@@astellis11the cursed to fall in love was definitely Riordan’s spin… but my understanding of at least Homer’s version was she was exiled to live in alone on her island. The question is how well immortal psychology would acclimate to living in isolation for centuries relative to how humans mentally degrade even after years in solitary. We really can’t know. Either way, it doesn’t excuse her actions, but it does garner some sympathy from the average person for her predicament, especially not knowing with certainty how we would handle the same situation. Spoilers (kinda?) Why is it a problem for people to not like Calypso here? Is she as bad as her book equivalent? God no. But she still holds someone against their will, basically mocks them with the fact that they can6di anything about it, while she doesn't physically harrass them she does absolutely verbally (telling someone you and them are gonna be together after they've repeatedly told you to stop is harassment), and her apology? Yeah, no, for the people saying that Odysseus didn't apologize to Poseidon right (he didn't), Calypso’s is worse. No one needs to go to the source material to not like her imo and clearly this isn't a unanimous thing, since Circe is wildly loved here and Epic and she does a similar thing in the Odyssey. Case in Point: I love Circe here, not in the Odyssey but I don't like Calyso in either (except her voice, gorgeous vocals, Jorge always chooses the best)

I agree with you -- the issue I have is when people shut down others for feeling any sympathy for Calypso. Imo, you can feel sympathy for a person while still acknowledging what they've done is abhorrent and inexcusable. (Spoilers for the Vengeance Saga) I'm Not Sorry for Loving You is a heartbreaking song and I feel terrible for Calypso's situation; it's also a bad apology. I personally read Epic's Calypso as not being intentionally malicious, she earnestly believes she loves Odysseus. At the same time, her words come across as manipulative (putting the onus on Odysseus for not loving her). I read this more as an unconcious, warped reasoning rather than something actually sinister. TLDR: What Calypso did is categorically wrong, AND I find her character nuanced and sympathetic. Both are true.
@EchoedR3 күн бұрын
@@StrudelHalfBaked Oh absolutely, I think she has no malicious intent in her bones on epic, she clearly truly loves him. On the flip side, part of loving someone is knowing when to let them go, which she ultimately never learns and doesn't fully see what's wrong with her actions. I'll never fault someone for feeling sympathetic for her, but I don't like how so many people think that others aren't allowed to dislike her. I think sympathetic characters can still be dislikable whether you sympathize with them or not, yk?

@@evelynolea4433 I do agree with most of what you said but i do want to point out that "what she did to him every night for seven years" probably only happened in the Odessy, not in Epic. Epic is not a 1 to 1 replica, it has many changes from the original story. I do not belive Jorge kept that part of the story for Epic, especialy since it's never stated she did that to him. We shouldn't assume something is canon to Epic unless it's a part of the songs or said by Jorge himself. It's only stated she want's to sleep with him, not that she actualy did. Ofcourse she is still Toxic AF, but not as bad as in the original story.

The artists that make every animatic are extremely talented and i love seeingt the various styles. That being said though, I will say this particular animatic doesnt fit the portrayal of Calypso for Epic the musical. Its important to remember that though the musical is based off The Odyssey. There are a lot of creative liberties that purposely tell the story differently. This particular animaric is more catered to the darker side of the actual Odyssey story

Yes, that's the trap people fall into when it comes to Calypso. They tend to focus on the tragedy of the orginal, which in my opinion downplays the story Jorge is trying to tell
@Genderless_spoon3 күн бұрын
I actually disagree with this, I don’t believe Jorge has ever said that Calypso did not do the things this animatic shows, if he did then I apologize for being uninformed, but while Calypso in Epic is wildly more sympathetic and understandable she still does awful and horrific things to Odysseus. Both can be true at once, and I believe that erasing a characters terrible actions because they are sympathetic does a disservice to the storytelling. Calypso is an incredibly complicated and layered character, and it absolutely makes sense to feel sympathetic to her situation, but at the end of the day she still very clearly forces herself on Odysseus and pays no attention to his feelings. I’d say this animatic does a pretty good job of showing that while also making it clear that she genuinely cares about him in her own slightly twisted way.

Long story short for Calypso’s story. She is a daughter of a Titan and sided with them during the war of Titans vs Olympians. When the Titans lost the Olympians banished her to her island all alone. So basically she is desperate for companionship. In the Odyssey she offers Odysseus immortality if he marries her. Also the line “last I checked Goddesses can’t die”, I’ve seen other channels that know her story speculate that Jorge put that line in to maybe suggest that she tried taking her life at one point. Long story short Calypso formed a toxic trait to try and trap men on her island so she won’t be alone anymore.

So, as people have already said, Calypso said some stuff in her attempt to get Ody away from the ledge of the cliff that ultimately ended up making his breakdown worse. I see a lot of people say she did that on purpose though, which I think is pretty stupid take, ngl. Odysseus himself says she has no idea what he's been through. So that means that all throughout those 7 years he's been on the island he's never told her of his travels and tribulations. All she has to go on are the things he says in his sleep. The first of which, mind you, had to do with his wife whom he loves, cherishes, and clearly uses as a source of inner strength. So obviously, she's going to assume the others are similar. Funnily enough, at literally any other point in his journey she'd probably be right. Point is, I see a lot of people just assuming she's more malicious than she actually is. She is doing something bad, but she's doing bad things like a kid does. She's too naive and inexperienced to really understand that what she's doing is wrong, or at least the depths to which it's wrong. And that's all not even considering what her own psychological state is like after being more or less trapped on an island for centuries at the very least. Whether she stays willingly or not kinda changes depending on what versions of the story you read, but regardless, Jorge has long since proven that his renditions of the gods are more human character-wise than their original selves. So it wouldn't be outlandish for her to have suffered some of the same effects as most humans do in extended periods of isolation and solitary.
@drakemckisson24283 күн бұрын
She word for word quotes three unrelated phrases from different loved ones of Ody's. Maybe an argument can be made that she wasn't malicious, but she definitely can't be compared to the naivety of a kid. She is a god who's like several times older than Ody. My personal canon is that she heard him talk in his sleep and then tried to use what she heard to manipulate him off the edge. She wasn't trying to hurt him, but she WAS trying to control him.
@colt19033 күн бұрын
@drakemckisson2428 ... Yes...? What's your point? That's naturally what you're doing when trying to talk someone down from suicide. Also, I said she had the naivety of a kid, not that she's stupid. Kids know how to get what they want. A lot of them are really good at pattern recognition because they're still learning. So since Ody presented the pattern of talking in his sleep about his loved ones then obviously she's gonna make the assumption that those are all happy memories. She's been locked away on an island paradise her whole life dreaming of having people she can love like he does, so obviously she's not gonna think there's any negative feelings that could be tied to them. Like I said, she has the naivety of a child, and most children can't fathom the idea of love hurting or not loving family and what not. So she hears him say these lines and these phrases and they're supposedly attached to those he loves, and here he is at his lowest point contemplating suicide, so of course shed fall back on that pattern. Remind him of his loved ones and hope it's enough to ground him. And I mean... Shit, it works. Can't much argue with results even if they were gotten in accidentally painful ways.

Calypso was banished to that island to be forever alone because her Father Atlas sided against Zeus during the War, so Calypso seeing this guy showing up out of nowhere really is like Olympus throwing her a bone. Also, a lot of people draw attention to her remarks of "Nobody comes or goes." and "Last I cheep goddesses can't die" to say that out of loneliness she attempted to test that preconception herself. I don't know how I personally feel on the idea, but it definitely makes the situation for her much sadder.
@LordCrag19983 күн бұрын
So a little background on Calypso (and apologies bc this is kinda long, and also TW for mentions of SA): She is a minor goddess, and the daughter of the Titan General Atlas, who was cursed to hold up the world following the Titans' defeat in the war with the gods. Calypso sided with her father in the war (she was very young at the time) and as a punishment she was banished to Ogygia (her island) which is enchanted so that no one can find it. But every so often someone will wash ashore-Odysseus is one of, if not the very first one to do so-and she is cursed by Zeus to fall in love with them instantly, but they will never return her feelings. So she's been all alone for hundreds of years, and now is instantly in love with the first guy she's ever really met. And while her tragic backstory does deserve sympathy and makes her actions understandable, she still chose to use her magic to keep him trapped for seven years, and in the Odyssey also uses her magic to force him into bed with her at night. Jorge intentionally left that part kind of ambiguous in Epic, so it's up for interpretation, but in the original work it speaks of them going to bed at night, and I believe the exact wording is something like "one unwilling, one all too willing." So, a very complex character and complicated situation for sure. I'm so glad to see you examine things from both perspectives here. On a lighter note, Barbra Wangui's vocals for Calypso give me life and she deserves all the praise for her performance!

Idk If anyone told you this yet, but Odysseus mom's is sang by Jorge's mom, what makes the whole thing just more sad 😭

The most upbeat, playful and fun (on a rewatch) song in the Thunder Saga? Why Suffering of course The most depressing, emotions inducing, hard-to-listen-to-at-times song in the Wisdom saga? Why Love in Paradise of course What's more, given the themes the titles almost could have just been reversed. 'Penelope' is promising Love in Paradise and this song is all about recapping Ody's Suffering

So despite the horribly upsetting multi layer toxic manipulation from our girl Calypso there is yet another layer of tragedy. Calypso is also cursed to fall in love with whoever washes up on her shore by the very gods that banished her to the island. So while her actions are indefensible she is just as much a prisoner of circumstance as Odysseus. Also to answer your question, no, there is literally no one else on the island besides the two of them.

Jorge’s Calypso feels more… innocent isn’t the right word. But is definitely a more caring character. Homer’s Calypso was awful, even if you consider her curse to fall for whomever.

Zeus impriosned calypso on the island by herself eternally for siding with her father atlas during the titan wars. She's SUPER LONELY. She's been there 100's of years by herself

I’d be down for hers, Mikuchis’ or DuvetBox’s, but I don’t think they were out when she recorded this. I love how Mik animated theirs, and Duvet just keeps popping off.

Fun fact/theory: you don't hear Penelope along. Poletis. The mom and the crew. Because odyseus is forgetting how his wife sound and look like. 16:29
@jacobcollins76613 күн бұрын
i always assumed it was because he was feeling guilt about the people who died specifically, and feeling and thinking of rejoining them he’s at his darkest moment mentally, so maybe he can’t bear to hope for his wife who still lives
@1998faraoКүн бұрын
@jacobcollins7661 that as well but by all voices, Penelope is nowhere to be heard. which makes it also very very sad

Duvetbox and Ximena have a really nice animatic for it, but still, every artist she reacts to deserves the recognition. Plus, as she said herself, she’s never reacted to Britt on the channel :)
