Impressive on all counts. Beautiful organ, super interpretation and accurate performance, the socks are hard to ignore :) Videography and audio engineers did a great job, and finally, Trinity College Chapel is gorgeous. I'll be looking for more from Jeremy Cole.

Superb performance and beautifully chosen stops. This is truly authentic Baroque. The stop choices let each section of the piece tell a story. And oftentimes it is really easy to hear all 6 voices quite distinctly! I can't get over how authentic-feeling this performance was.

I had the thrill of playing this organ back in 1982. I also remember seeing it in the late 60's when it was a large Hill instrument with extra bits of case stuck on the sides and wood 32' pedal pipes sitting near the entrance. A number of the original Father Smith ranks were re-used in this instrument.

I really love the way Jeremy Cole plays this piece compared to other interpretations. To my [amateur] ear, many musicians seem to emphasize mechanical precision - like nuance isn't necessary or relevant to playing Bach. This version weaves the voices in and out perfectly with subtlest hesitations to create just the right amount of separation and emphasis between phrases while they interact with each other to make the whole. To me this sensitivity\sensibility translates into much stronger emotional reactions and, in my case, appreciation. Others seem to rely on harsh staccato to more-or-less punch things into foreground over the course of the piece. The reason for bothering to say this - even though I'm just an amateur - is because I set out to purchase a decent organ rendition of Ricercare 6 and had to compare many recordings. This one nails exactly what I was hoping to find, but it ain't on iTunes. Should be and the notes should link to it. ;-)

@@earl211 Well. Hehe. One of them is an opinionated fusser and the other is a music-starved whiner, but both are attached to a bona fide hack. If you need proof (highly discouraged) you can hear\suffer a few recreational, stomach-churners on my whaddyacallit. Channel. But don't say you weren't warned and don't feel sorry - I still enjoy the act of trying!

love the delicate registration in the middle. I wonder if playing from the Gillou edition (very french romantic influenced, the fingering and pedalling reflect the Dupre bach editions) have encouraged him to play it in a similar vein. However for some strange reason Gillou does not provide fingering to this piece in his edition only pedalling (heels and toes) in contrast to most of the others. Be nice to compare with a Tom Koopman version of it in terms of technique/sound world.

Frederick the Great challeneged Bach to improvise with this theme when Bach was invited to his residence as his son Carl Phillpe was employed there as court musican. This is Bach's improvisation to that theme but then Frederick challenged him further to impovise a 6 figue canon from the same theme but Bach declined, telling him that it will take him more time to work out the score and he will send it to the king later on.

An excellent performance on an equally fine instrument! I only wish that the organ were a little bit larger, with 32-foot ranks in the pedal, and that Metzler had installed a modern combination action. Even the late Dirk Flentrop of Holland admitted that adding such playing aids by no means interfered with the quality of instruments such as this!

I can't fault the performance - it's very skilled. But the organ really isn't my cup of tea. Everyone seems to think it's amazing, but I find the Trinity organ too 'direct' if that makes sense. Every note seems to have an 'impact' and then stops immediately the key is lifted. Does that make sense? What accounts for this? The organs at Kings and St John's are altogether softer and smoother, but just as powerful and voluminous, if not more so.
@Knappa2210 жыл бұрын
***** I know how an organ operates, and how a player must master a legato technique to keep a flowing sound. However the Trinity organ (and many continental organs) seem to have a direct and dead-end sound. I'm not explaining this very well probably! Compare this organ with English organs like Harrison or Hill, Norman and Beard etc. The latter are altogether smoother and resonate better.
@MrDorian619 жыл бұрын
Knappa22 This instrument is quite different from Harrison or Hill Norman and Beard because it has mechanical action to play the pipes. The result is greater clarity in the texture of the music, which is of benefit to the listener. The acoustics are drier than Kings College and St. Johns which affects the tone of the instrument. Then there are the pipes- which are un nicked- unlike those in the great romantic instruments found in many of the cathedrals. Un nicked pipes have a cleaner and more direct attack. Basically what you are saying that you prefer the sound of the electropneumatic ( pipes are sounded by a mechanism triggered by electromagnetic action) orchestral style organ which is just fine!
@Knappa229 жыл бұрын
MrDorian61 Thanks for a very informative reply :). I don't think it's down to the tracker action of the organ. I've heard plenty of trackers and they can sound every bit as smooth and romantic as their electropneumatic counterparts. Very interesting what you say about nicked and unnicked pipes, which may well be causing the different qualities/textures we're talking about. Also I agree that the acoustics are considerably more turgid in the Trinity chapel.As you say, it is a matter of differing taste. You describe the sound as 'cleaner' 'direct' 'clarity' whereas I'd describe it as 'harsh' ''exposed' and 'jolting'!
@organbuilder2727 жыл бұрын
+Knappa22 - Likely because this is one of failed attempts to imitate the N. German baroque style. It is wonderful for N. German baroque music if you have a lot of reverb to cover the screech, but in this recording there is little building response. The wind is unsteady as well. Quite annoying. They should have don'e a reproduction of a Willis or Schultz or one of the better English organ builders of the time with the larger stop list

Wonderful interpretation! Especially in this stupid time, when so-called organists playing Bach on one manual and without any stop-changes.
@dmitrylotow968810 жыл бұрын
***** I'd be very doubtful about term "historically accurate". We have no documents or recordings, that can proove this conception. This manner of playing is only one of the possible ways and can not be proclamed as the absolute truth. Also Bach himself made registration of his works in a very unusual way - that was mentioned by his contemporaries. So, we can't have so great assurance that "one-manual way" is most suitable for Bach. Moreover our concert organs are very different from Bach-organs, And it is very strange to try to play autentical on the organ with (for example) electrical blower.
@paulcaswell28134 жыл бұрын
@@dmitrylotow9688 Never mind an electric blower: electro-pneumatic actions murder Bach and Buxtehude.

Speaking "Bach", one needs to intuit and/or understand where the commas and periods are. Otherwise the phrases and sentences get all run together. The early release of a note or change in registration will given meaning. Listen to yourself... and the room. It will come you. Playing all the right notes is only speaking half the meaning. Otherwise, good job kid. Keep on. CVD

You need to breathe... the phrase, otherwise it all sound run together. Breathe... the phrases. Breathe. That means let up a little at end of each harmonic phrases. Just a little... unless you're playing it really fast. Try working the the pieces from the Liturgical Year... both in the melodies and the pedal. A little brake to create the phrase... so it's not just lagato or run through. You'll get it when you don't have to play them too fast. Songs.
