I couldn't help but notice that the top five were all makeup artist brands. I heard a theory once that made sense to me regarding makeup artist cosmetic line formulations: They're accustomed to making models look stunning and perfect just long enough for the photoshoot to end, so the makeup they design lacks longevity and real-life applicability. I think there's some truth to that. The complexion products are often disappointing for those of us who need it to last for a full work day, and they seem to put a lot of emphasis on the products that give an immediate "pop", like a super glittery eyeshadow or highlighter, etc. because of how they show up on camera. Real life/real world makeup is much more affordable and practical, and far more worth the money we spend on it.

For me, any brand that in 2024 hasn’t expanded or improved their shade ranges to be inclusive to people with deeper skin tones and super fair tones and doesn’t have a variety of undertones available is overrated. With so many brands out there trying to out-dupe each other, I’m moving towards investing my money in brands that are working to make their complexion products inclusive to people of color and have better options for neutral, cool, and olive undertones.

My most overrated that I have tried is Kosas. I got their concealer and foundation a few years ago and they were just terrible for me. Not flattering at all. The Tower 28 concealer is so much better. I really think Hourglass is worth it on the other hand. I just got my second of their holiday face palettes because I loved my first one to the point of panning the bronzer. I also just got their Scattered Light eyeshadow in Ray and it is stunning with almost no glitter fallout like most other glitters I have. I agree with you that ABH has a better formula for eyeshadow than a lot of the others. I have one of hers from years ago before I got into a lot of makeup brands and panned most of the shades. Such a good formula and her black friday sale was great so I had to get some more.

I'm only "splurging" on complexion products (I have one skin tint one foundation and one cream palette from Danessa Myricks) because I have the hardest time finding a good shade that matches my skin tone and my undertone (and I bought them when they were 50% off) The rest of my collection is 95% drugstore and I feel good keeping it that way. I got two Haus Labs blushes that I paid full price for, and I'm so mad at myself for getting them. The formula is mid, the longevity is poor and I love my drugstore options way more. I don't see myself buying PMG or Natasha Denona or any mainstream expensive brands now that I have solid products from my favorite indie brands (Cosmic Brushes, Blend Bunny, Sydney Grace, Glamshop, Lethal and Fantasy Cosmetica) for a fraction of the price. Beauty Bay is also a great contender for eyeshadow palettes considering their prices (and their recurrent deals).

As a 57yo consumer with mature , combo/oily, tan skin, most products are underwhelming. I am a skeptic to all the outrageous marketing claims these days. Anything glowy, radiant, dewy, etc is a hard pass for me. Most eyeshadow palettes always have heavy shimmer/glitter that I will never ever wear. Never purchased CT , PT . But I have been quite impressed with the several Fenty products I have purchased. I continue to buy from OG brands like Estee Lauder, Lancome, BBrown, Laura Mercier, Dior, and have started buying Cle duPeau eyeshadow (which is the same price as 2-PTa duos btw). CdP eyeshadow is stellar

Definitely agree that Charlotte Tilbury is over-rated, yet so many influencers rave about her products. Based on their reviews I have picked up a number of items and have been very disappointed. The setting spray is nothing magical - and I hate the smell. The original Wet and Wild setting spray is just as good. Her powder is also underwhelming - if you are going to spend some money for powder I would go with Laura Mercier. The Hollywood Flawless Filter and Cheek to Chic are both "meh". Because of my experience with Charlotte Tilbury, I have actually gone through my notes and unsubscribed from every influencer who recommended the Charlotte Tilbury items I have bought. If they were so wrong - or so motivated by free makeup, etc. - then I can't trust their judgment on anything.

Not so bad on lower lashline or inner corner. PT: mattes can be somewhat difficult to blend, but absolutely stunning eyeshadow with amazing longevity. My favourite (as far as motherships are concerned). Some recent subpar releases, but the motherships are great!

Hi Jen, thanks for the video! I love the top you're wearing here. I don't know that I have an entire brand that I can say I don't like. I do think that a lot of brands, including the ones named in your poll, are ridiculously overpriced. And I also think that there are an awful lot of brands that seem very similar. I think we're probably heading into a period where there will be a shakeout, and a lot of those brands will go out of business.

I feel like when you get to the price point of Patrick Ta, Pat McGrath, Chantecaille or Hourglass, it's pretty difficult to deliver any product that would feel "worth the price". I do, however, agree that these brands are not even close. Unless there is a product that somehow caters to a specific individual need (shade match, suitability for skin type etc.), you can always find something just as good or even better for a fraction of the price.

Hi Jen, I enjoyed watching this video, some very interesting comments on these brands considering they are globally popular. Love Katherine xoxo

For me, it's YSL! The foundation is so thick and heavy, the concealer creases easily, the lipsticks are nice but there are tons of affordable options out there that give even better result. Don't even get me started with their eyeshadow!! I recently tried their bronzer that retails for $65! It was nothing special! My $12 Loreal Bronzer is far better than that one. I lover their perfumes though but for makeup, NO THANK YOU!

Everyone is out here whining about the price of the Patrick Ta eyeshadow duos, when Too Faved is charging $30 for ONE single eyeshadow that leaves fallout all over your face. Let’s not forget Hourglass, Urban Decay, etc. It’s okay for them to charge that much for ONE shadow, but he is just being greedy. If you watch Marlena Stell, she explains why some brands have higher price points. If you don’t like the price, go buy something else. I like mid range to higher end makeup for myself, because it actually stays on my face all day. I didn’t wear anything but drugstore until 2020 when I started watching KZbin, so I have worn both sides of the makeup spectrum. Same with skincare, drugstore skincare is ridiculous in price for some products, but it’s okay for them to do it.🙄

I actually think the price of the Too Faced shadows is ludicrous also. I have one and you're right it has crazy amounts of fallout and isn't worth the price. I think both things can be true...they're both overpriced IMO.

Great video as usual! I agree with all of them except…Natasha Denona. I love her palettes-the color stories, the formulas, the packaging, everything. I also like a bunch of her other products: concealer, lip pencils.

Personally I think Pat McGrath can charge whatever she wants 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ She’s an actually iconic makeup artist who worked for decades in the industry and is responsible for many iconic runway looks and editorials. I have much more of an issue when influencer or celebrity brands charge an arm and a leg when they just slap their name on something a lot of the time. I agree about getting repetitive but at the same time being known for rosy shades isn’t any different than Charlotte being known for glowy face products or Natasha being known for eyeshadow palettes. (I also love today’s advent pick. Could it also be a dupe for a shade in the Patrick Ta duos??😅)

Patrick Ta is clean, so the products aren’t gonna last as long as other brands. I have the blush and I believe it’s good for 12 months per the label.

I would love to see the flip side of this - polling followers to see what everyone feels is underrated! Maybe that's in the works already but if it isn't, just a suggestion! 😉 Totally agree with most of these, though. Especially Natasha Denona - I bought one palette and was so hyped to finally see what all the fuss was about, only to be underwhelmed. For that price point, I'll just stick with my Huda palettes (my favorite formula ever!).

I agree with the commenter who disliked the Chantacaille foundation. I kept hearing people saying how great it was and I bought it. It was absolutely horrible! That was over $60 right in the trash. It was goopy and heavy.

Another great video Jen! Makeup lover for years (never tried any of these brands but have been curious about them I would never pay that much for these products I have seen many reviews on these products good and BAD . I do love Estée Lauder foundations, and Too faced coco bold lipsticks and Too faced Blushes other then that my go to are drug store …. And color pop

Even at the brand's peak, perfumed eyeshadows are a big no no to me no matter how good it performs.

Patrick ta isn’t my favorite either. His first two palettes are pretty but I found the deep shades fade on me, especially if I don’t use one of the creams. And his blushes, I have one. It’s ok. It’s also too pigmented. But the packaging just seems bulky. It just doesn’t appeal to me.

TirTir is 1000000% the most overhyped products of 2024. I don’t personally have issue with Patrick Ta. I’ve only tried the setting spray from CT (purchased 4xs and think it’s lovely) pillow talk lipstick and & lipliner mini in a gift set, liked them all very much. Would totally try the CT pressed powder but can’t justify the price when Physicians Formula works great & I use pressed for touch ups so go through it. I don’t think CT is that interesting but also have liked what I’ve tried. Haven’t tried Pat McGrath. Just so pricey and I have so much eye shadow. Had a mini of ND and it was very nice but didn’t inspire me to buy a full size and those prices. Haven’t tried MUBM 😂 I am absolutely going to buy his new loose powder though, but not til I’m out of my current powders though so it definitely won’t be soon. But it’s allegedly the best on the market right now. My 2 cents.

I am in India and honestly all these brands are overpriced and really pisses me off when influencers hype them. I was deciding between Huda beauty and Natasha Denona for a palette and I got my answers, thanks!

Maybe the real issue here is that in today's troubled world no makeup is worth 100 bucks - that's scandalous.

Ta:I got 2 of the duos and 3 formulas. You aren’t missing anything Pat McGrath: she has lost the plot. This past year it has nose dived. I only bought 4 items all year. Historically I bought every eyeshadow. I easily have 45/50 palettes. Very disappointed
@KatDenWV9 күн бұрын
I really like Estee Lauder. I really like the concealer, it’s my holy grail. Patrick Ta is a definite NO for me. I’ve even gotten more cautious with drugstore brands. If the claim doesn’t match the performance I take it back and don’t waste my money.
