I have no good justification for the video title other than that while watching Tim Burton's masterpiece DUMBO (2019) I was struck by the idea of calling a video "DUMBO SLAPS" and try as I might I couldn't remove it from my mind.

Creativity is isolating - it separates audiences. Big money productions are always about aiming at the lowest, most common taste - they have to be since their expense requires massive returns. When the money spent to produce a work of art goes up, creativity must go down. This isn't to say that creativity can't survive Capitalism, only that creativity in mass-produced culture can't survive it. Look in the smaller spaces.

I saw Dumbo! And I came to the EXACT same conclusion you did about the girl's direction. Tim Burton seems to think the way to portray a "mature, intuitive" child is to make them a toneless, expressionless robot that spews exposition and sometimes says "mysterious" things the adults just don't understand because they aren't as "in tune" with the world. Some of the cuts to her face during tense moments were downright painful. Dumbo is teetering on a platform above the audience, and the camera cuts to her just looking up at him like :|

You're honestly the first person I've seen talk about The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. Weirdly enough, it also had a subplot about the protagonist wanting to be a scientific genius, which filtered into the film's backstory of the people of the Four Realms being toys brought to life by a steampunk laser machine (because apparently just having a magical land be... magical... isn't good enough anymore).

The biggest difference direction-wise is the literal perspective of how the shots are set up. In the original, we see nearly everything from the line of sight of a baby elephant. So we don't see much of the human characters; it's mostly feet. (They did the same thing with Lady and the Tramp.) So the human characters make even less sense when you realize they had to ignore the very basic artistic setup of the original. It's like Tim Burton didn't even understand why the original was shot the way it was.

I'm sure he did, but he also wanted to make a movie to express what he wanted. It's quite clear in most Tim Burton directed movies there are very specific things (Chocolate Factory, daddy issues, alice in wonderland, woman empowerment), I think Jenny hit it on the head that it was Burton getting mad that Disney tried to put his formula in a bottle without him.

@Thread Bomb It’s not that there’s suddenly loads of them, but that they are weirdly redeeming things that don’t deserve their good reputation. The greatest showman glorifies a man who, even by the standards of the time, was cruel, exploitative and racist. And this film glorified the circus as a place of whimsy, even though in the original, the circus was NOT a good place.

Late, but I need to jump in here. I had to write a review of this movie for a web writing class and, good God, Millie's wooden performance is easily the biggest fault to me. I was just sitting there the entire movie praying for her to give something - even if she ended up overacting. The little boy had more emotion than her!

The only time I've been to a circus was on my birthday a couple years ago (I think it was when the Barnum and Bailey & Ringling Bros. Circus was doing its final shows?), and I LOVED. IT. Honestly, I wasn't expecting what we got because it wasn't _just_ a bunch of fun acts with animal trainers and ice skaters. No, it was a bunch of acts tied together with SONGS. IT WAS A FRICKIN MUSICAL AND IT WAS AMAZING. Edit: They also had this really nice booklet about all the performers and how they stopped putting elephants in the show to instead help efforts to revive the elephant population. It was pretty sweet.

@@mitkitty I agree! I liked the Cinderella (2015) remake, but I think that's because I hated the original Cinderella. With Beauty and the Beast, I loved the 2d film so the live action version was especially sucky. They should focus solely on the lesser-known or crappy animated movies.

I also like the part where Dumbo performs his flying act at Micheal Keaton's show for the first time, and then flies out of the tent when he hears his mother calling from the island... and the crowd boos him? "Hey I paid to see an elephant fly, and he did, but he left partway through the act! Boo! Boo! I demand my money back!" There's also a part where the girl has this key on a neckless that is a momento from her mother, and they try to relate it to Dumbo thinking that he needs feathers in order to fly. In the climax where Michael Keaton's park is burning down, the girl tells Dumbo that he never needed anything to fly and had the power in him all along, and then she's like "just like I don't need this key" and throws it into the fire. I was like... what?? It's not equivalent at all, not some placebo holding her back from her true potential or something, it was a gift from her dead mom! I've never been more confused by a character's actions in a movie.

The parallel was: Dumbo doesn't need a feather to fly, exactly like she doesn't need that key to open doors, mostly because the keyholes of the doors she opens won't match that key. Also, she lives in a tent.

coming back to this video years later to inform you of something very important. a new coworker of mine's dad actually owns a travelling circus and she spent a most of her early life travelling and performing, and so i jokingly asked her that whole thing about running away to join the circus, and she deadass said it *is* kind of a scandal when someone leaves to just go get a 9-5 job and that when she was small she just wanted to go to school like a regular kid. so uh, kids run away from the circus to join the office

I had to LOL when you mentioned Disney regarding animals as intelligent and sentient, except horses -- Because it reminded me of the bit from the Goofy cartoon, "How to Ride a Horse", where the horse is beaming with pride as the narrator says, "The horse! -- Noble, graceful, courageous, the most magnificent of all DUMB animals."
