Here's a look at my bead roller. It has had many modifications made to it over the years and is now as useful as I believe it can be. I hope that this tour around my bead roller will give you some inspiration and some useful ideas on how to modify your own.

Hi Jere, I built mine from a Woodward Fab's. I used square tube on the side and forgot to slot the top hole. I was still able to slot it and got it to move 3/4" which works ok. I would like to make one with square tube and do away with the front bearing blocks which seem to be in the way and the space would be more open like an English wheel. I had mine done before I saw yours. I am definitely going to use your back stop and mounting system design since it accomplishes two things with one mount brilliant! I may use your idea of the quick clamp but for now my hand crank works fine. I used a Bodine motor from Ebay and their control for speed and direction. It is nice and quiet. I had my drive rods machined to fit Lazze;s rollers. I look forward to your videos cause I know Iearn something new. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and ideas with us.

Hello Spider: No I don't have any info on building an E Wheel. You can go to a web sight called All Metal Shaping and find many home built wheels. You can also find where to get the wheels and adjusters. I am editing a video on how to polish the wheels right now and it should be up this weekend. Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe. Jere, you made a slot on the top (rear) so you can slide the shaft back /forth , why did you not make the same slot on the bottom, don't the two shafts need the same flexibility? I noticed you drilled a second hole instead of a slot, is that 2nd hole centered to the end of the slot on the top? thanks , I am modifying my bead roller following your video.
@jerekirkpatrick2092
@jerekirkpatrick2092 4 жыл бұрын
Hello DD: Only the top shaft needs movement. This is used for aligning the dies. The bottom shaft is moved forward in order to keep the gears lined up in the middle of the top shaft movement. I have a set of plans that will walk you through all the steps and a parts list and where to get them. The plans are quite thorough and a step by step DVD. You can find a link to my web sight in the description. Thanks for watching. Jere

@@jerekirkpatrick2092 Thanks very much for your quick reply, your explanation made perfect sense, I just finished drilling/tapping all the holes and assembled most of it., the plans for this project would have most likely helped but my bead roller is a combination of 2 or 3 different designs mixed with some of my own (I'm left handed). I copied a bit here and a bit there to suit my needs. before I go I must add you are a great source of inspiration for me . keep it up .

a few years ago I bought my basic plate beadroller and plans from Jere at a metal meet in Santa Cruz. I did all the mods per the plans and couldn't be more pleased with the results. I also broached my rolls and welded keys in the keyways of the rollers, another Jere pro tip. No more wobbly rollers from the set screws pushing the rolls of center. I ended up buying a Harbor Freight pipe taping motor to power my beadroller. Its removable so it can also be used to power my Harbor Freight tube rolling bender, or tap big pipe assuming that the taps actually cut and produce leak free threads. The worm drive drive reduction seems to keep the motor in a happy place when I'm moving slowly around turns. At one point I will add a light, and a laser, just like a custom car its never really done.

Hi Jere. I'm glad your "Schnoz" is doing better. This video is a great addition to the others you have posted regarding the modifications you made and the plans you sell. As I am "financially challenged", I used the junk I had laying around for my bead roller, which included the power steering motor from a Chev car. That unit is similar to a windshield wiper motor with built-in worm gear reduction, only larger/stronger. It, along with 2 sets of sprockets and a reversible speed controller lets the motor spin up nicely yet still roll the dies nice and slowly. Now.. if the arthritis in my hands would cooperate and let me use the darned thing! Thanks for posting. Joe

@@jerekirkpatrick2092 Thought, trial and error and getting as many ideas from others that I can. 3 more videos on the bead roller? I'm sure I will be interested. But I don't think I have been uninterested in any of your videos. They are always informative with just the right amount of your dry wit. Or maybe you are always meaning to be serious. If so.. oops. ;) I believe you had mentioned a planishing hammer video or two. That should be interesting as well. I built mine out of scrap, just like my English wheel. And when I say scrap, I don't mean nice "off-cuts" of good metal. I mean scrap. So I'll watch any video you have to post. Stay well...

Link to your contact is not working Jere. Would like to order your plans. Watched the vidoes and could probably duplicate your mods, but want to support your site. Appreciate how you described why you used the materials you used. Being an "Engineer Type" I love to know the "Why's". Also, for some of you guys thinking of motorizing yours, consider this, I am about to use the motor drive and reduction gear box drive from a Mobility Scooter I bought on Craigslist for $75. It's 24 volt, variable speed, lots of torque, reversable and it came with a charger. So should be very portable.
