or low notes or different shown off techniques. Still very impressive and I get why other people might love it. But personally I'm very fond of Pentatonix very intentional use of tricks and moments, leaving space for an easy listening experience while still being kind of "undercover technically impressive" at points.
@grischad202 жыл бұрын
i disagree, pentatonix just tends to shines on the high register with mitch more so than the low one. whereas a voiceplay or a home free will leave some place for the bass to bass, pentatonix gets their umph with higher notes than either of the other groups (i'm not even counting Kirstin) but they're just as showy with their technically impressive stuff It also kinda makes sense, out of the 3 they're the only group with a very high tenor and a woman, a big drop would be that much bigger since they hold the line higher
@kayecastleman63532 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. Pentatonix tends to play a cooler game, holding their best cards for those spectacular moments when they are most impactful, and often sliding them in where you might miss them if you aren't paying attention. I think a lot of that comes from the broad range of musical training Kevin and Avi had at the get-go, plus the genius of Ben Bram, of course. If you watch their early performances on the Sing-Off, they're really all over the place trying to show off everyone's talent. It didn't take them long to sort out the 'less is more' principle, and now we wait expectantly for those exquisite displays of unique skill they slide into a masterfully crafted arrangement. The low bass notes don't ring my bell like Mitch or Kirstie's highs, but they do make my belly tremble, just a little! 🙂
@PtxXtp Жыл бұрын
@@grischad20 I agree with Rebecca. You tend to see home free and voiceplay using their highest of the highs and lowest of the lows almost as a show off moment where as Ptx uses them more sparingly and where it will highlight the music. Ptx may come across as highlighting the highs more but part of it is that’s Mitch’s natural singing voice. Usually singing in same octave as Kirstie. Where tenors in the other groups can hit the notes but it’s not their main register. They have lower speaking voices where Mitch’s is naturally higher resulting in a higher placement when he sings.

Imagine being the arranger of these expert vocalists! Get them to individually sing it through their way, notate each one. Merge the notations together, then after their first run-through ask Kirsten "so on the 3rd and 4th beats of the fifth bar of the second chorus, could you add a pullout from the harmony and drop 3 semi-tones?" A chuckle runs round the group because they know she was planning to cook Easter dinner but she just nods, grins and kicks Mitch lightly in the shin under the desk. He responds with a dramatic Shakespearean death scene, winds up on his back on the floor with Kirsten on top beating him mercifully with open fists and a big grin.

You’re right (of course you are) that Scott has tremendous range. He released his first solo recently, called Mars, in which his range is totally on exhibit. If you decide to react to it, you may want to include the teaser he released just beforehand. It’s an a capella snippet of the song that shows what a vocal beast he is. Jennifer! Missed the live stream but I'm here! So in this one, at 10:05, listen to Matt sing " ... songs, that voices never shared ...". He hits, I think you said it was an F# on "songs". The original song goes up two more notes on "that voices" but Matt chooses not to. Like someone chose to do with "the world" in a cover of Everybody Wants To Rule The World I heard somewhere. 😁 So was it an artistic choice by Matt or did he just not feel comfortable going up those 2 more notes? Maybe close to his transition point? I can't blame him though, the man is an incredible bass! Anyway just something I've always noticed in this performance. Great reaction and analysis as always Jennifer! 😊
