You all should read Gail Lumet Buckley’s book, The Hornes. Gail, Lena’s daughter writes a detailed story of her mother’s life and ancestry for those of you who are interested in that. There’s beautiful photos of Lena’s mother, father, grandparents, great-aunt, and so on. Her family history is extensive and literally is the story of America.

Richard Myles 1 second ago Lena Horne was a MIXED RACE WOMAN. Both of her parents were MULTIGENERATIONAL mixed people. Why do people act like two parents cannot be mixed? Lena Horne was a not a black woman. Name one black tribe in africa that looks remotely like Lena....? Why are people being so ignorant? Leans inherited a substantial amount of white ancestry from both MIXED parents.

My friend just came back from Egypt and she said that the North Africans look light skin or white. Their are tribes in Africa who look like Lena Horne family. The white man went allover spilling his seed.

First of all Lena Horne had no children with Lennie Hayton. Both of her children were with Louis Jones a black man from the black middle class. I heard from a source who knew her son that Louis Jones hated her. Louis also disowned his daughter Gail. I read in a biography that she miscarried Lennie Hayton child. They were under a lot pressure because of their marriage. Her children and grandchildren are black and then something else.I think in the end Lena Horne felt that black people were more like her than her white counterparts. Her grandchildren could take a stand and be more black. Lena Jones Hayes teaches school in the inner city and has a beautiful black daughter. All is not lost.

lovelyn alobwede Lena lived in Jim Crow America. She was black. Social constructs like race evolve which show how ridiculous is is for ppl to treat them as rigid/definite boxes. Today in our more evolved society we can look back and call the one drop rule ridiculous but I think it’s a disservice to history to say she “identified” as black as if she really had any other option the way today’s generation does. My nanny (great grandma) and her siblings looked white to me but her brother was still lynched for dating a white woman when he was 20 so it feels a bit dismissive to say these ppl only identified as black when socially “race” was weighted dramatically differently from today, black today isn’t the same as black then.
